Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Endless processions of Jedi and lightsabers were the worst thing about the extended Star Wars universe and prequels. It took something cool and enigmatic and just a little bit awesome and slowly removed all mystery as it flogged it to death.

I think The Force Awakens teaser benefited from the prolonged absence of any new Star Wars elements on the big screen. The Last Jedi uses a lot of similar riffs and callbacks to iconic things we know, and similarly added some interesting tidbits, although nothing quite as attention grabbing as Kylo Ren's lightsaber firing up in the snow.

Quieter hype, but still hyped. Rey wielding a lightsaber while Luke watches on is pretty damn epic.

So make them cool and enigmatic again, but on the up on a way that makes he OT feel like a successful fight.

The Jedi of the prequels were not even close to he worst thing about them. But they suffered from the too many ninjas thing. One ninja can take out an army, but an army of ninjas become fodder.

I was always liked the original animated Clone Wars. The Jedi in that were overpowered, but awesome.

Well I'm excited and Lukes theme gives me goosebumps everytime.

I think cause we've had 2 years of none stop Star Wars films and news people are underwhelmed. If this was the first Star Wars film we were getting in 15 years everyone would be exploding right now

Less is more. Also, the Jedi in Clone Wars were essentially superheroes, which is so far removed from the slightly janky reality and mystery of their power that was shown even by Yoda in the original trilogy that it's like a completely different fanboy friendly "what if" universe in comparison.

Yeah. I'd be quite happy if that were the only trailer. I like the fact that it doesn't tell the entire story in two minutes. No doubt there'll be the inevitable 2 other trailers, teasers for those trailers, TV spots, and a thousand "Easter eggs you missed in the Last Jedi trailer" Youtube videos, complete with red arrows and circles on the video preview images though.

This is IGNs front page right now (also, just discovered my phone can do a scrolling screen capture, which is cool):

Image quality not great, but of the 19 stories on the front page, 16 are related to the last Jedi.

The Jedi of the prequels sucked because of the way they were handled, mostly sitting around talking about stuff.

We just need to see a well represented mystic Jedi Knight/s on a quest that has aesthetic motifs from many star wars eras

Well it worked for me. I watched it with my twelve year old boy and he was excitedly telling me how much he couldn't wait for December, and whilst I was answering him I was struggling like hell to hide the quiver in my voice which the emotion of a new Star Wars trailer always brings to me.

The line at the end... who is that? As it doesnt sound like Luke and clearly what he says is not something you would expect a Jedi to say!

According to most of the trailer analysis I've read, it is him...

I really think Hamill had a point when he said the story had its beginning , middle and end. None of EP VII or this trailer leads me to rethink this.

Story of what? The OT or the new trilogy?

I was less interested in what they were, and more what they were up to.

They seemed to be in a formation abreast rather than racing, and trailing that red smoke.....?

It's not smoke. It's dust from the surface.

Yep, they're in formation and it's the dust from the surface being kicked up. As to what they're up to...

Spoiler

Looks like some kind of AT-AT variant attacking or something to me.

It's Luke. I took it to mean that his new Jedi order won't be called that, maybe will try to aim for the balance referenced in the trailer. At no point did I assume it literally meant no more Jedi, I think it's much more likely to mean "no more creepy celibate space priests" and is there no Luke's new order can be cool without being tainted by the stupid rules, design and story of the shit prequel Jedi.

This analysis video answers all your trailer questions and some you hadn't thought to ask.

It does contain a theory in the title and thumbnail that some might consider a spoiler if it turns out to be true, though, so I've had to put the video in spoiler tags because snowflakes melting over having something spoilt for them by fan theories and speculation when it will end up in later promotional material anyway are not worth the grief on Easter weekend.

The poster is called a teaser poster and it's just that.

Seems pretty clear to me the tri-points of light from the saber are referenced in the old scrolls/books in the trailer. You see the same motif. It appears to be a Jedi Knight thing, right?

I think what has happened with Luke's line is we don't get the next bit...

"It's time for the Jedi to end....Up kicking some Sith ass yo! FIST BUMP REY! BRING IT UP, RIGHT HERE!"

Half-and-half. Using the Dark Side when it benefits for sake of balance? Like ordering half chips and half rice at the Chinese...

It's a shit idea. It was shit in the old EU, it was shit in Rebels (even though they had Tom fucking Baker for the voice of Bendu) and they've a hell of a job to not make it shit here, if that's the way they go.

Seriously tired of prequel whining now too. If it somehow destroyed the entire concept of the Jedi, it basically destroyed Star Wars.
