Any reason why my psp-1000s battery has swelled again? I replaced it earlier in the year, admitedly with a cheap one off eBay, as the official one that had been in it for years had swelled and the battery cover would no longer clip on properly. Anyway, the "new" one is in the same state. I'm assuming a slim battery would be no good?

Got a charger from amazon this evening after my charity shop find.

Sadly i get no lights what so ever on my PSP 1003 with or without the battery installed.

Is it really worth me trying to replace the charging port if i can find one on ebay?

Looks simple enough from the one decent video on YouTube.

I don't believe it's the battery as according to the internet i should get power and a green light from the psp when the mains' charger is plugged in with the battery removed.

Any ideas people?

Plug the charger into the PSP then hold down the L shoulder button whilst pushing the power button, hold the L button for about 30 seconds. I think that happened to my white one when I hadn't used it for a long time and that's how I got it to switch on again.

Nah, nothing :(

I am watching a video of a guy repairing one, and he's saying that inside the charging port the copper strip (not the pin) is too flush and not griping the charger correctly.

Will mine is flush to the side of the charging port :/

It's VERY easy to swap out, might be worth getting the power switch at the same time, I've had those fail on me a fair few times.

If you know anyone local with a psp, get it checked with a known working battery first though, don't want to go swapping it out only to find the screen or UMD drive has gone, but mostly psp's are pretty modular, so you can replace practically everything on them.

How crazy futuristic was the PSP when it first dropped? It literally looked like advanced technology as it was so Sony all round in terms of aesthetics, especially when compared to what the DS looked like at the time which made it look even more slick. Then they released the white one, hnngh!

In true Sony style they made the fact that the button presses impact on the screen a "feature" and not a defect and the LOLworthy lack of security on the initial firmwares made it a pirates paradise but it still is such an impressive machine, especially for racers as having a portable Outrun 2 machine in your pocket that plays so well was amazing as were the Wipeouts etc...

Interestingly enough there is talk that the Vita will be able to play PSP games in native resolution soon which will be absolutely amazing as it took a lot of what made the original great and improved it for the 5 people that actually bought one.

What is everyones favourite iteration? Mine has to be the Go as its just so portable and that slightly smaller screen makes everything look crisp even though its nub is nigh on unusable.

I've never had a go but the lack of UMD drive with what I've collected for the system so far (up to 50 games now) would be a killer

i have a white 1000 that I bought when MGS Portable Ops came out which has CFW installed, then because it's umd drive is a bit dodgy nowdays I bought a black 2000. I like the shape of the 2000 more than the 1000 but it feels so much cheaper in your hands. So instead I have the best of both worlds, my UMD games are all played on the 2000 whilst I use my 1000 for emulation.

I bought a Jp 1000 when they first came out and later I bought a 2000 as I hate the d-pad on the 1000 so it never gets used. The 2000 is on CFW, but a fairly old version that I'm loathe to update in case it breaks compatibility with anything I've got on there. And I've got tons on there.

Plan was to buy another 2000 that I can have at the latest OFW so I can throw any UMD in there but I never got round to doing that.

Love the PSP, it's had so much use over the years it's unreal. My Vita gets similar love. Such great machines.

Someone at work asked me it I knew why he is getting corrupt data on a 64gb card. Is there a card size limit or has he just formatted it wrong? I dug mine out last night to check but only run an 8gb card and it's fine so I couldn't be much help.

BTW - the ebay cheapo replacement battery I got 3 years ago to replace the original has also swelled up. Good that you can plug in the mains lead and play without a battery although that just makes it a PSP. Does anyone know why the batteries fail like that? The rechargeable battery in a 15year old Sony camera is just fine, it seems to be a particular PSP issue.

I've just started Tactics Ogre.

Holy fuck, it's dense.

I thought I'd be able to walk in and it would play exactly like Final Fantasy Tactics but it's really its own game (or FFT was its own game, seeing as this came first). It's easy to forget how steep the learning curve for FFT was after 200+ hours spread over multiple playthroughs. This is like having all of that erased from your memory and starting again from scratch.

Possible he got a fake, particularly if he bought it off ebay?

I've never owned a 3000E series PSP so cannot compare but I think the 2000 series is my favourite model. I was lucky enough to pick up a Go from Comet for £50 when they were on clearance and have it attached to my US account and while it is great for slow moving games like RPGs the small size makes action games like Daxter and GTA difficult to play. Gran Turismo Portable is also completely unplayable on it. The Start and Select buttons are ridiculously small as well.

If you are looking for an SRPG that isn't 100s of hours long I recommend finding a copy of Jeanne d'Arc. One of the best games on the system that was never released in the UK.

Mega bump time.

I just found my PSP 3000 whilst having a clear out and was instantly dismayed to find a dead pixel. It wasn't a dead pixel, but dirt under the screen and it's now been removed by my cousin over the weekend.

This has led to me playing the likes of Loco Roco, God Of War: Ghost Of Sparda and Ultimate Ghouls N Ghosts and now I've got the bug again.

I've got a fairly modest collection of around 35 games, but I'm looking to expand it, because of course I am :P

Check out Brandish: The Dark Revenant, the PSP remake of the original Brandish (still available as a download via the PSP itself, just about). It's a really good action-DRPG hybrid which rewards thorough exploration of the dungeon floors, and it has a great soundtrack. Goku Makaimura Kai is a nice revision of UGnG, which removes the key- and ring-hunting elements to streamline the game back into an arcadey experience. I love the original Dariusburst, even if it has been massively superseded by ACEX and Chronicle Saviours, and you can't go wrong with the two Ridge Racer games.

Edit: Dracula X Chronicles is great for what it is, too. I can't imagine anyone preferring it over the original Rondo, but it's amazing it exists at all and it's a very loving and thoughtful remake. Also, while I don't personally like playing them on a small screen, all of the Konami shmup collections (Gradius, Salamander, Twinbee and Parodius) are excellent.

Great system. I still have the fat system you sold me in 2006, along with the super sweet slim I upgraded to in 2008. Sometimes I like to place the two of them in cardboard dioramas as if they're two actors living a virtual life.

Anyway, you want to get it softmodded, get the biggest memory card you can find, rip all those dirty UMDs, and go pure digital.

It also doubles as a super great Game Boy and Game Gear emulator, so you can enjoy handheld emulation, on a handheld.

Can I just say how nice (if a little pared back) the PSP version of gran turismo is?

I would have sworn it was the ps2 version if not for the lack of options.

I discovered it on my pandora3d+ one of those little jamma emulation boxes with thousands of other ROMs. It does a sideline in PSP emulation.
