This game man,

40 hours in, have loved every second of it, without spoilers, I felt like the game was coming to its conclusion…..

ACT 2

What!? I’m glad as I really don’t want this to end! I’ve bought a 3DS XL with 5 and 8 to have a go at after this

XI has some good QOL stuff but eight is still a better game, I think. Five is brilliant as well.

The localisations are simply the best in the business.

Just got the credits in this, really enjoyed the comparative challenge of “last” couple of bosses.

I understand there’s some pretty meaty post-game stuff after the credits that I feel I’d quite like to see, but I’m not sure if can face another 40+ hours. I was hoping to park it and move onto fucking about with some Soulsborne expansions as an Elden Ring warm-up before that comes out.

Any idea how long it would take to complete the DQ11 post-game story and beat the final final boss?

It took me 70 hours playing quite leisurely in the main game to see the credits, dabbling in the odd side quest and exhausting NPC dialogue around the various towns.

It doesn't matter how long it will take, do it!!! The post game is the best bit.

Yeah, I mean I am quite up for it, I’m not even that bored with it just yet. I think it helps that the traditional turn-based combat combined with the lovely pastoral locations make for a mostly relaxing experience, meaning I can play it for a bit before bed even during my currently mental working weeks, which isn’t something I’d likely be able to do with the Soulsborne stuff.

You’ve just done act two of a three act story.  The real magic is about to happen so keep going!  My complete playthrough was c.125hrs in the end - Lv.99 with all the best gear.

Ok, yeah I played an hour or so into the post credits yesterday afternoon and got a sense that things are going to get a bit more interesting with the story, so I’m pretty up for it and likely spending the next few weeks still playing goddam Dragon Quest XI.

I highly recommend googling the island you can go to find lots of metal slimes and level up quickly. Saves a lot of th grind.

I'm trying this for the third time after I played it on PS4 and Switch and just couldn't get into it. After seeing everyone bang on about it, including in the Top Games of All Time thread, I decided to pick it up again on the Switch eShop, with the hope that I'd be more invested in it if I bought the digital version and couldn't just sell it on.

Anyway, I've just tipped over the six hour mark, which is a lot further than I ever got before, and I'm *hoping* that it might have clicked for me this time. I think the issues I had with it previously - how uber-traditional it is, how it doesn't seem to take any risks at all, and how much of a doofus the main character looks - still stand, but, I dunno, maybe I just wasn't in the mood before. I seem to be into it now. It's far from the most scintillating of games, but the myriad of little QoL concessions means that it goes down very easily, and it's a nice game to just sink into at the end of a long day in handheld mode. I'm really hoping I stick with it this time and that the battle system opens up a bit more.

Watch this space, I suppose.

@Jamie John Pretty much same over here. I originally bought this for PS4, played for a few hours and got bored, picked it up on Switch (it would be better suited to a handheld, right?), played a few hours and got bored. Restarted on hard mode because maybe it was too easy, played a few hours and got bored. Sold the game.

I bought it again a few weeks ago because I felt like playing a cute JRPG, and carried on with my save (it does a great job of recapping the story). I’m about 10/11 hours in now, and getting a little bored again.

It’s odd, because on paper it’s my ideal game really. There are a few posts in here that suggest it doesn’t get going into 20 hours-or-so in, I think? Which is pretty ludicrous, but also makes me want to keep going.

I loved playing it over Christmas and new year. My idea was that I would have it well done and dusted in time for Elden Ring coming out, but the bastarding thing just would not end and I never finished the third (post-credits) arc before ER, even factoring in that game’s slight delay.

Both games combined means I’ve played fuck all games this year, compared to the previous few Covid-addled bumper years, where I was battering through multiple games a month.

One thing that hasn't settled for me yet is the difficulty. I started this time with the harder monsters setting turned on, and that was providing a good level of challenge for a while. Then I got to the King's Barrow dungeon and found I was just burning through MP and herbs trying to keep everyone alive, until I got killed by some robot chickens. I warped back to the church after that and turned off the harder monsters Draconian Quest thing, but now I'm one-shotting everything. Something in the middle would be ideal, where you're forced to engage with the different battle mechanics but don't have to grind in order to stay alive.

Can I turn hard mode back on again now that I've turned it off?

I don't think so. I remember when the game first came out I actually restarted my 8 hour save file so I could enable the harder monsters. After that I found the difficulty (I didn't finish it) nicely pitched. Quite challenging but nothing too brutal.

If you need some motivation to keep going I suggest watching Tim Rogers review, it's the most enthousastic thing you will ever see:

Yeah, totally agree. I restarted to play on the harder difficulty which made the regular battles a lot more fun, but when I came back to it recently a dungeon I played was crazy hard (unless you’re just meant to spam herbs? Which doesn’t sound fun), so I switched back to my easy save which was more or less at the same point.

Trust the process. It gets really good! One of the best Rpg of all time. All. Time!

I know, this is what I keep hearing! But the opening (< 20 hours) is so plain, it’s just hard to believe at this point. I’ll continue to crack away.

You have my certified seal of approval. It gets so good you cannot even begin to  comprehend at this point.

On the other hand I'd say that if the first 20 hours don't do it for you the rest of the game is probably not going to change that. It is really good, but it's also very traditional. It's not going to do anything radically different gameplay wise, it's all about the total package of setting, story and traditional turn based battling.

Yeah, it doesn't do anything different later on, there's just more of it.  It's not a game (or a series) that's about wowing you with new ideas or concepts or mechanics.  It's about doing the familiar things so, so well, with the highest levels of care and attention.
