Yep, that's definitely the only quantifiable way of measuring the influence of a games design. I dislike both Gran Turismo and Little Big Planet, but I would find it hard to question those 10's Edge gave based on their criteria.

You could expect them to score a platform game on whether it is a shit platform game or not. 8 or 9 is fine for Mario Maker, LBP was an emphatic 6.

How can anyone give LBP a perfect score when the actual platforming in that game is utter shite?

Some spectacular point missing here; I'm not a fan of LittleBigPlanet either. I'm just saying that comparing two reviews, most likely written by two different people over just short of a decade, is utterly pointless.

yes but they dont like to be seen as using individuals, theyre presented as the edge stance, the edge score as arrived to by consent. LBPs scores were crazy.

Not really. I'm saying, regardless of time in between reviews, how it is possible for anyone to give that game a 10 when the platforming is as terrible as it is.

You're right! Unlike Gran Turismo, which was of course the first ever racing game, Little Big Planet was not the first ever game to involve a level editor, and therefore it can in no way be seen as innovative or influential.

If the reviewer's had bylines and the magazine didn't enforce a house style of one, authorative voice of Edge then you'd have a point.

But that's not the case.

Aside from the who reviewed what point any scoring system that doesn't give MM full marks is a bit broken.

Fucking 6 for mad max. Despite the fact its the best game/movie franchise (and almost best Comic one) ever made.

Love the cover though.

A 6 is pretty fair if you come from a critical analysis of gaming mechanics and economy stretched to breaking point over 60 hours. If you've only played it for up to 10-15 hours then you've had the best of it.

Honesty bomb: I've had more enjoyment from LBP2 than Mario Maker (at least, so far).

Mario is very good, very pure and all that, but the stuff aside from the gameplay doesn't grab me as much. I find it kind of difficult to navigate in a way as well; finding specific levels using a specific code is pretty old-fashioned. It's a very gaming game for gamers, but I would love more cosmetic stuff, like a music editor or more varied backgrounds/blocks for use. I've no doubt the game will be expanded heavily eventually (like diagonal slopes, power-ups, different coloured blocks etc.).

LBP is flawed as fuck. But the design elements lead to ridiculous possibilities, some of which are still being discovered. I think. Platforming is not great, hookshot powerup was fantastic, so were the vehicles, the Move game was really fun and people somehow made Tesco value racers and FPSs.

LBP has far more gameplay styles, for what it's worth, and Mario Maker doesn't give you absolutely everything you could ever want, they're both equally not perfect. We're just in a very Nintendo heavy loving community.

Which is still better than the concept of a mostly Xbone loving community :: cringe ::

The real troll Mario Maker review was Metro.
