Arkham Knight PC tech-talk: settings, performance etc

Moz, have you got it running from an ssd? I played about 20 minutes last night on a 970 and though it was 30fps, it was smooth. Even in the batmobile.

Also sabreman has the exact setup that I do.

Yeah SSD, I have zero problems. It's the same as the others, 60fps/1440p. The missing textures only happened twice (I screenshotted both times!)

970 sli (not sure if it actually has a SLI profile, ha), 4770k, 8GB ram, Windows 8.1.

Posted these pics in the main thread, but thought I'd bung 'em here. In screenshots they do look remarkably similar, but I think at the end of the day you're not going to get much of a difference in the general style of the thing.

Knight is doing a hell of a lot more visual gubbins than City ever did though...those vanishing textures don't help :P

Prettty much exactly what my game is like at 6 minutes.

Had exactly this. Not sure if it's just coincidence but did the ol' "verify integrity of game cache" on Steam and it seemed to re-downloaded the whole game, and... well, it's working lovely now. Worth a try, possibly.

It just crashes for me eventually, I can't really play the game for any significant amount of time before it crashes. Not happening with any other game at the minute. I'm not absolutely 'horrified' or 'outraged' but I hope it gets sorted soon. Enjoyed what I played.

Same card, didn't have that issue, although I think I was still capped to 30 FPS when I got to there so maybe that has something to do with it.

Wow, some of these issues are really bad. Got mine running at 3840x2160 with none of the nVidia Gameworks stuff & all the other stuff at normal settings & getting a solid 30FPS all the time (looks good but the motion blur is annoying). I dropped it down to 1920x1080 & got a fluctuating 63-71FPS. The Gameworks stuff seem to be overly GPU intensive much like the Physx & DX11 stuff in Arkham City. Took them a year to get it running efficiently if I remember rightly.

My setup is not special but it does the trick: i7-950 2.4ghz, MSI TF GTX970 4GB, 24GB 1666Mhz DDR3 & running from a normal 1TB HDD.

Edit* My Steam screenshot library for perusal of shots I've taken in-game (along with other games too obviously). http://steamcommunity.com/id/tetchywayo/screenshots/

There's a patch?

I played it. It ran like shit and I quit out. Decided I'd try again with the settings reduced and this popped up when I went to start the game...

The patch notes also directed me to new AMD drivers

Been running fine ever since at full settings (no nVidia stuff)

I took the screenshot as in between, I'd moaned on FB about how shit the framerate was before trying again

Comparison video:

The PC version is remarkable. Compared to its console counterparts, it's flat & lifeless. Also, fucking LOL at the cape doing its thing when Batman is perched on high. As for the rain effect, it's more 'wet look' than the fully fledged console version.

Just out of interest, have the people with the game problems got the right pagefile.sys virtual memory sizes to complement their physical RAM? Reason I ask is that when you look at task manager BAK uses over 6GB of available memory, could it be literally a matter of their not being enough memory cached & committed to run this along with other processes & programmes on their PC?

PC is missing some texture effects on the batsuit/cape in said video above. Most noticeable in the gliding clip.

Maybe 'the cape' gradually gets wet on PC and is just 100% wet on consoles? Or maybe they just fucked up.

I get the feeling the game should also be using gameworks HBAO but it's disabled/broken.

What video are you watching? They look exactly the same. That is to say all hopelessly compressed to the point the video loses any meaning whatsoever. And the PC version looks a bit higher FPS infrequently.

Hardly. There's no AO whatsoever in the PC version which makes a massive difference, especially given the art style, the rain effect is dialled back considerably & I don't even know what is going on with the cape when it's blowing in the wind. I'm sure it will be fixed, but it's difficult to comprehend anyone at Warner Bros. thinking that no-one would notice & that it wouldn't receive an almighty panning. Delaying by a couple of weeks would have been far more sensible.

Okay, remember how my download of Arkham Knight reset itself after shutting down the PC? Well, I've had the download running all evening, looked at it a little over an hour ago and there was half an hour left on the clock... and now I come back and it's restarted from scratch again. I wish I knew what the fuck it/Steam were playing at.

Even though I'm not gonna go at it properly till I'm done with The Witcher 3, I fired this up out of curiosity. None of the horrendous juddering and I didn't notice any obviously missing textures either.

They're probably uploading new builds to the server and the game doesn't support any form of incremental patching. Wasn't Mortal Kombat like that on launch too?

I read that the Batman DVDs (5!) are nigh on useless since it still needs to install 30Gb from the web. This would support the incremental patch fail theory if it's true.

Funnily enough talking about Mortal Kombat X, the original porting developers High Voltage Games (who are fucking terrible) got the boot by WB/NRS and now QLOC have taken over, who have a much better track record. (eg the recent DMC port ). This isn't the first time they've gotten the boot either, they did such a bad job with the Zone Of The Enders HD Collection that a different developer had to patch that up too.

Get yourself to specsavers.

The water textures seem to be missing from the PC build for Batman and the bat mobile.

I stuck it on for an hour or two last night without fiddling with the ini files at all and it seemed to run pretty well for me, bar a bit of stuttering during the initial cutscene. Running an i7 2600k with 16GB and a 980. Hopefully they can get it patched up pretty quickly, I imagine the influx of refunds is a pretty good motivator.
