This took a lot of work, especially for all the additional materials (hence the price). I even got to do the game's super plays, which were a lot of fun.

What’s actually extra on it?

Can’t seem to find anything about a physical release? I don’t want it on digital

I have also rejoined the Club Nintendo this week. Bought a Switch at launch in 2017... played BOTW, Oddysey extensively when my first child was born. Sold it around 2019.

Now going to repeat the cycle with an OLED Switch when my second one is born, right before TOTK. My daughter also hit a good age to be exposed to all the Nintendo goodness (and Just Dance). I promised her a big gift when her baby brother gets born next month. And of course daddy is going to get some time to when mummy and the little ones sleep.

I got Metroid Prime Remastered (such sweet memories) with it. I have got Advance Wars and Zelda TOTK on pre-order. Oh and also pre-ordered Samba de Amigo as it will always remain a Sega cultist with Dreamcast being my favorite and most transformative console of all times. I am also a big fan of Fire Emblem but not still deciding if Engage or Three Houses will be more to my liking. Not sure if I am going to enjoy all the social busywork of TH.

Hope Nintendo will give it everything for another 2-3 years with the Switch while also launching a Switch 2 somewhere with backwards and forwards compatibility like it's supposed to be done nowadays. Still don't thrust those bean counters in Kyoto to do the right thing but Nintendo Online was a step in the right direction. Also DS -> 3DS was nicely handled so I hope they learned their lesson and carry those 120+ million customers into the future with them.

Sounds like Nintendo will quite easily sell another 20-25 million Switches this year. Impressive run.

Yeah, I remember playing Mario Odyssey and thinking it was a shame my son was too young to play games but I’m keen to get him going on it now with Assist mode on.

Played a bit of MK8 this morning. Looks great on that screen but it gave me a terrible cramp in my right hand. Going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for a pro controller because I’m not playing Zelda with those crappy joycons.

Oh and OLED owners there is a setting in the system settings which lets you choose between vivid and normal on the built in screen. It’s set to vivid by default and personally I think it makes games look overly saturated. Odyssey looks particularly off with it on.

As well as the pro controller, two essential accessories for me are a grip for when playing handheld (skull and co do great ones) plus little joycon controller grips for multiplayer. This sort of thing https://www.amazon.co.uk/FASTSNAIL-Nintendo-Wear-resistant-Gamepad-Controller/dp/B07WTBBZQL/ref=mp_s_a_1_7_sspa?crid=1VPP2A9QCBW2S&keywords=joycon+grip&qid=1680342723&sprefix=joycon+grip%2Caps%2C302&sr=8-7-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfbXRm&psc=1

Life changing.

Stupid question but I have a switch oled ordered for Zelda. I sold my original a few years ago. I assume I can just log on to my account and download digital games purchased again ?

Thats my dream wish really. Been watching some old presentations and the Odyssey ones were so good, I'd really like another one on the current Switch. They must have something planned for the second half of the year but I get they don't want to distract from Zelda at the moment.

That is probably my biggest gripe with gaming in general. Everything just seems to take so long these days. I’ve no doubt TOTK will be Epic but it’s 6 years since BOTW and nearly 6 since Odyssey. I’ll be dead before the next Zelda game comes out.

It's literally listed on the eShop text, but okay.

In additional to the all-new localization and uncensored version of Valken you get...

  • Fully translated 80 page guidebook, of which 40 pages cover the game's backstory and lore. This book is a big deal in Japan, so getting it out in English was a must basically.
  • Never before seen pre-production artwork for the game.
  • New artwork by Satoshi Urushihara.
  • Arranged and game soundtrack player.
  • Full translated manual and CD booklet.
  • New interview with Satoshi Nakai about how he designed the mecha in the game (up until now, no-one knew who had designed the game's mecha).
  • Super plays (by me!)

You also have all the features that M2 added into the game, such as fully customizable controls, save/load states, new retro screen filters, being able to record your playthroughs and loads of other stuff.

There's a lot.

Physical is still in discussion, so still not confirmed.

One for the sales, I reckon. There's been an English patch for the Japanese version available for years, so the new translation would need to be pretty stellar for me to pay fifteen quid.

Well, the guy who did the translation for Valken Declassified is more versed in mecha anime and mecha games than the, admittedly lovely people, at Aeon Genesis. Also the fan translation had a lot of typos and mistakes.

That aside, our translator handled all the other material in the game, such as the 80 page guidebook. That means the translation for the game ties all the correct terminology from the official lore into the English translation.

Then there's all the extra content, of which there is a lot.

To put it into perspective, if you were to buy the original game in Tokyo right now, that would cost you 220 quid (if not a lot more), the CD soundtrack is around 60 quid, the guidebook (if you can find it) is 30-40 quid. Not to mention all the new content that isn't available elsewhere, such as the new Satoshi Urushihara artwork, all the pre-production artwork and an interview with Satoshi Nakai about how he designed the mecha for the game.

Considering how much it would cost to buy the separate parts in Valken Declassified right now, plus all the extra content you get and how much work it took to bring out, 15 quid is pretty reasonable.

Thank you! I didn’t know that and totally agree it looks overblown. Will change that later 😃

I'm quietly confident there will be.  There can't have been many years with no Mario games released at all (if we don't count Mario Kart 8 dlc).

If it were up to me, we'd be getting Mario Wii All Stars.  Mario Galaxy 2, NSMB Wii and Super Paper Mario.

The original Assault Suit Valken is not £220 in Japan.

Depends on where you buy it, but Amazon Japan goes from 220 quid to 1,200 quid for a boxed copy.

However, if you buy it unboxed on Surugu-ya (which is only really doable if you live here) then you pay about 25 quid.

That's still more than 15 quid, and that doesn't include the cost of buying the guidebook and the CD soundtrack.

That makes no sense, but okay. Will keep you posted on the physical version then.

The beauty these days is that you can play it digitally to your hearts content without having to switch carts etc. and then keep the physical release, should it arrive, all nice and pristine for the collection.

It makes sense as anyone who really is interested in this re-release wants the soundtrack, art book & extras to be physical items, not tied to a digital Switch release.

I could google all those things for free.

Not in English though. Plus, having it all included digitally is just convenient for many people.

There's a bunch of boxed and complete copes on eBay for under £100.

Right, but I was talking about buying the game in Tokyo.

In any case, 100 quid is still a lot more than 15 quid.

That's quite the technicality! 🤯

Who the here is going to go to buy the game in Tokyo?

Plus, if you hadn't dramatically boosted the price to make some stupid point, you wouldn't look like a bullshitter.

Not at all, I live and work in Tokyo. Valken is a Japanese game, so I looked at the prices here first. I also posted a range of links showing that you can spend a lot to actual insane amounts on a boxed copy of the Super Famicom game if you are that way inclined. Also, it wasn't as though I made up those prices, they are there on those sites I linked to. Clear as day.

The point was and still is that a physical copy of the original Super Famicom game will put you back more than 15 quid.

Yeah, I don't see the problem with @Cacophanus' response to my earlier post. There's clearly been a load of work put into the release.

If anything I'd like to encourage more Japanese developers to consider re-localising their old games, but I don't know how much I'd pay for that when it's something I already own and have been able to play without issue for decades. This isn't a Moon Remix scenario where the translation was the first time I'd had the opportunity to play it properly.

Why are you all being such a bunch of dicks to someone who has clearly put a lot of effort into a game they care about?

If you don’t want to play the game it doesn’t matter to you whether it costs a hundred quid or a thousand but all arguing with this guy like he needs to sing for his supper is total shittery. Particularly on this forum, where usually just mentioning you’ve made a game bags you a load of green.

Agreed. Sure @Cacophanus has rubbed people up the wrong way here historically and arguably been a bit of a dick about things BUT you can’t say that for this specific topic. He’s given a lot of interesting and useful background on this for us.
