Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition for every platform! (including Xbox Game Pass)

I'm likely in the minority of finding the third act of the game a real whimper. While the combat remains as simplistically enjoyable as ever, narratively it took a real dive in my mind after the thoroughly enjoyable second act. Felt bolted on and really brought out the worst elements of it being a 'traditional' JRPG. If you've never played a mainline DQ before then the novelty of its old school styling in the modern era might give it an interesting angle, but ultimately I came out of it thinking it the weakest of all the numbered titles I've played (IV, V, VIII and IX).

Still far from bad, but it's likely going to come down to how much of an affinity you have for the trappings of an 80's JRPG with modern production values.

Also, you’ve probably already seen them, but if not (and for anyone else who may have missed them), Tim Rogers’ Kotaku “reviews” for both versions of the game are fantastic:

Yes I’ve seen those, but ages ago so I’ve forgotten the content, which suits me fine.

The music is starting to grow on me actually…

Personally I thought it was good but not a masterpiece. My main gripe (other than the music) is that the tone and story is just a little bit too po faced to sustain such a long game. If you don’t mind those more traditional stylings then I think you’ll be fine.

The real strength of the game for me was the variety of towns and the well written NPCs. There are also a lot of good (but fairly predictable) cut scenes and story beats.

Yes, it’s nice music but there’s like three minutes of it.

I found the home village section a bit annoying - I want to go exploring everywhere like in BOTW but you just can’t jump properly - here’s a fence you can jump, and next to it is a fence you can’t jump, same height. Why? Nobody knows!

Then I got on the horse and it was again impossible not to compare it unfavourably with BOTW again. I’m going to give it another go tonight but it feels like not the sort of game I’m going to enjoy, mainly because I’ve been spoiled by the best and they seem so similar.

I liked the music. Maybe those who disliked it played the OG non-S version, which was all MIDI?

Nope. The midi stuff is much worse!

There's nothing wrong with the music as such, but I didn't think it was anything special and tracks were reused so often that they became very repetitive. This seems to be less of an issue in the second act, so far at least, but for a long time it seemed every town had the same generic town music for instance. The overworld theme was also quite overbearing, and ended up becoming a bit much. The DQVIII overworld theme you can switch to fits a lot better in my opinion.

It's nothing at all like BOTW, so if you're after an experience like that then you're playing the wrong game really. The world does eventually open out a bit, but while it does reward a small amount of exploration it never does anything interesting in terms of how you get from A to B.

I understand it’s nothing like it - what I’m saying is there are so many similarities it’s impossible not to compare the two, to Dragon Quest’s disadvantage. It feels like a BOTW knock off in look and feel.

...playing another game that you might actually enjoy?

How am I supposed to know if I enjoy it without playing it?

Listen, I am going to play this exactly as much as I want, and the things I dislike about it I’m going to post about here at great - perhaps even torturous - length. If there’s anything I like it might get a very slight mention, but all signs point to Dragon Quest XI being in for a world of pain.

Well, you do you! ...and I shall hit that ignore button like it's an option in an RPG menu!

Have you previously enjoyed playing any other JRPG @ZOK?

I was trying to think about that…FFVII obviously, one of the DS Mario & Luigi time travelling ones, but I don’t think I’ve played that many. Chrono Trigger…I’m sure there are others, but I’m certainly no fan.

Well, that's a new one at least.

It does feel like a knock off of BOTW. Linkalike hero huffing and a puffing, rides a poor imitation of a BOTW horse (and the horse moves more like a slab), village is like a half-assed version of Hateno village, has chickens that you can’t pick up, etc etc. There’s nothing I’ve done so far in Dragon Quest XI that isn’t obviously a thousand times better to play in BOTW.

I don’t know why that’s so upsetting to read?

It’s not upsetting. It’s just a really odd take .

it’s like complaining that you can’t go and hijack cars in gran turismo like you can in gta

Well, it would be if GTA and Grand Turismo were visually, mechanically and thematically very similar.

But as they obviously aren’t, it’s nothing like that at all, and as a consequence merely a silly analogy.

I mean, it's quite impressive feat from SE to release a BOTW knock-off a mere four months after BOTW itself. I'm sure they'd have added liftable chickens if they had a bit longer.

Hmmm…I think I see the problem. You are having trouble with the words ‘feels like a knock off of BOTW’, which perhaps I should explain means ‘it feels like a knock off of BOTW’. You are then taking that to mean ‘it IS a knock off of BOTW’ and getting yourself in an internet tizzy over nothing.

Should anyone tell him that DQ8 had a lot of the same things and preceded Botw by about a decade?

By that logic, the Dragon Quest series stole everything off Legend of Zelda because it came out first.

And by ‘that logic’ I mean ‘if you want just want to be silly about it’.

Thinking this feels a lot less impressive and interesting than BOTW isn’t a bit, it’s just how I’m finding it. I don’t know why that’s controversial.

Surely there isn’t anyone who would suggest this is the better game?

These games have the best localisation in the industry. I prefer the spin off games like the warriors ones and builders because the gameplay is more enjoyable, mind you, dqxi is just far too traditional to engage me.

I don't see the relevance of the comparison to BotW though. Am I missing something? There's almost nothing alike.
