Seems reasonably fair, given we usually get the cinematic releases earlier.

Yeah, considering we get the films in the cinema first its not the worst thing to have to wait an extra week for home release.

And it's only a week.

I take issue with a global company that can't get its shit together on physical releases and then moans about piracy. Just saying

Apparently theyre relasing the unedited versions of the OT.

I thought they'd do this now Disney is in control, it's easy money and they've been doing 'fan-service' for ages now. May as well do this.

Also I think a day will come with theres like an Avengers * Star Wars crossover in film (or something of equal absurdity). Thats the epitome of what this shared-universe is doing, everything will be in everything.

Source?!

I think this was a rumour that got out of hand a few days ago.

We’ve essentially confirmed that Disney’s current 4K scan of the film is the most recent revised version (essentially the latest “special edition”), not the original theatrical edition. What’s more, Disney’s director of Library Restoration and Preservation, Theo Gluck, held a special event at Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts last night, a presentation called Animation Restoration at Walt Disney Studios. Gluck was asked there about Star Wars and reported that the original cut negative for the film currently exists in its “SE” configuration only. (There’s more info, so do continue on past the jump.)

In addition, 20th Century Fox’s Senior Vice President of Library and Technical Services, Shawn Belston, was also on hand at the Wexner event last night. He confirmed that all of the “trims” removed from the original cut negative (in the mid-1990s, to create the SEs) still exist as well. (Thanks to Bits reader Chuck P., who attended this event, for his firsthand report.) So what does all that mean to you?

In summary: While it is essentially technically true that the ‘77 cut negative “no longer exists” in its original state, it is also technically true that it could be re-built if so desired. All of the needed film elements still survive and have been preserved. Nevertheless, if one takes Gluck and Belston at their word (and knowing them as we do, we certainly do) this would seem to be fairly official word that no such reconstruction work has been done to date. Thus, it appears that there is little chance of the original 1977 Star Wars being released on any home video format in 2017.

Oh, I just heard a rumour, didn't know the full details or a source.

How does the original no longer exist? What happened to it?

I think the basic story is that LucasFilm has confiscated most of the original prints, apart from a very small few in private collections.

The best you can get to the original experience are Harmy's Despecialized Editions (cleaned-up version of the theatrical release) and the Team Negative 1 Silver Screen edition (warts-and-all experience).

You say LucasFilm "confiscated" them? So if the team has them, surely they could alter and release them? Still a bit hazy.

I think it will eventually come, I'm sure Disney execs are already planning to release this around Ep 9 to build mongo hype

So I've read that and yes, a deal would have to be made between Fox and Disney and maybe Lucas would have some say, but heres the one thing -

Theres so much money to be made (somehow, im not a business exec) by doing this, and it's becoming more increasingly known that people want this. Maybe when Star Wars is at an all time low, maybe a spin-off film gets major hate, they will find someway to release the "originals". That site says one version was released as a DVD extra (even if its bad resolution/aspect ratio), a publicly available version still exists it seems?

It's money waiting to be cashed, and it's gunnaaa happen sometime in the next 5 years.

I take issue with anybody that uses a one week delay to try and justify piracy.

I'm not condoning piracy. Release it in the USA a week before anywhere and rips will be online the same day. of which thousands will be downloading it.

(I can see an argument that a lot would still do it anyway regardless. But statistically they would be some that wouldn't bother and just buy a copy instead.)
