Star Wars: The Last Jedi

You have to pick a side.

Common consensus is that TLJ derailed the franchise and killed Solo and TROS.

Solo was actually pretty decent, if they renamed it something else and renamed the Han Solo, it would have been a hit.

Im glad Rian Johnson’s career is dead. The dude not only destroyed Starwars but he set back progressive politics a decade and empowered the incel neckbeards

The Last Jedi is good.

Personally? No. I think it's terrible. It and Prometheus are up there are my most disapointing cinema seen films.

Ironically I've watched both numerous times in the hopes I'll come to like them one day but no, they stay infuriating and ridiculous.

Fun fact: also bought the audiobook of TLJ, again, in the hopes I'd find something good in it to like and the bombing run, the first scene/set piece, goes on for HOURS!! And is even drearier than the film. Only time I've ever shouted 'just bomb the effing Star Destroyers' at an audiobook.

I’d be surprised if you felt the need to shout that at any other audiobook to be fair.

It's become the thing I shout at any audiobook that lingers for an eternity on any one scene :)

TLJ. Giving the fans new phrases to shout in annoyance. The Rey fingerclicking clones scene foreshadowed Tiktok too imo ;)

See? Just a big pile of crap ;)

(aspects of TLJ I loved: Crait battle looked amazing, the Holdo manouvre is a beautiful image (but moderately universe shattering), some of the Snoke battle looked good etc. I do wish I liked it, but so much of the script just fails to work for me that it irritates me more than, say, ROS disappointed me. Of the three films I liked Solo way more).

His involvement with Lucasfilm has probably ended (even if his trilogy has not yet been publicly confirmed as cancelled), but that hardly means his career is dead.

At the US domestic box office, Knives Out was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2019 that was not a sequel, remake, or part of an existing franchise. (Behind only Us.) https://m.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/domestic/all-movies/cumulative/released-in-2019

Rian Johnson's career will be fine!

Solo was fine. But I realised I kinda forgot about it after seeing it. It was deflated after the last jedi took a shit on everything and no one was excited for star wars anymore.

Just remember how professional, but how obviously angry Mark Hamill was that Rian shit all over luke, soooo badly. I can ignore some things, but that was a bad choice.

Bits of TLJ I really like:

* Almost all of the Rey/Luke island scenes. The Dark Side cave/mirrors scene bringing some mystery back to the Force. Luke saying out loud what was wrong with the Jedi order.

* The Yoda scene. :wub:

* Rose's introduction scene.

* PORGS

* The way Snoke gets taken out.

* The last shot.

* The Luke duel.

Bits that I get what the aim was, but I don't think completely work:

*  The Poe/Leia/Holdo storyline subverting stories of maverick loners always being the heroes.

* Leia's flight through space. The idea is fine, I think it's just the choice of shots that made it come across as silly to so many people.

Bits that I don't like:

* The casino chase.

* The fact that the film is structured as a very slow pursuit through space, with done characters able to nip off for a side-adventure. (Yeah, the film's critics have a point with that one.)

Bits that I don't like because they were inherited from The Force Awakens, where they were also bad:

* Snoke.

Bits that would have been much more interesting if they'd been done differently:

* If Rey had taken Kylo Ren's offered hand after the throne room right, that would have been a really surprising place to leave Rey before the third film. (Possibly too dark for Disney?)

Bits that I like mostly because of how much they annoyed other people:

* The iron gag.

* Luke saying "laser sword".

* Luke and the blue milk.

* The bombs falling in space.

This is pretty much bang on
