Frankie Boyle has asked the most important question:

They roll around / play friskily with each other. Which is why .... BELLE SAUVAGE SPOILER

Gerard Bonneville's daemon is so nasty in La Belle Sauvage as she essentially pins down and hurts the other daemon.

I absolutely loved this - I think its a about as perfect as we're going to get, unless the budget is found to make more daemons.

I hated the film and I'm a huge fanboy of all the books. This comes pretty close to how I imagine the world to be and unlike the film doesn't make me want to purge my mind with dettol.

Ruth Wilson is perfect as Mrs. Coulter.

So, series 1 is definitely not just the Northern Lights, that's for sure.

That's good - I'm all for adaptations veering off a bit.

Makes things more interesting.

Liked this episode a lot - some quality acting all 'round.

It's been years since I read these books and I was wracking my brains trying to remember if what they showed tonight was in the first book or later on in the story.

I'm going to have to read them again I think add I am loving this at the moment. Just need to finish Joe Abercrombie's latest off first.

The tone of this is all over the place, mainly down to Pan and Roger’s terrible child acting, but otherwise it’s very good indeed.

Really enjoyed last night's episode again. The poor lad playing Roger is terrible I have to agree but I thought the voice acting for Pan was perfect. I always thought Pan felt like a more innocent childlike side 2 Lyra's quite acerbic personality. As as book geeks it's been quite nice how how this has deviated from the book and don't get me wrong we are absolutely loving this but did anyone else feel ....

That the reveal of Asrael being Lyra's dad was pretty awful and really should have been left for the Gyptians as per the original?

Re Subtle Knife talk:

Spoiler

I'm assuming they included those bits as a bit of backstory to explain the opening episode of the next season when the masked people come to Will's house. I also wonder whether the guy who appeared last night will be the one who gets killed.

I think that's a great idea to bring something from book two into this, I thought last night's episode was a huge improvement on the first one for me.

Some of the acting was a bit off, and the Gyptian stuff is very Eastenders now someone here pointed that out. But Lucian Msamati is amazing and I love him, and Ruth Wilson has won me over.

Wilson has been great, yes. I actually like the boy that plays Roger. He just needs better direction but he seems quite capable, although of course, I'm not on set.

I haven't minded the book deviations so far. It is what it is and so long as the overall thing retains the same feel, it's good for me.

Yeah, it was me who made the Eastenders comparison.  Maybe the production teams are next door to each other and they just borrowed some people?

Episode 2 was much better I thought. Keen is amazing and Wilson is excellent as well (although not a patch on Kidman IMHO).

A few few more random thoughts

1 - I also preferred Craig over Mcavoy.

2 - I'm really worried over who they've got to play Scorsbey. When I re-read Northern Lights a few months back I had Sam Elliot's voice in my head every time LS spoke. He was so perfect in the role I just can't see anyone playing it

3 - the costume design is terrible

4 - I wish they had left the crossover stuff for season 2

5 - Bakare needs more roles - he's fantastic

Bakare is great indeed. Although I thought Kidman was weak in the movie.

Although, don't like Craig in anything. He's a terrible actor.

Elliot was indeed good.

Costumes are ok!
