Nintendo Switch

I watched the presentation and then went and ordered one on Amazon. Then I came here and caught up with this thread, and now I feel like cancelling and throwing myself off the roof. Seems like the general view is they've blown it, whereas I thought it looked really good - this is the true successor to the Wii. Proper fun.

The Wii was relatively affordable and had a bundled game which was a  mass system-seller in its own right...

The price is just the reality of the world we live in post Brexit, with the weak pound. Pre-brexit, when the pound was about $1.45 dollars, would have seen this come in at about £230. Now, with the pound at $1.2, it's £280. $299 = £245. Add 20% VAT on there... and you actually come out at about £298. It is what it is.

As it's region free, and if you can find someone to ship it over for less than £30, it might be cheaper to buy it from America.

The Wii wasn't a handheld, nor did it have it's own screen etc etc. The lack of 1-2-Switch as a pack in is a missed opportunity, though.

Yeah no-one is going to pay 280 quid for the machine and then 40 quid for 1,2 Switch so they can play a ball counting simulation or pretend to milk cows.

For 180 quid you could play bowling and tennis in your living room on the Wii. Completely different proposition in terms of both price and mass market appeal.

Oh, I still think I'll get a Switch at some point but the launch line up doesn't scream 'buy me now' particularly if people own a Wii U where the same major launch title is coming out, similarly pretty identical and at half the current price.

I was hoping for some major Virtual Console stuff - hoping that we'd finally get the Netflix of Nintendo games which would work really well for a monthly or year price, particularly with the portable nature of the console.

The accessory pricing is crazy, something like £60 for a pro controller and £70 for the additional little controllers.

So at some point the Switch will become worth owning but really if you have a Wii U, the first essential game looks to be Mario at Christmas.

Welcome to the party, pal!!

Yeah, things looked really optimistic (I woke up my six year old son to watch it and he's absolutely fire up for it). There was a bit of a lull when it came to third party games (I guess Nintendo were trying to do their fellow Japanese companies a favour by giving them presence on the stage) but then it ended on an absolute high - the most incredible Zelda is launching with it! Add a fantastic looking MARIO game, Splatoon 2, ARMS which looks like fun and FIFA for the kids, plus the console looks great - much more stylish and certainly good specifications. It's even got positive coverage on theBBC and was mentioned on Absolute Riadio this morning...

Then I come on here and it's all doom and fucking Gloom.

"Its too expensive, it should have been £199. There's not enough games on day 1 (even though I'm not buying it because it's too expensive), where's F-Zero/Wave Race/Urban Champion, you have to pay for online (like both MS and Sony) and they only give you ONE GAME FOR FREE (which we don't know how much online is going to cost or how that game will work with online functionality)."

Yeah, it could have been cheaper, yeah, it could have had more games (or at least more insight into the long term games being developed), but Nintendo seem like they're genuinely back on form and they're really showing the next generation of developers at Nintendo (so Miyamoto only gets a few seconds).

Im still getting one in July as a combined birthday present for myself and my son because it looks fucking brilliant fun.

I wish Nintendo would just do a blizzard and release their games on the PC via their own store front.

I'm beginning to think the best thing about the Switch will be it forcing Nintendo into third-party developer status. I can't see it succeeding. Not at those prices. Not with it being a confused mashup of gimmicks.

And most of the first party stuff are either literally ports of Wii U games or enhanced Wii U games which have been out for years.   They either needed to have the balls to cancel Zelda for the Wii U or have Mario ready for launch.

This is one of the major fears I had. They've had this 'lead with ports of previous gen games' problem for the last two consoles.

The other big thing is obviously seeing a weak launch line-up and thinking ahead to whether the console will have the same Wii U problem of a very sparse release schedule.

Of the announced games Zelda and MK8 are the only ports aren't they?

well, Nintendo ports yes.

The majority of 3rd party stuff is ports of old games.

Splatoon was supposed to be a enhanced port but has been turned into a sequel. Smash is rumored to be a enhanced port too, but not much has been said.

Was hoping to see this ubisoft mario/rabbids game.

Disappointed - there's very very little there to tempt me.  I'm getting plenty of gaming time from my Wii U (as are my kids) but why on earth would I want to fork out an extra £280 to play slightly upgraded versions of the games I have?  The Skyrim remaster looks okay (playing Skyrim on the move?  Awesome!) but it's half a decade old FFS, yet it won't be ready for launch?

They couldn't have canned Zelda for the Wii U - I think that would have been unforgiveable considering how long Wii U owners have been waiting for it but it really is the only game I saw which made me think "wow!".  But I'm getting it for the Wii U so no loss there.

I didn't like the look of Mario TBH - why introduce a more realistic look?  The whole point of Mario is that it isn't realistic.

Hopefully, the first 18 months or so of the Switch will introduce more original games as well as reducing the price but right now, if you had £280 to spend on a new console, I can't see why you wouldn't opt for a PS4 or a XB1 with a few games as opposed to this.

I agree that it's being released too early.

What happens if the Pound crashes even harder during the course of the year? :( We are in an era when consumer goods are going to get more expensive over time.

Shit. BUY ALL OF THE NINTENDO SWITCH! INVEST IN GAME.
