Oh man, that trailer makes me so happy. I absolutely love HDM and after the poor job they did with the film last time I'd given up hope of seeing it on screen (until it was announced a while back). That look absolutely amazing. A TV show is exactly what it needed too as a trilogy of films would never do it all justice.

I'm midway through a re-read of the trilogy after reading the Book of Dust, so this is all very timely. Any chance that this will be available on terrestrial at some point? (Edit: I'm being MASSIVELY dense. Saw the trailer said HBO and assumed it was on pay-per-view or similar, despite the BBC reference in the thread title.)

Also, what was the general issue with the film? I know that the religious elements were massively toned down, but assumed (maybe wrongly) that it never did enough at the box office to justify sequels. Was it a crap adaptation?

It wasnt the best no and the ending is butchered to fuck because apparently at test screenings

Spoiler

people thought Lyra died and was going to heaven rather than pass through to another world, so they cut it. They clearly hadn't been paying attention to rewrite of the film

These are books for intended for children as much as adults, but you know, some things are a lot more acceptable written down than on the screen. It really depends how they film it - the last book in particular.

The HBO run is rated "TV-MA", which I guess means it will be post-watershed in the UK.

I don't know the book or much about this, what sort of age rating is it likely to be?

The books are classified as children’s books, but there is a lot of darkness in there. Think Time Bandits or The Dark Crystal.

The books are usually classed as YA rather than children's books, although I remember Pullman saying that he had no specific audience in mind when he wrote them. They're incredible anyway.

This looks great! I was so disappointed with the reception to The Golden Compass movie that I still haven't bothered to watch it, but this has the potential to be amazing.

Phillip Pullman is on this weeks Adam Buxton podcast, and as always it’s a great listen.

Interestingly he says he likes them being classed as children’s books as more adults end up reading them that way. He feels there is less stigma with that than if they were in the fantasy section.

Rolling Stones review said it was a show that kept too many secrets and treats its audience like the adults treat Lyra  Maybe thats because the story is from her perspective ffs and of course it hold its secrets close to its chest because Pullman doesnt spunk his load in the first book.

But it's currently at 83% on RT from 23 reviews.

Rolling Stone is utter rubbish, though.

They have no such problem with Watchmen despite it really holding back - to the point of characters wearing hoods to prevent a viewer spoiler that makes no sense in the context.
