There mid generation refreshes leave the manufacturers acting like Ross in that episode of friends where Rachel's dad comes round while Mona is there. Desperately trying to placate two people but angering the opposite one whenever he speaks to each of them.

Re: TLG

They could never get to run TLG on the PS3 in the first place.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-06-17-ps3-last-guardian-trailer-was-specced-up-for-the-occasion

So having it in 30 fps /1080p on the Pro (a night and day difference to the 4K and OG PS4 versions according to DF) is a great thing, as it's a rather lovely game too.

So Scorpio E3 predictions? I don't think MS can magically conjure up new software, their studios are limited and we pretty much know what's in production (new Forza, Halo, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves, Ori 2). The one game we do not know about is Playdead's new IP, but it might be too early for anything besides a CGI announcement trailer. So they'll probably have a couple of really big third party games running, with all bells and whistles on. I said it before, but MS should try and get CDPR to reveal Cyberpunk 2077 on their stage. Read Dead 2 would be another big one, but Sony has the marketing deal for that one.

Nah I cant agree there, it had a trouble time but it was never ever properly running past 10fps on the ps3. I'm excited for scorpio and I love my pro.

@Rubber_Johnny is right though, it's an example of what people feared might happen with the Pro - games being released in an unoptimised state on the base hardware, brute forced into more acceptable performance on the more powerful hardware. Luckily it's an exception rather than the rule.

TLG hammers the machine, it would have always come out with frame drops. Luckily we get a brute forced solution of a double GPU machine with faster clock. Really, the pro is a great machine, I don't fall into the camp of having to hate one to like another.

Yeah, not so good for those of us happy with the base hardware though. The Last Guardian was released in an unacceptable state imo. I'm still enjoying it, but Sony saying, hey just spend another £350 and it'll run OK really doesn't sell me on the Pro. But like I said, most games aren't like that.

So just to recap the thread, some people would prefer that extra power in a new unit was used for things other than graphics and are sad that it can't be because it's got pretty much the same CPU as the Bone. Other people are phyched about actually standing a chance of getting 60fps out of a console for the first time ever, and are excited to play similar games to now with smoother performance. These two groups of people are completely incapable of understanding each other but will use confusing car and PC gaming analogies to try to make their point.

@Stanley Really? I read a lot of people saying they barely had any drops..I dont know Ive not played it on a base machine. Plus it wasnt an outright 350, you could get it half price with the trade in, with a lovely new pad and refreshing of your consumer rights.

Me neither, reckon we'll have to though.

Aye. I bet Halo 5 will get a graphics upgrade in the meantime. As much as I love to play Arena, it does look rough sometimes and could do with better textures and antialiasing.

Overall im pleased with the news.  Im in the Microsoft ecosystem, my friends are there and im building a digital library this generation.  I have an S and hopefully a 4K tv this year.  I could see myself getting one in 2018 for sure.  I do want a focus on new / additional games from MS as their main titles leave me a bit bored.

It's still playable but very choppy at times, coupled with the laggy controls it gives an overall rough performance.

I chose a PS4 Slim for price and form factor. It's a lovely little machine and I'm happy with its performance (more than happy in the case of Horizon) 99% of the time.

I did consider a Pro but tbh I knew Scorpio would absolutely trounce it so I decided to wait for one of those instead.

Does anyone know how it will affect games with set resolutions? I know it'll be good for Xbox One games with dynamic resolutions, but with games like Battlefield 4 which is set at 720p, will the Scorpio allow it to render at a higher resolution?

And anything that is more than 10 feet away keeping the 60fps animations.

apparently no

There are many games out there that support dynamic scaling - Doom 2016, Halo 5, Gears of War 4, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and The Division, for example.

"With the additional performance of the Scorpio Engine, we expect to see those titles hit the maximum render resolution that those titles support," says Goossen. "As you know, we can't boost it to 4K, but definitely the maximum resolution the game supports, we should be able to run it."

Yes, the idea is to get them all running at 4K.

They will run at full speed, but the same resolution (Although I assume they will upscale to 4k on a 4k screen?). So BF4 will get solid 60fps, added antialiasing & no screen tearing, but will need a patch to get a res bump.

Even if MS announce nothing, this will have unbelievably sexy versions of RDR2 and Destiny 2 running at 60fps right?

Hopefully Destiny 2 will be shooting for 60fps on base hardware anyway.

Initially I felt a bit like this wasn't interesting because I already have a PS4. Listing all those current games I already have and saying they'd run a bit better didn't do it for me.

Now though, I'm picturing DF breaking down a new game, seeing the peasant level Bone/S versions and PS4/Slim versions next to the sexy Scorpio and PC versions.

Maybe I could convince people I know to get one so I can play online with them.

Last Guardian side talk: game runs fine on PS4 with the console set to 720p. Which is how I play everything due to the resolution of my TV.

Right, back to Scorpio talk - I think that it's obvious that Microsoft have created a console which is clearly overpowered for the task at hand: creating 4K content but rather cleverly I don't see them boxing themselves into a corner here. If things in the gaming landscape change I can see it's a console which can adapt quite easily (by say, changing tact and cutting support for Xbone) and stay relevant for a significant number of years.

So in less than 24 hours we've efficiently boiled yesterday's complex tech reveal down to "Xbox has no games" and "it's not much better than a PS4 Pro".

Perhaps this ability could be harnessed to improve Brexit; we should be able to have a trade deal thrashed out by lunchtime on Monday.

The core concept is that Scorpio sits alongside Xbox One offering the same games, the same fundamental gameplay, separated not just by 1080p and 4K display ownership, but also by how committed the users are to owning the latest and greatest technology. - DF

And at a premium price. This reveal with DF has not really moved my thoughts on Scorpio at all. I'm excited by it but I need to see what it will do and what experiences it will have. Playing an old Halo or The Witcher better isn't on my radar.
