EA Games will / wont support Live

Battlefield on Xbox, what does it need to be a hit? Simple answer - Live. A online multiplayer shooting game must be played online, with and against other people. Knowing EA's policy I highly doubt that Battlefield will be released on Xbox. Think about it, what's the use of a online game that cannot be played online?

Oh sure, EA can add a huge single player storyline, but hey... who is waiting for that. If people want to shoot stuff and be part of a storyline, they play Halo. Or any first person Bond game.

I know that in this country 25% of Xbox owners are Live enabled.

For me at least a Live option does tip the scales in favour of buying a game.

Where did you get that figure from?

MS own figures realsed this week put total xbox sales at 14million and total live subscription at 750,000.

That's 5% - Nowhere near 25%. Worldwide. I cant imagine the UK being at the forefront of Live gaming.

I think he (or where ever he read it) took that 25% from a press release that said...

"A recently released survey by Zelos Group finds that more than 25 percent of owners of Xbox® are likely to go online this holiday season, compared to just under 15 percent of PS2 owners."

Load of bullshit then....

Aside: It is still a blatant red herring that a 'difficult user experience' (e.g. PS Online Play) is a serious problem. Virtually all online games on PC are (to a greater or lesser extent) a spectacular pain in the arse to get running, it hasn't stopped a number of them from having user bases in the millions.

Are you seriously trying to suggest that a "difficult user experience" on a console stuck under your telly is equivalent to a "difficult user experience" on a PC?

And that the huge variety of things that can go wrong on a PC should have any bearing on what an online console title should achieve?

{ Auditor - I salute your utterly consistent anti-microsoft stance: now put some glasses on... }

Not quite sure what you mean. Of course, ideally all online stuff would be as easy as Live, just pointing out that it's not a deal clincher.

Anti-MS? Whatever...

Why not? Configuring a router, assign IP addresses, cloning a MAC address, changing DHCP, etc... all the norm, now a user has Xbox Live.

And that the huge variety of things that can go wrong on a PC should have any bearing on what an online console title should achieve?

This has no relevance to playing online, other than it not working.

I couldn't careless if EA support live or not. Clearly, it isn't all that it has cracked up to be and EA have the business sense not to waste their time, unless some incentive is involved.

He said that a quarter of Xbox gamers in the UK switched to broadband just to play online.

Quarter = 25%

Clearly, it is.

I think maybe you misunderstood, because I didn't explain myself :P What I meant was, regardless of the quality of games, there should be more games on the system if it was everything it claimed to be, allowing EA to not only do what they want to do, but other developers too. That's going off information in this thread, if all true.

God, no! There're too many as it is! I feel... 'compelled' to buy the ones that people on my friendlist are playing... even if I don't really want it!

And now no-one comes to play Midtown Madness anymore 'cos they're all on bloody Project Boring Racing.

Dullards. :P

The wording of this makes me think that the figure is not anywhere near a quater, just that 25% of Xbox owners *have* broadband.

Aye, Sprite Machine, I know what you mean. I don't buy into it now though, 'cos in the end I know I'm going to go off "the game" and only play breifly 'cos of peer pressure. Rainbow 6, not my thing, PGR2, dull dull dull and several others. I only have a couple of Live games now and that'll do like, 'cos I actually played them properly :P

I like MM3 though too, shame it is hard to get a decent game going 'cos everyone wants to glitch all the time :P

I expect Tekki Live will be ace though, but guarenteed that nobody will be playing the bloody thing!

oops, a bit OT there :)

Uh, all that says is that 25% of xbox owwners that have an internet connection, have switched over to BB for the purposes of gaming. It doesn;t say anything about live. MS own figured put worldwide live subscription at 750,000. If you take the total Xbox sales in the UK at around 2 million, then that would mean a live sign up of 500,000 (if it were indeed 25% of UK xbox owners) Meaning the UK would amount to 75% of the world uptake on Live.

In summary - not a chance. 5% is the live take up figure worldwide, and you would expect the UK to be somewhere around that figure, if not below it.

How would M$ know that?

The only figures that could have used would surely be -

Number of Xboxes sold in the UK,

Number of Live kits sold in the UK.

They can't possibly know -

Number of Xbox owners who have got BB since getting an Xbox for non Live online gaming.

If that's the case then they are lying when they say that Xbox owners are going broadband specifically for Live or any other gaming service for that matter.

How can you tell if someone has switched to broadband just now by the sales of Live kits?

maybe they asked NTL how many suckers spent another 5 quid a month for an extra IP address when signing up.

Taken from the-magicbox

In the financial report, Microsoft announced the worldwide shipment of Xbox has reached 13.7 million units, 8.6 millions in North America, 3.7 millions in Europe and 1.4 million in Japan. The number of Xbox Live subscribers has also reached 750,000.
