I can't do the first mission on 4.1 with the shield bearers. Any tips?

I found that one tricky, took me 3 or 4 goes. Basically, your focus should be on keeping your fencers alive as long as possible. Get as close as you dare to the 2nd Airstrike, and from then on you'll be baiting the Hectors, divide and conquer style. You want to avoid taking on multiple Hectors at all costs, unless you have a weapon that can put them down really quickly. Possibly go back and do mission 1 on a harder difficulty for some better weapons, or you can always just go farm armour pickups repeatedly.

4.1 requires some strategy!

I joined the series with 2017, and then picked up Global Defence Force for PS2. (For £5 from Morission's!) Despite the addition of Pale Wing, the extra variety of insects, and the ability to level Big Ben, it never quite grabbed me the way 2017 did. Most of that is actually down to the incidental stuff, like "EE DEE YEFF! EE DEE YEFF!", rather than any inherent gameplay limitations of the lesser platform.

Insect Armageddon was okay, the online co-op saving it from too much obvious Westernisation. (To be fair, some of the ideas were pretty good.) 2025 was wondrous, and I was shocked when I found a mission I couldn't get past. However, 2025 came at a time of house and job move, so it fell by the wayside.

4.1 is unquestionably the best EDF game. But, is it the best starting point? I'm not sure. Perhaps 2017 is the best, because it's where most of us fell in love with the series.

Basically, as soon as a Hector sees me, I'm dead. One hit.

Stop playing as Wing Diver! Switch to Ranger, and farm up a couple of AR upgrades. You NEED to be able to withstand plenty of hits, so sweep up as many red boxes as you can along the way, too.

I'm a ranger already, with about 600HP. I know about collecting red boxes - I have played EDF before! :)

You should be able to sail through that mission on Normal with that HP! I can't recall exactly what my weapons were, I think they were an AR14RAR Assault Rifle and an MMF40RA Sniper, but I managed to complete it on less than 300. You just have to be careful.

Take out the first Bear, let the 2nd one run. Stay with the Fencers, don't be anywhere near the Airstrike. You'll see the red lines on the radar, DON'T BE THERE. From here, don't pick fights with groups, if there are 2 Hectors and a Bear then try to take a Hector out ASAP. If you get the chance to waste the Bear, then take it, but it can't damage you so it can be left alive and mopped up later.

You'll almost certainly lose your Fencers along the way, but the longer you can keep them alive to take some hits for you the easier your life becomes.

Man, why the hell do I have to be at work? I so want to go back home and play more!

By now everyone must know when you get stuck, you replay level 2 and 3 on harder difficulties. As I said before, I had completed level 2 on Inferno within 45 minutes of buying EDF 4.1 by doing that.

My farming inferno with miniscule health vid

Is EDF 2 on the Vita a good place to start if I've never played any game within the series?

It's currently £6.99 on PSN.

Not sure. It's a port of the PS2 game so it might feel a little old. I would recommend picking up EDF 2017 Portable as your starting point. Really popular online still and probably cheaper than EDF2.

Disagree, EDF portable is very rough looking on a TV and nowhere near as nice as the 360 version, EDF2 is great but that's for later when you want to see the weird and interesting older stuff. 4.1 is by far the best start point, pick ranger or wing diver and play on a TV.

Isn't ginge planning to play on the Vita though? EDF 2017 is perfect for the handheld (and I'd pick that over 2), but for home consoles I'd play 4.x. :)

Whats the plan with that Angel, get a decent weapon from playing normally (on normal?) then return to 2&3 repeatedly?
In that video are you just tryign to get a hit on as many things as possible before the AI helps take them down?
Cheers for the Vid, excuse me if those questions are dumb, not played EDF for a good while so pretty rusty!

Do normal, get gun. Then hard a few times, get better guns, 2 or more hardest runs to get some level 40 odd weapons then farm the tits out of inferno. Keep the AI alive yep it stops the ants focussing on you.

I'm playing on whatever the default is. I presumably have a peashooter. Every other level so far has been a complete walkover with no deaths at all, and this one I've tried about 30 times and can take down just one bearer and nothing else.

Default is normal. A good strategy there is to bring two level two Fusion Blasters and the reason for that is that when it comes to Hectors, as soon as they're about to start shooting instinct is to run, but in many cases it's better to keep them stunned by using a weapon with continuous fire. The Fusion Blaster can't reload, but damage is so high that two of them is enough to take down everything in the stage and if you switch weapons after activating it, it will stop firing.

Whether you want to attack right away or wait when the air raids are about to commence is up to you. Attacking is slightly riskier, but also faster. It's easiest to leave the group in the river until you take down the other one, because you'll be closer to the shield bearer that spawns with the last wave of Hectors. Prevent that from joining up with the others.

Also remember that you can hide behind dead bodies until they disappear, which can be very useful if you can't hit and stun a remaining Hector from a group. And bring your allies with you for security (you only get the red triangle over their heads later in the mission. They'll move forward automatically until then) and keep an eye on their health. The Ranger can heal allies under his command when picking up health kits and sometimes it's worth picking one up just to heal the group.

You can also go back to earlier levels and grind weapons which will certainly make things easier, but it's not required as such.

One way of doing the mission: http://youtu.be/9p2tLnB8-T8

were you playing as a Fencer when that level caused you bother, I've found the need to lumber close to hectors quite tricky

Since you use the word "lumber", I have to ask if you know about the Fencer's dash cancel?

I think deKay said he was playing the Ranger earlier.
