Mentazm's dive through RLLMUK's fave albums of 2015 continues with Chvrches.

It's okay. Afterglow is the stand out track. However it puts me in mind of Dot Allison and One Dove. An electronic band from Glasgow with two spods on keyboards and an attractive lady singing vocals up front, and Chvrches can't hold a candle to them. Dot Allison did a solo album called Afterglow which made me make the connection.

This song still gives me huge shivers...

Clutch - This is more like it. I really like the music but the vocals sounds like an ironic joke, like the vocalist is winking at us as he is singing. Reminds me of Tenacious D and Electric Six. I know they've been about for 20 years though, is that just the vocalists normal style?

Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness

This isn't really to my tastes. It's a big of lightweight fluffy noodling that I wouldn't normally listen to. I like Everytime Boots because it's a bit more uptempo and groovy, but I doubt I'll listen to the album again.

Jamie XX - In Colour

This is more my kind of music. However, it's all a bit too respectable for me. His use of old-school breaks, reese basslines and ragga samples instantly brings to mind hardcore and jungle, and you can't compete with those genres in my mind. They were exciting, against-the-grain and the fuel for nights of chaos in warehouses with ten thousand nutters. Slow it down to make it palatable for today's homogenised and watered down palette and the music is instantly a pale pastiche of former glories.

TBF though it's alright for a mellow sunday afternoon listening, and the second album I've listened to in the list after Grimes that I'll revisit sometime.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally a few days off work after working solid for the past 7 days so I thought I'd get back to this today whilst fucking about with my raspberry pi...

AFX - Soundcloud dump

I listened to Richie's mix of the best. I think I've made my thoughts on AFX plain before, I don't get him at all, and have never rated him as a producer or DJ. Electronica for indie kids who don't like real dance music. I mean there's a couple of tunes I thought were okay, but I would never listen to him through choice.

Sleater-Kinney - No Cities To Love

I had an inkling I'd like this already. I like girl rock bands, much prefer female vocalists to male, and am a pretty big fan of Brownstein's comedy. I reckon this is my favourite album in the list so far. Driven funky rock with good songs, tight playing and big hooks.

Marina and the Diamonds - Froot

Pretty sure I've heard a few tracks off this before, the title track definitely. I like it, kooky unique pop. I also liked her first album, I remember listening to it a fair bit.

Faith no More - Sol Invictus

That's definitely more FNM. Fine, if you like that kind of thing. I reckon this is a grower though, so have added it to my relisten pile.

The Prodigy - The Day is my Enemy

One of the few albums in the list I listened to last year. Seen them nearly 20 times, and have a been a big fan in the past. I really like Beyond the Deathray and Invisible Sun, and would really like Wild Frontier too if it wasn't for Keith's horrible vocals. He really should just shut up apart from Firestarter. The rest of the tunes are pretty much filler, and that Ibiza track with Sleaford Mods is horrible, can't stand them.

One of the remix EPs I have (EDIT: here) has an instrumental of this track - I originally thought it'd be better without the vocals too but it just makes the repetition even more obvious :(

"buys" hahahah

Is that just The Prodigy album, or music in general?

Genuine question. I've met some folk who have never paid for music in their lifetime. Mostly those that are younger than me, in the early 20's age group.

One fella I work with, just turned 22, massive metal fan, I asked him what he would do with any massive amounts of money or another job, and he said "I'd like to start a record label, to sign acts he liked and of a similar age". I replied that how the fuck was he going to make any money from it when he'd never bought a single piece of music in his life! I think he has gone off the idea.
