Excellent issue. It's great to see the Lynx in Minority Report and some love for Battlezone 2000, Gordo and Battlewheels....but Dirty Larry? It's a diabolical game!

You really ought to get one again and have it screen modded, Strider.

I nearly caved and bought one while I was writing it but I had my previous one for two years without touching it. I just can't justify it (although that modded screen is tempting...)

It's an unsung gem of a system. The library of games is ridiculously strong.

Also, I take umbrage with your labelling Kung Food a stinker, you philistine! It's a decent scrolling fighter, although it gets too difficult at stage 3 or 4. I forget. The one with the jacket spuds.  It's ten times better than Larry.  Pfffffft.

To be honest, by the time I got to Larry I was running out of good games.
I didn't want to include arcade stuff, so once they're all out the way there choices become a lot smaller.

This was another cracking issue. The magazine is seemingly firing on all cylinders now - every month is bloody great.

Have to agree, i've always enjoyed Retro Gamer but it seems basically perfect now. Partially because for me it covers the golden era of gaming but also because it has in depth articles covering a wide range of topics from indepth system looks to what each controller on a console is like. Really takes me back to the days of N64 Magazine, SSM and DC-UK where its filled with bright colours, passion and joy.

I've subscribed to 'Retro', the US magazine following its Kickstarter and subsequent general release.  It's just not very good though.  I won't be renewing that's for sure.  Now, Retro Gamer on the hand is absolutely bang on.  I read it cover to cover every month.  Love it!  Keep it just as it is.

Cheers...

Haha! I just saw that not ten minutes ago as I was flicking through the mag over breakfast. Amazing scenes.

Edit - I'm going to order a pair for the wife.

Pretty much everything. I still don't like the homebrew section - I don't really get why people create endless generic platformers/shooters for ancient platforms - but the rest is pretty golden. The NES feature this month was a big surprise, and it's rather excellent.

It's the retro magazine I've always wanted, in its current form.

Well we are outselling edge, Gamestm, games master and play at the moment, so we must be doing something right.

Seriously? And to think when it was launched I didn't think it would last six months.

EDIT: out of interest do you get a lot of foreign sales?

In terms of physical sales. I know edge had a decent online position, probably because of all the awesome covers.

we do pretty well with foreign sales, but Rg is also licensed out (although they don't always look as nice).

GamesTM has gone proper downhill in recent years. I was subscribing for so many issues but cancelled awhile back, shame as I really used to enjoy it with the mix of modern and Retro worked really well.

Are you allowed to say sales numbers?

No we don't generally give out that information I'm afraid. Interestingly, our Wipeout and Quake covers haven't done as well as Mega Cd, Street Fighter or 150 so it might be a little too early to push more modern retro. 16-bit seems to be the sweet spot at the moment (8-bit home computer covers generally don't do well like they once did).

Well to be fair, I can't see many other gaming magazines celebrating the NES :)
