To be fair, he criticised him for all the shenanigans that have gone on, not for turning down 100k a week or wanting to leave Liverpool.

I dunno, it's pretty hypocritical. Gerrard himself went public over his desire to leave and caused all manner of shenanigans.

What's the betting that Gerrard was offered a similar wage before he decided to go to America for a big payday? He'd still be at Liverpool if it wasn't for wage demands, of that I'm sure. We go again (as long as you pay me more).

he took a pay cut

Basically, he knew his time was up in terms of being a regular starter in the Liverpool team and didn't want to sit on the bench and become a bit part player. He was our top goalscorer last season (thanks to a few pens) but his overall contribution on the field declined greatly in the last few years. He'll always be a hero and a legend, but I'm sure most Liverpool fans would agree that his starting place would not have been guaranteed this season, like it wasn't last. Though I still feel we should have kept him for his off the field presence, particularly with such a young squad. The money and the lifestyle is America is an added bonus to someone who in all honestly, probably thought, as we all did, would start and end his career at the same football club.

If his reasoning really was to play more or get a new challenge then that's fair enough, but with sponsorship etc I'd be very surprised if his take-home pay is less.

i don't know about that, he was on 150k a week at Liverpool, at LA Galaxy its apparantly only 70k a week, I think he could of got a better offer from a team in Europe but probably just wanted to move to Los Angeles and still be playing every week

Gerrard's probably really skint having played 17 years in a Premier League team with Cup bonuses, goal bonuses and massive sponsorship deals. Apparently £15m combined in 2014. Going down to £70k a week. Poor fucker.

I'm a big fan of Jordan, Those giant boobs and the quality literature she writes. Wasn't she married to that bloke from Iceland who sang Mysterious Girl? -Messi quipped. Oh Jordan Henderson? Never heard of him.

New Zealand have been chucked out of the Olympics qualifiers in the Pacific Games. They beat Vanuatu 2-0 in the semi-final, who subsequently complained that Deklan Wynne was ineligible. He was born in South Africa, moved to New Zealand as a kid, and has since represented New Zealand at youth and full international level.

The issue? FIFA's rules, stating that he has to be resident for five years after the age of 18, as none of his parents or grandparents are New Zealanders. Sure, he holds a passport and is a New Zealand citizen, but apparently that doesn't matter if you're a 20 year old living there for over a decade. Only if you're 23 and have been there for half that.

Wut?

Yeah, that's a strange rule. It sounds like the player has represented his country plenty of times already, and only got called out on this technicality after Vanuatu kicked up a fuss. If he's lived there for what sounds like most of his life, then surely if he says he's a Kiwi then he's a Kiwi.

No, because the four Home Nations have an agreement with FIFA whereby anyone educated in the country for five years becomes elligible. This only applies to the Home Nations because FIFA.

Yeah it was a set of rules that the four FAs of the UK specifically asked to be ratified, because FIFA weren't going to do anything about it - it's due to the fact that the UK covers all four constituent countries and additional rules are needed or you'd get silly situations where England nicks all the best youngsters even if they haven't stepped foot in England, ever (which they could have done under the standard applies-to-everyone-else rules).

Recently relegated Cheltenham Town have a sponsorship deal so their Whaddon Road Stadium will now be known as the World of Smile Stadium.

Which rivals KitKat Crescent for worst ground name especially with some of the performances Cheltenham put in last season.

Some European games were played yesterday, Champions League qualifiers all. Of minor interest is that Crusaders got thwonked (it's a word) 4-1 away at Skënderbeu, The New Saints were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Videoton in Shropshire, and Lincoln Red Imps suffered a 1-0 reverse to Midtjylland in what is actually quite an impressive result for a team of part timers against the Danish champions.

But the biggest result of the day was probably Hibernians beating Maccabi Tel-Aviv 2-1, and coming from behind to do it too. Not those Scottish blokes, of course, the Maltese guys.

Oh, and Lech Poznan won 2-0 in Sarajevo, but there's still plenty of time for UEFA to award the tie against them for some minor technical infringement.
