There's no WTF tag in Discussion. Does anyone know what's going on? I have two links

https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/3cyq02/derek_smart_can_you_believe_this_guy_2nd_article/

In the second link Derek says he's got this but I couldn't make it all the way through. I think he's saying Star Citizen is going to be a disaster and he's going to sort that shit out in court but I dunno. Does anyone know how this started?

tl;dr: Star Citizen is a clusterfuck and Derek Smart comes across as a conceited loon.

The first bit isn't remotely surprising, even if some of the details are new. I have no idea who Derek Smart is, so I guess that bit is kind of surprising.

I think he's saying SC is a giant badly run borderline con but he's got our backs and he's going to sort it. Maybe. I dunno. It's a bit hard to read.

I think he's putting an article on his blog tomorrow. Perhaps that will explain things better

I have no idea who Derek Smart is, but he crops up in my feed a lot because (I think) I'm Facebook friend with JPickford. I don't really like his tone of voice or conceitedness. But I gather he wrote an article or two stating the pretty obvious fact that Star Citizen is fucked and borderline misrepresenting stuff to its backers, and is attracting heat over it.

I don't keep up with Internet drama though, so I'm sure I'm missing 3000 posts of bullshit across a variety of social media aggergators. That GamerGate thread confuses the fuck out of me.

Derek Smart is pretty famous for ludicrously hyping up Battlecruiser 3000AD, and then delivering a completely broken mess, and being completely mental on the internet about it.

Star Citizen has no shortage of problems, but Derek Smart is probably the least appropriate person possible to complain about them.

No, that was his publisher's fault for releasing it in an alpha state, he was... OH MY GOD, HE'S GOTTEN TO ME!

So Star Citizen is basically like Elite IV but from the creator of Wing Commander? They're even doing the "one chunk at a time" approach. What's this guy's problem?

It's taken 80m in crowdfunding and there's almost nothing to show for it thus far. Elite Dangerous had a fraction of that and is actually a complete product.

Who knows what is going on but I think there is a very good chance of that game never being 'out'.

There doesn't even need to be something dodgy going on, Star Citizen sounds like a ludicrously ambitious project and there's also a very real possibility that Roberts & Co will run into the reality of the difficulty of developing such a game - even with the best of intentions.

I never knew about any of this until I saw this thread.

How on earth did they manage to crowd fund to the tune of 80 million? Mental.

And they just delayed the FPS module didn't they? I can understand why some people are starting to think there's something dodgy going on.

Just look at it though. Alongside the utterly cringe inducing "radio chatter" between the people demo'ing it's just.

It transpires that there are more than enough people out there willing to spend four figure sums on pretend spaceships (that you can lose permanently) to use in a game that doesn't yet exist. In many respects it's the same kind of thing Candy Crush does, just without having the game to actually use your digital tat in. It's nuts!

And yes, different parts of the game have been farmed out to different developers, it's a monumentally complex project for what is essentially an indie.

It's perhaps simultaneously the most exciting and depressing thing in gaming at the moment. If it all works - amazing, a fantastic AAA budget game made without a publisher. If not..

A lot of crazy people are treating them as investments which they perceive will only go up in value.
