Nintendo Switch

Fuck it... I'm going to stick to my pre-order.

Yeah the launch line up seems abysmal (like how is 1-2 Switch not a pack-in title?! I could've brought it to my family and friends and perhaps had some fun but as it is now that will never happen. It will remain docked.) and there are loads of other things which are just mind boggling (32Gb storage, online being even worse than before, price, etc) but at the end of the day all I care about is playing quality Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. Their games have always managed to put a smile on my face and make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The barrier to entry is a little steep (€250 and this thing would've sold like hot cakes) and god only knows what other problems will crop up down the road but as it is now I get to play the latest Zelda on day 1 and I just can't wait to play the fuck out of that. Then later I get to look forward to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime 4 (obviously that's coming, right?) and err... other titles. Right Nintendo?

So yeah... I'm excited, I think.

Where were the Gamecube games btw? Was that just a false rumour then?

This is the company that invented the handheld console sold without a charger.

Thing is - we all know Nintendo are cheap cunts. They have always been tight, greedy bastards. And they always get away with it because we like their games. I'm not even balking at the launchprice - it's no bargain, but compared to other newly launched consoles it isn't excessive. But Jesus, WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES? Wii U port at launch, Wii U port in April, Wii U port annex sequel (which may well be little more than a glorified expansion pack for all we know) in Summer and then Mario at Christmas. What kind of lineup is that? What the fuck have they been doing the last few years?

When the Wii U was released it was also a bit sparse, but at least that had Zombi U and Lego City Undercover as diverse and good exclusives.

Is usb-c just a micro USB that most phones use?

USB-C is the new super funky do anything port as used on the new Mac laptops and high end Android phones.  It does charging, video & audio, and pretty much anything else all through one dinky little port.

As expected, FIFA looks to be based off of the 360/PS3 versions.

I mean, this is kind of expected, no one makes games at 360/PS3 level anymore - people expecting more third party stuff to be announced at Treehouse are kind of deluding themselves.

They already announced Ubisoft B-team stuff, Telltale, some B-tier Japanese devs and downloadable indies. That's it, they have 100% of the games that could work on the system.

More negative nuggets round-up:

*only 720p

*only 32gb internal storage

*only 3 hrs game time on battery

*doesn't charge when docked (seriously?) - separate charging cable (this can't be true...)

*no internal speakers - headphone only (again is this verified because that would kill the portable local multiplayer on games like MK unless they expect you to buy a speaker seperately)

There are speakers on the bezel.

I'd be baffled if it doesn't charge when docked. I imagine the separate charging cable is for those who want to carry the console as a portable but not bring the dock with them.

Of course it will charge when docked. Look at the lunacy if it didn't. I come home from using it all day and it's ran out of battery. I put it in the dock and carry on playing. Later that night, I have to take it out of the dock, hook it to a usb-c connector to make sure it's charged for tomorrow... No. That won't happen. It'll charge when docked. I'd be flabbergasted if it didn't.

I can't complain about the price, I bought PSVR for £350, a PS4 peripheral for that much money! But what I can say is that I feel no pull to buy a Switch like I did with PSVR. Yeah I've pre-ordered one as a precaution but have every intention of cancelling as things stand right now. We've all heard how Nintendo get a free pass when it comes to pulling crap like content ID on videos but with Switch I really do think the free pass has expired, people are tired of them doing the same thing with regards 3rd party support and baron release schedules and expecting a different result with sales.

Nostalgia will only get them so far and I fear there have been at least a couple of generations where Nintendo hasn't been relevant to kids and the vast majority of their trade has been to people like us who remember the good old days but that's not enough any more, I was hoping Switch would change that and I doubt it will. I feel quite sad that they're making the same mistakes over and over. Their business is video games and yet it's like they have no idea what they're doing or how the gaming landscape stands in 2017, almost as if they're trapped in a little bubble in a far away country that has a totally different culture and what they make is for them but it won't appeal to many outside of that bubble. Perhaps there's nowt wrong with that but if the future of the company depends on this selling well then it could be a problem for them.

One thing that I do find a bit of a shame is that if we are to consider this Nintendo's latest home console, the company is further behind the curve in terms of power than it ever has been. It's essentially an upgraded Wii U, a system that came out late in the 360 / PS3's tenure and was more or less on par with them - that's like releasing a supercharged N64 three years into the PS3 / 360's life.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a nice concept and, in fact, as handheld hardware, rather exciting - were it positioned explicitly as a handheld console boosted by the ability to play the games on TV, this feeling wouldn't exist (the anaemic software line-up, on the other hand...). I just think it's a bit of a shame that Nintendo as a competitor in the home console space has receded further still into the distance.

Out of all of those, the only issue that is a concern would be battery life.

The screen on the machine is 720p, that is perfectly fine for a screen of that size. The machine when docked can output 1080p, from what I've read. The 32GB internal storage can be supplemented with SD cards, which are cheap and very easy to get hold of.

The other two just sound completely stupid and if they are true I'll cancel my preorder and never buy one.

Just imagine Nintendo had gone third party. We'd have Zelda in 6 weeks and Mario at the end of the year, could play them in 4k and it would only set us back 80 quid and we would have working online.

No but you need Nintendos combination of hardware and software design to enable unique experiences not available elsewhere such as rock, paper, scissors and marbles in a box.

Marbles in a fucking box.
