In other news, I got my mclassic delivered yesterday. Results vary depending on the game but some, Breath of the Wild, get quite the boost.

It won’t change your life but if you have a 4K TV and like the sound of a 4K switch (not really but sort of), then it’s probably worth it.

What, honestly?

This is a thing?

Worth it, you reckon?

Me when buying the Switch recently: "I won't be any more games until I'm done with Breath of the Wild"

Me on first eshope sale since owning a Switch: "Games!!"

I now have:

Sayonara Wild Hearts

Untitled Goose Game

Donut County

Slay the Spire

Hollow Knight

Online subscription (SNES!)

And I don't have time to even play Zelda!

Are there any stick protectors available for the Pro controller? Want to prevent further wear on my Pro’s main thumbstick (it’s gone tacky from two years of regular use).

Never heard of that, looks interesting.

Have you used it with a Wii or Gamecube yet, or through an HDMI splitter?

Nope, I don’t have any of those.

I believe it will work through a HDMI splitter just fine, though.

The mClassic thing is pure snake oil, it's just an average, overpriced upscaler. The claims of being a "Graphics card" are just lies because it doesn't see the image until after the Switch is finished with it, it's getting pictures not the data used to build them.

If it looks good to you great but it's being sold on a lie.

The claim of “it’s like adding a graphics card” is marketing but yes, I think anyone buying it would realise that it’s cleaning up an image rather than processing raw data because it hangs out the back of the switch. That’s quite obvious.

Beyond that, it does actually work. Playing on a 65” OLED there’s a clear difference on a lot of titles. On Links Awakening it cleans up jagged edges very well.

To measure expectations, though, I’d say that if you were into this sort of thing you’d be pretty happy with it but your girlfriend would look up from her Grazia and say “that’s nice dear” and not care.

Based on this info, are there cheaper alternatives that do the same thing?

In theory the upscaler on your TV is cheaper because it’s free but I can confirm - whilst sounding like a bit of a dick - that my top of the range AG9 doesn’t do it as well.

That said, I think calling it a mere upscaler is doing it a bit of a disservice.

I’m supposed digital foundry haven’t done a feature yet, they did one for the company’s previous product, the mcable.

It works great. Like I said, it's not life changing but there's a noticeable difference and I'm quite happy. The reviews seem to go with this consensus. I guess it's pointless if you don't have a 4K telly or have one of the smaller models and sit miles away from the screen.

Yeah, I remember the reviews of the original cable saying it was a  valid option if you don’t have a good scaler in your TV or receiver, especially at the price. MLiG might have looked at it too? Basically like the Framemeister or OSSC it does a useful function for an extremely specific niche, as much as their marketing would love to suggest otherwise.

He’s not one of the bigger names but still, it’s nice to know that - whilst spitting bars about capping fools and fucking ‘ho’s - at least one of them was also dreaming about higher pixel counts.

I'm just glad that West Coast gangsters care about image quality too. Makes them more human.

From what I can read it’s a step up from the cable in what it does but yes, the marketing is a tad OTT.

Of course it does. But they've ported it to pretty much everything else going, released multiple GOTY editions and collections and for some bizarre reason, remade AA and AC in UE4 so it could apparently look worse and run like garbage on PS4 and Xbox One. A Switch port is hardly farfetched.

Anyway, I'll take it that nothing's been announced.

It seems like a very obvious choice to me. I’m sure porting it would be a lot cheaper than developing a new game and a lot of the marketing as already been paid for, in a manner because they’re critically acclaimed games and people already know they’re good. Word of mouth would count for a lot.
