They have no such problem with Watchmen despite it really holding back - to the point of characters wearing hoods to prevent a viewer spoiler that makes no sense in the context.

 

I've never used them as a source for reviews, was just looking for the negative ones and found their view baffling.

Great cast giving great performances, and they've completely nailed the look & feel of the world. It looks like it's going to suffer from the usual BBC problem of not having enough room to breathe compared to 20-episode US shows though, they barreled through a lot of stuff really quickly.

I’m guessing that’s why they put up a spoilerific ‘coming next’ vid straight after the show for the lazy fucking morons who have extreme lack of patience for these things.

 

I enjoyed it a lot though. Very nicely done so far!

For me it flew by. I thought it was very faithful to the book but I wasn’t constantly comparing it either, I think they’ve done a fine job so far. Would love too see it in UHD.


I can appreciate people saying they don’t understand what’s going on but I remember the book being like that at the start too, and they did offer a brief explanation at the start of the show.

But that's just good story telling. Laying out a mystery at the start and unravelling it as we move along. Do people need everything spelling out for them from the get go?

That’s what I kept thinking, and hoping. Do you know if series one is just Northern Lights or does it go further?

The trailers seem to suggest this series is just Northern Lights. Makes sense to do a series per book.

Promising stuff, but I could see it losing viewers unfamiliar with the material a bit. Jumped around a lot in terms of location / perspective when maybe it should've stuck with Lyra. Also the Alethiometer looks wrong. The actress playing Lyra is capturing her curiosity and total lack of self-conciousness beautifully, even if she is maybe a few years too old for the role.

Blake-esque themes of innocence vs experience are of course central to the story, so imo a year or two here or there are still important. She comes across as a teenager which isn't ideal.

 

I reckon there's a 50:50 chance I'll be bawling my eyes out come the end of the third season though. Bring it on.

Still, there's lots of positives here. It has a great feel and it's very well written. Best of all is Keen who is pitch perfect

Overall I'm very impressed!

 

I didn't hate the film back when it came out, and seem to remember the worst thing about it was that it dashed through the first book in 2 hours, kind of like a "greatest hits" of scenes from the first book. (And maybe it changed too much stuff, I can't remember).

 

This is better. The pace seems quite slow, but that's a good thing, compared to the film. It looks just right. There's a lot of money on the screen. They're definitely not wussing out of the religious themes this time. The only mild problems are as others noted: background extras don't have daemons - it's a budget thing - I just have to pretend they have rats in their pockets or something. Also the alethiometer looks a bit cheap.

 

An adaptation is never going to fully be able to describe the connection people have with their daemons, and a million other deep things. But this is probably as good as it could be.

I love how the world is clearly Victorian, but also present day. In the film (and when reading) it is easy to forget it isn’t the past’ when compared to Will’s world.

 

Also, the foreshadowing in the title sequence is brilliant!
