If MS have gone with a substantially more powerful CPU in Scorpio I presume it'll be to support VR and higher frame-rates in the short-term, whilst allowing Scorpio to become the base model for the next gen.

Agreed. Potentially messy strategy though.

It doesn't mean trouble. It's just a largely redundant and expensive addition, on the assumption MS want to maintain compatibility with the Xbone.

I'm sure it'll have the same CPU but cost of getting the next CPU up can't be that big I'd have thought.  Especially if the factories that make the original CPU's are getting ready to tool up for smaller more power efficient chips going forward.  Might make sense to move along with them.

PC's can play games from 10 years ago fairly easily. With vastly different CPU's. If the console manufacturers are sticking with the same CPU then I'd imagine  it's purely down to cost rather than any possible technical problems they foresee.

Again, it's not a compatibility issue. To your first paragraph, CPU's are generally quite expensive and consoles are very price sensitive.

But why though?  PC do this all the time.  Games run on a wide range of CPU's just fine.  What makes consoles different?

And again, it's not a compatibility issue - it's how you get consumers on board. I can't imagine existing Xbone owners are going to be too thrilled at the prospect of their hardware not being able to play new Xbox titles after potentially only five years or so.

all of these halfway house consoles are a messy strategy mainly because it is first time it has been tried.

Agree that's potentially messy too - but not really the first time it's been tried. Nintendo have been at it a while, Game Boy Colour, N64 expansion packs, even the 3DS. Arguably Sega too but then that didn't work out too well for them.

No interest in PSVR for the time being and I bought a new tv just last year (just before 4k sets became affordable and interesting, but I was forced to since my old set broke), so for me it would mostly be for boost mode. That alone isn't worth it imo, the difference just isn't that impressive to me. It's like having a 970 and being presented with a 980 - not really worth it for that kind of money. I'd rather spend my money on a Switch and maybe a Scorpio, assuming that going from a vanilla One to a Scorpio is more like going from a 970 to 1080. You know what I'm saying?

Yea I understand. I just want one now for boost mode for BF4 and for the newer games that are patched to run better. I do want a PSVR sometime and would want the full experience, plus no doubt I'll want a 4K tv once the Scorpio is out too. I already have a Switch, I say get one of them for now!

Well the n64 expansion pak and the "new" 3ds were either a clusterfuck or ignored, both were horrible strategies and messy as you say. I know you will point to n64 expansion pak and say it wasnt that bad but just go check what games used it , it was fairy irrelevant.

GB colour sort of worked I guess but again not exactly embraced.

I think in this case of PS4 and Xbox one it depends on 2 factors

1) Are they sticking to x86 i.e. this upgrade every 2-3 years instead of a NEXTGEN

2) Will it be iOS-like so that alot of stuff scales back or can scale

PCs can scale hugely and there is no reason consoles can't either. If the Xbox One and PS4 strategy turns out to be an "elite upgrade" for the rich kids and in 3 years they'll release a new gen incompatible with any PS4 Xbox One games then that will be a mistake, I was annoyed enough at losing my 360 library when next gen happened, if it happens again that might be the final straw.

Mega hype or super disappointment? Find out here tomorrow on Scorpio Tales.

Both. Just depends whether you define yourself as a Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo fanboy

Sweet jeebus, if I can't take my PS4 or Xbox One library forward I'll finally jump ship to PC.

Yeah true. I'm actually quite concerned for the Scorpio. It sounds powerful, but Microsoft seem to have forgotten to make any first party games for a while now, all the time while the likes of Horizon are strutting around. The machine might be great but they need to ramp up the games.

I'm interested in watching the DF presentation/reveal tomorrow but I'm most certainly out. That's rather usual for myself, a rabid video game nerd who wants all the best hardware as soon as possible, yet it feels that what MS are offer is so slight and of so little interest. I upgraded my original Xbox One for the much, much nicer and compact S and kinda just gonna call it a day there. It'll suffice for playing the odd old 360 game now upgraded or a new Halo, or Gears whenever they come out, but for me Microsoft have been completely off the boil with the Xbox division this entire decade, offering very little of interest when considering stuff I can't get from the competitors machine. The Kinect focus from 2010 - 2015 along with the culling of their first party game development has just left a really confusing entertainment platform with not much entertainment of interest.

I'm definitely not in for day1 unless Fifa has some huge upgrade over the PS4 Pro, that's the only thing that will tempt me.

Ill get a Scorpio when I decide to replace my Xbox One day one edition, but I'll be waiting for a price drop I've got little doubt about that.

Quite fun how territorial a certain fellow is over this, as if we're all crawling back to the xbox, cap in hand. We're just videogame fans, we go where the games are.

Personally I think the gaming landscape has changed hugely this generation. With streaming/internet videos and mobile gaming/casual gaming I feel like AAA games have moved into 2nd or 3rd place in terms of people's priorities.

This Scorpio thing kinda doesn't matter now we are well and truly in the realm of diminishing returns with technology.

I kinda feel like development tools have reached their limits, I can see a game and see all the switches/trigger points going off in the background. The only things that save a game for me these days is the acting, story and style. You don't need better tech for that really, it can be done anywhere on anything. We need next generation development and direction rather than technology.

Maybe it's just me only seeing the copycat money chasing side of the industry....

I've yet to buy a PS4. The exclusive catalogue to date is too hindered by mediocrity and Japanese titles that I've little interest in and I'd rather discover the greatness of at a much later date and lower cost. Until it gets GT and Wipeout and they're not shit I'll be putting my dosh on a Scorpio with Turn 10's first uncompromised by power Forza title. Which we might get a glimpse of tomorrow....
