And yeah, the USB they give you is too short to actually make use of that and couldn't look any cheaper if they tried. The Xbox Elite Controller comes with a 3m braided USB cable that's a work of art. You almost feel bad using that pad wirelessly, and want to show it off when guests come over the house. Now that - that's a USB cable.

For context, that would be the controller that's 1/3 the price of the Pro.

Sony have some third party licensed controllers they'd like you to buy for 50% more than the Elite pad.

And if people would like to compare those to the Elite controller I won't ding them for false equivalence.

Personally I think both the licensed controllers look like over-priced rubbish.

So I've plugged the Pro into a 4K Sony Bravia HDR TV and it's saying only 2K is supported. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Have you got the input on tv set to 4k? Early sony Bravias only have one port that supports 4k and sometimes need to be turend on!

I'm trying to sort that out now. The TV remote has been synched to the PS4 though, so everytime I select options it simply selects it on the PS4 instead.

Do the fans really kick up quite high when playing the Titanfall 2 campaign for everyone else? I've been pretty surprised how loud they get after a 10 minutes of playing.

My Pro is genuinely silent (or as good as) I've played it for hours with 2D and VR games and noticed no increase in noise whatsoever. To clarify that's at 1080 though.

You need more NITS

Sony were demoing their material using their flagship LCD TV, which can push out well in excess of the UHD Premium spec. If you listen to any of the discussion from Richard Leadbetter and co, their chosen 4K HDR TV, a Panasonic which doesn't meet the UHD Premium spec doesn't have the same impact as what Richard Leadbetter was so impressed by at the reveal.

If people want to experience HDR as intended, don't go in expecting a non-Premium spec matching TV to deliver an amazing HDR experience, you're going to need at least 1000 nits of brightness to get something worthy of praise (unless you own an OLED). The problem being that the HDR spec has no minimum brightness requirement so all TVs can call themselves HDR if they understand the metadata being sent.

Quoted for being very wise words, anyone shopping around should take this very seriously. We'll be getting quite a lot of crap HDR 4k panels being bought in specially by companies ready to offload on "black friday"...don't be fooled.

My Sonia Bravia is HDR compatible apparently, which means it can accept the signals but won't be to the same standard. I'm hoping this will still be better than the non-HDR alternative. I'm going to get a Pro as I'm fed up with having had my 4K TV for so long and not having anything have decent to use on it.

Avoid - these LG's are being heavily reduced for a reason (they aren't great)

If you want a really decent HDR/4k gaming experience, the Samsung KS7000 is the cheapest good experience you can get:

Very low input lag even with HDR on

Meeting Ultra HD Premium Standards (Look for this certificate on a TV if you want to be sure it is capable of providing a good HDR experience)

Has a VA panel (ie not IPS which would lead to shitty black levels)

Reasonably priced given the picture - you can get the 55inch with 5 year guarantee from a number of places for less than £1k

If your budget isn't quite there - save up or don't buy

Currys £899

Extra 100 quid for 55"

quite fancy the curved myself, dont like the stands on those...theyre not rotatable stands, just 2 little legs either side of the panel. Too pricey to justify though, and prices will plummet after xmas, and then again in spring.

Currys, John Lewis and Richer Sounds all have the same prices for the 49/55 inch models (899/999). Currys currently have 5% cashback via quidco on tv's over 50 inch. Richer Sounds do 6 year guarantee - John Lewis and Currys do 5 years.

Richer Sounds price match up to 7 days after purchase - same with Currys - so the earliest you should buy is this weekend so you can price match any black friday deals coming up. John Lewis price match up to 28 days. Make sure you are aware of all the price match criteria and small print (Eg John Lewis wouldn't price match Amazon if they had a lightning black friday deal turn up or something)

(You can probably tell I've been looking into this!)

I was wrong about the HDR switcher. I thought it was working fine but after sitting down to fully test it tonight it's clear I need a splitter. I'm an imbecile and have removed the posts full of bad advice. Apologies to the couple of people that acknowledged my updates.

Thanks - I'm not in any hurry and don't even have a 4k source yet. I think I might wait for Scorpio next year then go balls deep in an OLED.

The Pro version of BF1 seems to be very good in multiplayer:

Quote

We acquired a second copy of the game and played PS4 Pro and PS4 side-by-side in the same session, with players locked into the same squad, one closely following the other. This more closely equalises GPU load, while CPU stresses should be very similar - CPU tasks such as physics and behind-the-scenes processing of player movements should be close to identical as both consoles are running in the same game instance, computing the same action.

Based across an assessment of the run of play, PlayStation 4 Pro offers up a 10-15fps advantage - a lead which seems fairly consistent regardless of how low the standard PS4 drops, so for example, a 32fps minimum reports as 47fps at the same point on Pro - a 47 per cent increase in performance (accepting some margin of error, bearing in mind that the rendering is not entirely like for like). Also interesting is more consistency in frame-times for Pro owners. Battlefield 1 is v-synced, meaning that the target frame-time is 16.7ms - 60 frames per second. However, performance drops can see 33ms or even 50ms frame-times on standard PS4 hardware - in our tests, the Pro never exceeds 33ms. In the heat of the action, PS4 Pro offers more visual feedback and crisper response, though clearly a locked 60fps is still off the table in demanding scenes.

Yeah, couldn't see how the switch would work.

Now do I try the splitter?  I'm sure it's work but these things are finicky and there is also chance it could introduce a smidge of lag.

I just tried TF2 again for an hour and the fans went crazy still, it's got plenty of ventilation space so i don't think thats the issue. I'm tempted to send it back to Amazon for a replacement.
