It might but I get the packet loss warning on Overwatch all the time, which is annoying.

Ive tried it near and far. I wonder if being to close to my wireless sub (which gets affected by everything else) may be an issue, thinking about it. Though it is in standby mode as I do which shouldn’t really use much bandwidth.

I’d love a Digital Foundry vid on this one, it would be interesting to see what compromises were made to get it running yet still looking so good.

I know it’s an older game now (5 years old?) but it still looks fantastic in its own right.

It’s probably based on the 360/ps3 versions but even those looked great at the time. How the managed such detailed graphics on the 360 to match the much more power consoles I’ll never know.

My Switch’s wireless connection is useless. I have a google WiFi mesh in my flat that gives full bars on everything. On my switch I get 1-2 bars, tops. Even if I’m next to the second wireless base station.

Is there anything I can do?

Are you using 5Ghz wifi? I find the standard 2.4GHz option to be almost useless on the Switch no matter how close I am to the router but the 5GHz connection is usually OK.

Hi. I’ve just picked up a Switch and It’s my first Nintendo console since the 64.

Are there any must have’s ? BOTW and Mario came with it. I may trade Mario as it’s not generally my thing but I will give it a go first. possibly for Luigi 3.

From the hardware point, memory card, pro controller and a screen protector. Anything else recommend ?

Many thanks for any replies.

This reminds me of my supervisor who, a couple weeks ago, enthusiastically marched up to me and announced, 'So, are you getting The Luigi's Haunted Mansion Part 3 this week?'

Bless... :D

Just focus on BOTW for now - it's the best game on this or any other console. If you buy a load of other stuff you'll just get distracted. And Odyssey is everyone's "thing", what's wrong with you? ;)

You've got close to 200 hours of S-tier entertainment right there. You won't need anything else until the new year. (Although, if you're looking for a good Christmas co-op game, Overcooked is currently on sale.)

As for accessories, the Pro controller is a nice luxury, but it's not cheap. See how you get on with split Joycons first; lots of people find them more than comfortable enough.

You'll also probably want to invest in a grip for hand-held mode, depending on how often you plan to have it undocked. I, and lots of others, have imported the Satisfye grip, which is lovely but will set you back about £30 for a chunk of plastic. There are more UK-local options to choose from now, however. Get something with controller 'handles', so to speak, or you'll quickly get pins and needles.

A carry case is essential if you want to take it places.

What sort of games do you like?  There are loads of great Switch games.  Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Mario Maker 2, Arms and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze are great, and if you haven't had a Wii, Wii U or GC, you won't have played them.

Katamari Damashi, Skyrim, Capcom Belt Collection, The Witcher 3, Spyro, Raiden 5, River City Girls and Streetfighter Collection are also not to be missed, depending on whether you like those sorts of games.  But you may have already played them on other consoles, although for me it's worth double dipping for the portability.

Fair comment. They will take me well into the new year, i've not gamed much this year due to stuff happening on a personal level so i'm very much looking forward to getting stuck into BOTW and hopefully finding love for Mario.

The Joycons seem fine so far and i've only played a couple of hours so i will see how they go.

I'll take a look at that grip but not sure how much i'll have it hand-held mode over the next few months.

Cheers for the info.

I got a carry case as part of the 2nd hand bundle.

Games wise over the last few years, some that i've enjoyed RDR2, Last of Us, GTA5, yoku's Island Express, Rocket League. The PS4 will be used for some exclusives as i'm hoping to use the Switch as the main console.

Splatoon and Arms look good fun. I'm guessing demo's are available for some of the titles you mention?

Skyrim and Witcher3 have been played on the PS4

Depending on what sort of games you’d like you should find some good deals in the current eshop sale.

@Robsk1

Fair warning, ARMS is brilliant but can take a while for it to click and online is basically dead. This is a real shame but it hopefully sold well enough for a sequel at some point.

Splatoon 2 is still busy and also brilliant and there will be a fervent player base until Splatoon 3 inevitably appears. Smash Bros Ultimate is pretty staggering in terms of content and very busy online. Mario Maker 2 is great but maybe less so if you don't like those games!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Fire Emblem Three Houses are both big story driven RPG kind of games. I really liked the latter but still struggling with XC2 even after buying it day one two years ago. I'm about halfway through or something. It's great at its best but with serious flaws to my tastes. Some people adore it, though.

All the Wii U ports are fantastic. Tropical Freeze is probably the highlight but Bayonetta 2 is also immense if you've never played it. MK8D is the best MK game in many respects. Not my favourite and the rubber banding is daft but as a package, it's extremely entertaining.

Astral Chain is excellent but I need to play it more. Uhh, Luigi 3 is very good, Pokemon is pretty decent. Link's Awakening is great but the performance is really off-putting for me. Had to stop.

If you like shmups, Rolling Gunner, Psyvariar Delta and Ikaruga are all brilliant. Divinity Original Sin 2, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Okami, Dragon's Dogma are all fantastic and great ports for handheld.

Indies...too many. It's an insane library of games.

A friend bought Dragonball Fighter Z on a whim last night as it’s something ridiculous like 70% off and we gave it a bash knowing nothing about it and... wow, it’s kinda brilliant.

It looks and feels like you’re playing the cartoon with gameplay that’s hugely rewarding to button-bashers like us - we were zipping around pulling off spectacular-looking combos and teleporting across the screen with no ken of how we were doing it but giggling our heads off as yet another character got smashed into a cliff side in the background with a satisfying crash. It’s high camp of the very finest Japanese vintage.

And all that before we even knew what the buttons did; imagine what it’s like if you know what you’re doing? I immediately went home and bought it, lovely stuff.

Yes you can create a Nintendo account online now and link it to your son’s profile on the Switch later, @SeanR

You can then buy and redeem an eShop voucher against the account on the website - not sure about online membership, if it’s a code it should theoretically work in the same way But I can’t find a Nintendo how-to page to verify that.

I'm not so sure. I'm hopeful, but I can't see what they'd do with a second game on the same hardware. Be nice to get regional/global Splatfests back. But people are still playing it - getting a tad quieter at some times, mind.

S2 made sense because it launched on the new console and brought a lot of players over.
