Someone already made the joke on Eurogamer, but this is truly in the ethos of Tom Nook. He'll be rubbing his little paws with glee won't he.

 

Anyway, was always going to happen, it makes perfect sense. I just hope it doesn't spell the end of full console versions of the franchises...

If they're as deep 'experiences' as Miitomo, we won't have to worry about that.

dont think AC has ever really been a console experience. I had the GC one, which was fun... but the DS version being portable got a lot of play time. Same with 3ds one but i only played for 30 hours or so before finally admitting it's not a game for me anymore.

Based on what? That there's one FE game due to come out on 3DS? There's pretty much fuck all to upsell to.

How many copies of Fire Emblem have they sold exactly? Tens of Millions? It would seem like there are plenty of new people that could be converted into a fan of the game but have no interest in paying serious money to try it, same for Animal Crossing, it's hardly Mario-level popular. They haven't chosen to use their really popular known brands, Fire Emblem is an odd choice if you want mass appeal.

 

They also spelled it out when Iwata first pitched the idea of going mobile, if anybody was paying attention to what they actually say.

Yet "Fire Emblem Heroes," an entry in the popular "Fire Emblem" series of strategy role-playing games, led sales rankings from its debut, underscoring the power of Nintendo's library of intellectual property.

Even so, Nintendo has no intention of switching focus to freemium games. "'Heroes' is an outlier," a senior company official said. "We honestly prefer the 'Super Mario Run' model."

Nintendo aims to do more with its smartphone games than make money. The Japanese company seeks to bring its games and characters to a wider audience and create synergy with game consoles such as the new Switch.

The problems with the gacha model, such as the large amounts of money often required for success, risk undermining the value of Nintendo's characters, which in turn could dent the company's bread-and-butter console-game business. Nintendo's apparent goal with smartphone games is to attract more users even if the company loses out on some profits in the process.

[Super Mario Run's] true value will be measured by how much it expands the ranks of Nintendo fans and helps sales of the Switch.

Something in the Zelda world would make sense from a brand familiarity point of view.  I can't see it actually being a standard Zelda game, though.  Games so far have been adapted quite a lot to suit the platform - as good mobile games should be.
