Arkham Knight PC tech-talk: settings, performance etc

What is the legal position though?

The retailers have sold a product that, as evidenced by WB recalling/suspending it from sale, is surely now defined as being not fit for purpose. That must be as rock solid a case for the consumer to request a refund as is possible?

I feel an email to watchdog is on the cards...

Nah that guy Moz says it's fine so it's likely a fault with your configuration and they can't help that.

PC Gamer weighs in: "Broken Bat: finding the good and bad in the Arkham Knight debacle"

It's unlikely that the blame for this situation lies with Rocksteady or even the third party studio responsible for the port. The buck stops with the publisher, here, and the decision to budget only so much time, money and effort for the PC version. Contrary to popular belief, this is one of the most difficult platforms to get right: the current-gen consoles are basically PCs with fixed specs, while developing for the PC proper means accounting for hundreds of thousands if not millions of configurations. It's hard. There's a reason it took GTA V eighteen months to get here. Whoever opted to release Arkham Knight in this condition didn't respect that challenge, and everybody involved has paid for it.

Steam's well-timed refund policy is the hero we didn't know we needed, here, as is GMG's magnanimous offer to allow their users to do the same. Players finally have an option that has always seemed like a good idea in theory but that has never worked in practice: to vote with their wallets. Boycotts and petitions don't work, traditionally, because games still sell and once they've sold the player is at the publisher's mercy. Now, with no-questions-asked refunds a possibility, it's simply too punishing to risk the consumer's ire. That's very good news, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the main factor in prompting Warner's decision.

Arkham Knight may well be the first and only game where the PC port was both (a) rushed out to meet the console release date and (b) delayed by months until it worked. In the future, expect to see a lot more of option (b). Warner's predicament should send ripples through the publisher community, but don't expect it to fix all of the problems that PC gamers tend to face. We might be seeing the death of the rushed-out port, but the late port looks to be a part of our hobby for a long time to come.

I've had issues based around volumetric smoke, that's the worst offender for killing FPS for me. Textures frequently fail to load in time so things look like early PS2-era assets. I've had once instance of a loss in lip-sync. Apart from that I'm having pretty stable 30fps with occasional jumps to 40 or 60fps.

I think this will herald the era of the delayed PC release.

Ubisoft learnt there lesson with Unity. They have said now they have a dedicated PC team and the PC version will come out after the consoles versions. GTA V came out 18 months after the console release.

I'd say any studio that have a history of PC development or use PC as lead will be fine. DICE for example, or CD Projekt Red.

Any studio which demonstrates games running on the PS4 though, which seems to be a lot now, I'll be skeptical about until reviews come out.

Many other studios will stagger release. I'm ok with this if it works.

I'm perfectly happy with delayed releases if it means we get decent versions. Almost all PC owners I know have a pile of shame in double figures, so it's not like we're twiddling our thumbs waiting for the next big release.

A few years ago, the complaint from PC owners and the conspiracy theory put forward was that the PC version was only delayed to not cannibalise console sales due to ease of piracy on PC/lower prices on PC when it might have been more to do with the problem with porting to PC in time for a simultaneous release in the first place.

Bingo. If anything PC owners will buy but not play. I've learnt my lesson and refuse to buy any game day 1.

Fallout 4 is one of my most ancipated but you just know it's going to broken for a while until patches rollout, but probably not broken to the extent of this AK.

First PC patch is out already. It's a start...

  • Fixed a crash that was happening for some users when exiting the game
  • Fixed a bug which disabled rain effects and ambient occlusion. We are actively looking into fixing other bugs to improve this further
  • Corrected an issue that was causing Steam to re-download the game when verifying the integrity of the game cache through the Steam client
  • Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when turning off Motion Blur in BmSystemSettings.ini. A future patch will enable this in the graphics settings menu

Yeah it's definitely sounding a lot more promising now rocksteady themselves are working on it. Which is obviously what they should have done in the first place.

Guess we just have to wait it out- the post on Steam makes it sound like it might be a little while before the major problems are fixed. Just have to wait now.

Plan for future updates:

Rocksteady is leading our team of developers and partners as we work on the PC performance issues that players have been encountering. The work is significant and while we are making good progress on improving performance, it will take some time to ensure that we get the right fixes in place.

Below is the list of the key areas where we are dedicating our resources to improve the experience for our loyal fans:

- Support for frame rates above 30FPS in the graphics settings menu

- Fix for low resolution texture bug

- Improve overall performance and framerate hitches

- Add more options to the graphics settings menu

- Improvements to hard drive streaming and hitches

- Address full screen rendering bug on gaming laptop

- Improvements to system memory and VRAM usage

- NVIDIA SLI bug fixes

- Enabling AMD Crossfire

- NVIDIA and AMD updated drivers

Been away for a week. Mad to hear of these issues, especially considering the previous games were awesome on PC from day one, pretty much.

Is this the first time they e outsourced the PC port?
