Star Wars: The Last Jedi

We put out a Star Wars channel at work before Christmas, so had all but TLJ on a loop for three weeks... the prequels are atrocious, and got worse each time I saw them. Clones is the nadir, an absolute  toilet of a film.

A new cut of the Last Jedi has been released.

Uploaded to The Pirate Bay yesterday by an anonymous user, the “The Last Jedi: De-Feminized Fanedit” is, according to their own description “basically The Last Jedi minus Girlz Powah and other silly stuff“. You might be wondering how this is possible, seeing as the film is still a ways off from its DVD release date, but the intrepid nerdlinger(s) who decided to make this possible were so impatient for a version of TLJ where boys don’t get old off that they used a dodgy camrip with hardcoded subtitles:

The resulting movie is (wait for it …) 46 minutes long. Yeah I know, it’s not ideal. It’s made from a CAM source (the most recent HDTC one with the Asian hard subs, which is pretty watchable). It has issues. But it had to be done. You will probably enjoy it most when you view it less as a blockbuster movie and more as some kind of episode from some non-existent mediocre Star Wars series.

If you’re wondering what sort of stuff was cut, here are some examples:

“Cut out most shots showing female fighters/pilots and female officers commanding people around/having ideas.“

“NO HALDO (sic)! She simply doesn’t exist. Her whole subplot doesn’t exist. The Kamikaze is carried out by Poe. ( = Poe dies.)“

“Leia never scolds, questions nor demotes Poe. He is a respected and very skilled high-ranking member of the resistance.“

“When there’s a scene where a woman is cut in making some important statement that can be substituted by another statement by a guy, then she gets cut out. Works pretty well actually.“

“Wookie eats the Porg, or at least isn’t interrupted in trying to do so.“

“No green milk.” (What the fuck)

Whichever weirdo threw this together is also not entirely sold on it:

Obviously it’s far from perfect. The source is not even on DVD-level. Some of the technical edits were slacked because why not, it’s a CAM source (e.g. some masks and Snoke disappearing). Sometimes there’s an extreme zoom despite the mediocre quality. There are plotholes and continuity errors and some cuts are not as smooth as they should be, especially audio transition-wise.

But for what it’s worth, it can now at least be viewed without feeling nauseaus about most of the terrible big and small decisions they made in this film. Also, at least the intro sequence is now very watchable and actually much cooler without all of Leia’s nitpicking. Now it’s all one united Resistance fighting without inner conflict and that’s much more satisfying to watch. Due to the extreme shortening, the whole movie is much more fast-paced now, at times unfortuantely also rushed due to a lack of usable filler footage.

Dear God.

Imagine being that sad, pathetic and insecure about your own gender that you'd make or relish such a fan edit. Can only hope, even though deep down I know it's not the case, the original intention was some sort of misplaced satire. That still doesn't excuse anyone who doesn't think the edit should be thrown in the fucking sea.

Finally taking the family to watch this tonight. I've hopefully left it long enough to grant me a near empty showing.

Undiagnosed hyperacusis (by-product of my tinnitus) means I really can't stand crinkly packets, etc. when I'm watching a movie.

A little pissed off I stumbled upon a few mild spoilers on the internet. Haven't read anything but saw a picture showing

Spoiler

the force ghosts of Obi Wan, etc. that included Yoda! So I know he's innit.

I hadn't watched the prequels in years... some time last year, Attack of the Clones was on the telly so I sat and watched it and it's actually WORSE than I remember.

Yeah I would say that Clones is the worst of the prequels due to the turgid first half. Phantom Menace has a lot of problems but it feels a lot more evenly paced.

I think there will be a lot of people out there who are currently in their early 20s who probably really enjoyed them as a first Star Wars experience in the cinema when they were 6 but don't really have a place to discuss them for fear of an army of mid-30s plus comic book guys ridiculing them.

And rightly so. I'll happily no-platform anyone who wants to explore the positives in AOTC.

This is where I link to Phil Sandifer and his hilariously contrarian ranking of the Star Wars series (listed in full at the end of his Force Awakens post). :D

Which brings us to Hayden Christensen. Like Jar Jar Binks, he is a near universally despised aspect of the prequels. This is certainly understandable, but the fact is that he does an excellent job of playing Anakin as the script presents him. It’s just that the script does not so much go for the default of audience suspicion towards Anakin as it does unambiguously making it clear that Anakin is an absolutely terrible person. Indeed, for all that it’s easy to see why Natalie Portman has a career and Hayden Christensen does not, in Attack of the Clones it’s largely Christensen who has the more successful time of it, simply because all he’s asked to do is to play an abusive and manipulative jerk who spouts fascist rhetoric and literally “m’ladies” his way through his efforts at getting into Padme’s pants, whereas Natalie Portman is given the flatly impossible job of convincingly falling in love with someone who is self-evidently human garbage.

On a not entirely unrelated subject, here's what Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill think of that Red Pill fan edit:

I don't want to spend £30 on the Blu-Ray boxset, however, so can anyone tell me where I could watch these, or even just The Phantom Menace, in HD fairly cheaply?

FWIW the first six films are on Amazon digital for £6.99 (I think) at the moment in HD.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VKY7HL0/ref=oh_aui_d_detailpage_o00_?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ended up paying £3.50 as I had some of those no-rush credits or something. No idea!

I'm quite tempted to go and see The Last Jedi again this weekend if only to show that we're not all scared of films with lots of women in leading roles. Plus I really like it.

In fact I might go and see it every weekend it's still on.

Do you mean individually? The entire bundle is showing as £59.99 for me.

Interestingly, for someone who has a small but slightly important role, Joseph Gordon-Levitt only saw the film recently. He's addressed the criticism of Luke's character in this in a good piece on medium:

Recently, I went to see the new Star Wars. I know, I wanted to see it sooner, but I have babies. Anyway, getting home from the cinema, I was curious to see what people were saying about the movie, and what I discovered surprised me. While most critics and many fans loved it as much as I did, there was also a passionate contingent who decidedly didn’t.

I was intrigued. A lot of my favorite movies polarize audiences. Many, many voices had much to say, and I only got through reading a tiny speck of it, but right away, I noticed a recurring theme in the various objections. In fact, I noticed a number of recurring themes, and I’m tempted to write down my thoughts about several of them. But in the interest of brevity (and the likelihood that I actually manage to finish writing this), I’ll limit myself to this one:

What happened to Luke Skywalker?

More at the link of course!

That's a really good article. I like the big where he contrasts how we find Luke in TLJ compared to Han on TFA. Not only does Han not seem to have changed over the last 30 years, he's actually regressed to how he was at the beginning of A New Hope! I actually imagined Han ending up similar to how Luke actually turned out. Jaded, bedraggled and grumpy. Probably because that's all Harrison Ford seems to do since the 90s.

Well me and one of my boys have decided to do a back to back special on Sunday, so we're watching the Force Awakens DVD from lunchtime then going to see the Last Jedi at 4.30.

I was a bit surprised that there's only one showing per day at my local cinema this weekend, but then again it has been out over a month now so there can't be many people left going to see it besides saddoes superfans like me.

Jesse Thorn interviewed Rian Johnson on the latest episode of Bullseye. They're friends so don't expect hard hitting quetions but there is some interesting discussion about the place for comedy in Star Wars and some talk about decisions made, especially about Rey's parentage.

It's spoiler filled so be warned. Also it's at the front of the podcast, no need to jump halfway through.
