I recently went on a full on Lord of the Rings Extended Edition marathon over the Xmas holidays. Something that was - annoyingly - in the back of my mind while watching it, was that if these films were released now-a-days, they just would not survive the pedantic-flaw-nit-picking-police.

They'd be unfairly torn to shreds for the tiniest things that didn't matter while the over-all themes of the film were completely missed.

Themes are great, but execution matters. Lots of people get the themes of the film but just don't like how it's done.

Films still get passes. Most Marvel films aren't derailed by nitpicks - they are discussed but it doesn't lead straight into a hate fest. Blade Runner 2049 has plenty of flaws, but it got critical acclaim and those who actually watched it tended to love it.

I get why TLJ is loved by some people but much of the TLJ criticism is fair... from a certain point of view at least.

If that's the 1987 film you're referring to then, yes! It's an absolute masterpiece.

The finest film Orson Wells was ever involved in.

No.  I don't mean that.  I mean the 1986 film.

Which film do I mean?

Lol I love that bit, when Palpatine goes Mmmm and thats the end of the scene. I saw this recently and said aloud 'what'

The end of the scene is the next shot where Jar Jar is thinking about what they said. Obviously believing every word.

Edit: never mind. Already said above.

I’ve no idea what’s happening, but the last page of this thread is better than at least 20 pages of the TLJ script.

Of course someone who doesn't understand Citizen Kane banter would say that. Total pleb.

Oh come on, this is much better than people just posting "mcbain".  Or are you worried this well set a dangerous president? :coffee:

I'm just concerned this thread might turn out to be a bit of a damp squid.

Spoiler

I don't know how many on here are aware of the work of Andrew Ellard, but he's a Script Editor for Graham Linehan and several other comedies and happens to be a bit of a genius when it comes to story structure. He's well worth a follow on twitter, and his script notes on The Last Jedi are well worth a read.

I loved this movie and Andrew Ellard's points highlight a lot of what made it fresh, daring and eminently re-watchable to me. But comparing it to Quantum of Solace... Huh? The most humourless, po-faced and leaden Bond movie of all time. Each to his own.

I don’t really need a genius of story structure to tell me that they deliberately took people’s expectations and flipped them. I think that was pretty obvious from just watching the film.

Personally, I think they went too far. I could understand them twisting one or two things to create a bit of shock, but to purposely throw away everything that TFA was building felt more like the director trying to put his stamp on things, rather than it being wonderful, deliberate storytelling. It felt pretty heavy-handed to me and lacked the careful measure of drama, thrills and wit that he saw.

I’m not totally down on the film, as I thought there were some amazing bits in there, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. I’m looking forward to watching it again when it comes to Blu-ray though, and hopefully I’ll appreciate it a bit more now I know what to expect.

Yay, at last someone other than me links to Andrew Ellard's writing! :D

Oh, he's been defending Quantum of Solace ever since its release. Here's the review he wrote when it came out, and here he is gushing about it with Al Murray a few months ago.

Slight derail, but my opinion on QoS has completely flipped since I first watched it and hated it. It's a flawed film, but it does a hell of a lot right - the super-quick editing works much better on TV than it does on a cinema screen, the brutal, cynical tone for Bond works well with elements like the slick, corporate baddies and the corrupt CIA agents, and there are some absolutely brilliant character moments. Even the song has grown on me.

You nearly had me going until the bit about the song. Well played.
