Anyone buying a PS4 now in readiness for PSVR is in for a seriously epic disappointment. I'm a big fan of the PS4 and its games, but it does not have anywhere the punch for VR. Not even close.

This isn't the case according to just about everyone who's tried PS VR.

Can someone please explain to me why six, over five (perhaps less you might even consider) is such a big deal? And how it is such a big deal when 'nobody gets left behind'?

Well for a start it hinges on you believing that.

It depends what you want. If you want VR that works, PSVR is fine. If you want VR PS4-quality games, it clearly isn't.

I guess MS don't mind killing the entire reason for consoles to exist since they expect to still get those sales on PC. Maybe? Whole thing is totally insane to me, VR is nowhere close to being mainstream enough to justify these moves.

But by definition VR can't be mainstream if the mainstream can't access it.

Games consoles are clearly going to push the early uptake of the technology.

I guess I'm kind of relieved because I was all ready to rush out and get one of those Slims, but that show did very little for me and by the end had outright convinced me not to buy one.

So other than doing the exact opposite of what they intended, great show!

I guess it depends if you want to spend $299 on the games out in the 18 month interim. That said, the closer we get to scorpio launch, the stupider that would be for non-owners.

That said, how many 360/PS3 owners haven't converted, yet?

I'm talking more about how this was a bizarre presentation from a PR point of view.

It's like come October, Apple announcing the iPhone 7 and then immediately following it up with a video of Johnny Ives talking about how the iPhone 7 is bit rubbish and that the iPhone 7S will be much, much, better,

So I missed the first half of this, but all caught up now.

If I had to sum it up in a word, I'd go with solid - there was a good pace to it, some good demoes and footage from games we hadn't seen, nothing really dragged. Detailed thoughts:

Gears: Bog-standard AAA action game, looks like it's doing nothing new, people will buy it anyway.

Forza Horizon 3: Stunning and looks like it's really fun, haven't played Forza since 2, but might pick this up.

Recore: Hmm, not too sure about this one, looked very busy.

FFXV: I want this to be good but that was a disaster of a demo, the face on the translator guy who wasn't playing! Square don't seem to have kept camera control and combat responsiveness up with their graphics, and thanks to them changing the battle system of FFVII you'll have all these problems added to that game too!

Fighting Games: Don't give a shit.

FIFA: Don't care.

Indie Montage: Xbox folks, buy Stardew Valley!

Scalebound: Looked pretty good and typical Platinum, right down to the cheesy buttrock music playing during the bossfight. The implied multiplayer stuff has a big question mark as to how that'll work.

Dead Rising 4: Not much interest in this tbh, looked fine.

State of Decay 2: More my kind of zombie game, loved the first, couldn't work out if the tagline meant multiplayer?

Sea of Thieves: Presentation looked pretty cringey, but game seemed fun. Blackwake but not shit, with loads of extra stuff to do.

Halo Wars: Don't really care. I thought we blew up the Ark in 3?

Scorpio: Microsoft seem very confident, setting out the standard for whatever this gen is. No pricepoint announced though, and that's probably the most significant detail.

Ha yeah!  Some people's consoles are going to be better than other people's consoles and boy are they going to type some words about it on the internet!

It starts already.

Shits gonna be glorious when both new machines launch.

2/3rds of a 1080, 18 months hence. It's not completely out there, as things go.

Yeah.

It's just below the GTX 1070 which does 6.5 terraflops and is currently going for about £399, but which is likely to settle down into £350 in coming months.

Don;t base performance on TFLOPS numbers. AMD and Nvidia calculate them differantly. Still it's probably based on a 480X chip or a clocked up 480. Nice bit of grunt.

Sorry, should be clearer, I meant it hinges on you believing "No one gets left behind".

Gotcha. Well, the caveat will be, if it needs one, that they meant One. XB1, S, and Scorpio all being Ones. Doesn't technically mean anything for hardware beyond that.

Having said that, again, it's not completely out there that they could pull it off. Be cool if they did, right?

I was set to go Xbone for a bit too, and having the same reaction now. Either not interested because I played enough of those games on the 360 (Gears etc), and I'll just get the few things I was interested in for the PC I'll inevitably build because fuck Scorpio and Neo.

Well let's see: we had plenty of people losing their shit over the suggestion that the consoles were underpowered, as well as chafing at the even the idea that mjight want to at least consider a PC.

I mean, I predict we're going to see quite a lot of hypocritical people buying this things despite supposedly being entirely happy with the power of the Xbox.

And if you're willing to spend £800-900 on two Bone consoles, why would these same people never even consider a PC?

I'll buy one and I'm totally happy with my Xbox.

I also wouldn't currently buy a PC for gaming either, as I just want the simplicity of a console.

I don't see what the big deal is. You just seem to be hating on MS for some reason.

Not sure if agreeing with it being realistic or not. At this point, though, it'd be a stupid thing to repeatedly say, this far in advance, and not deliver on it. Not saying they're beyond being stupid, granted.

I wonder if the lack of a Neo announcement is because they're checking duct tape availability before making an announcement?

think I get this reference? Hm.

The gears in my brain are hard at work now.

Still odd why they are bring their exclusives to PC as well. I mean it basically gives consumers no reason to buy an xbox one over a reasonably okay PC. Oh and look forward to all MS games now showing PC screen shots and not xbox one.

Not everyone wants a PC. Even fewer now than past years, as PC sales are in a pretty big decline.

I don't have a Bone but that was a pretty strong show. Select highlights - Horizon 3 looks incredible, there was a nice range of smaller indie style games, Scalebound looked...well I'll admit, it seemed a bit slow by Platinum standards - but it could still be okay. On Twitter I was certain that TxSF was resurfacing but it turned out to be Tekken 7  FFXV didn't look all that great but I thought the playable demo was interesting so I might still keep an eye on it.

In general - good. I'm still not going to rush out for the console just yet but they've shown a decent enough hand.
