No but you need Nintendos combination of hardware and software design to enable unique experiences not available on third party platforms such as rock, paper, scissors and marbles in a box.

Marbles in a fucking box.

Has it been confirmed yet whether you NEED to use the smartphone app for online, or whether it's an optional extra?

I'm asking because my phone is provided by work but it's a crappy Nokia Windows phone. Apart from the fact that Nintendo are unlikely to release their app for Windows phones, even if they did it wouldn't work properly and would constantly crash based on my experience of every single other app I've ever tried on it.

Please tell me online works without the mobile app. This is a deal breaker for me.

TECH SPECS

We currently don't know the tech specs, but Nvidia have provided some of the tech, and it seems likely it is based on the Tegra 2 chip.

Here's all the bits, and how they fit together:

It doesn't work without the mobile app. Well, it probably does, except for the bits around sending game invites and doing voice comms:

Quote

Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games ─ all from your smart device.

Doesn't sound like an option, sounds like the console itself doesn't do those things at all. And without them I imagine it's going to be difficult to set up play sessions, though I guess, depending on the title, you can just play matchmade against randoms with no comms. It can't require a smartphone in order for you to actually use the online functionality of the title itself - obviously that'll just happen through the console. But you'll still have to pay for it, and not have party invites and comms. It's not really clear how the lobby system works either. I guess wait and see what the US users think of the service, since it's not available here at launch anyway.

Shopto have updated their £9,999.99 price to £279.85. Save 14p over Amazon!

They also have a 'Switch Store' up today, but it only features with a couple of shitey accessories so far. I'd expect more over time:

It should be noted that ShopTo are the shop that tried to tell customers who had goods damaged in transit that they had no recourse.

Out of all of those, the only issue that is a concern would be battery life.

The screen on the machine is 720p, that is perfectly fine for a screen of that size. The machine when docked can output 1080p, from what I've read. The 32GB internal storage can be supplemented with SD cards, which are cheap and very easy to get hold of.

The other two just sound completely stupid and if they are true I'll cancel my preorder and never buy one.

I wouldn't worry about any of them, because it's misinformed bullshit.

The battery has, worst case, 3 hours - most cases it's 6+ hours.

Kudos to Gameseek for honouring their pre-order price.

In a post on its website, GameSeek said "everybody" who ordered a Switch with the company will see their pre-order honoured at £198.50. This morning, Nintendo revealed the Switch carries a UK retail price of £279.99.

In a follow-up conversation with Eurogamer, GameSeek boss Stephen Staley said nearly 1000 people pre-ordered at the low price (GameSeek takes payment up-front with pre-orders).

Yes, which isn't "3 hours battery life"

Had no idea the joy-cons where so advanced. (Crazy rumble, hand recognition camera, secret shoulder buttons etc)

Didn't think the joy-con grip came with the system (or that it charged them up), or the wrist straps with the shoulder button bumpers.

Didn't think the screen would be quite so nice.

So can kinda understand why they've priced it as they have.

Still, should have trimmed it right back in terms of all the fancier features (rumble, camera stuff (keep the form factor)) , have a non-charging joy-con grip packed in, and targetted £199.

if anywhere-multiplayer is really what they are hanging their hat on not having a bundled game is idiocy

I agree. 1 2 Switch looks fun to try, but pay for it?

Overall I really like it. I'd love one but I'm going to have to wait until it's sitting around the £230 mark with a game.
