Depends how far away they're launching.

Both Microsoft and Sony get their chipsets for GPU/CPU from AMD. AMD recently revealed their 14nm budget GPU for 199 dollars which is approx 5.5 TF. If you had a higher clocked custom version of that, it could reach 6TF easily enough. The chipset exists for Sony to bump up to  - AMD would gladly take more money from Sony if it is feasible for their devs to adjust and I don't see why it would be just to get more raw power in the GPU as the architecture will still be exactly the same.

Ah, yeah, I forgot about the RX-480.

The era of endless tweaking shit to get a PC game running have largely disappeared. Steam, as you said, has made things easy. Also moderate PC's game outperform current console games at 1080p. You no longer have to spend a shitload for a better than console PC.

You know, it took me a week to find the time to factory reset my Surface* because it was acting up. Some people are too busy to do all the prerequisite stuff to building a PC. Yes, it's much simpler these days, having come myself from the era of fretting about IRQs for soundcards, but it's not as simple as getting it out of the box, is it? I completely agree with what you're saying, but you just need to accept some people need that ultimate convenience, particularly as this entire forum turns into old, bearded farts with kids.

*Fucking thing wanted to go back to 8.1, evidently 10 didn't overwrite the recovery partition when it installed. Had to grab a recovery image from MS and boot from MS, and for that I had to wait for a USB drive big enough to arrive from Amazon. I digress.

Because not everyone wants to buy (and more importantly maintain) a PC to play high res games on.

My Pc is nearing 6 years old.  Maintenance has been 1 graphics card replacement this year.

So I got 5 years out of it, or a year more than you would have out of an Xbox 1...

(Yes, price and the fact they won't stop making xbox 1 games JUST yet etc etc)

Steam boxes were not reasonably priced. Build your own PC's are way cheaper. 400 quid and you can have a PC that will beat current consoles and even project scorpio. Obviously there is the added cost of a monitor if you want it.

You can't currently build a 6TF PC for £400

They don't make their money on hardware - they make it on software. They want as many devices as possible to deliver software on. They don't give a shit whether you buy their stuff on a xbox or not as long as it is their stuff

I suppose that is true but I'm thinking perhaps in a bit more of a traditional console kind of way and perhaps that era is disappearing or morphing to something new.

Really? Using the 1070?

It's a non-issue to me. Proper high-end (as in high settings) 4K gaming on PCs is a very expensive area right now.

I just think 4K isn't what they should be aiming for right now. I think resolution is fine as long as it's at the native res of your TV. 4K TVs are taking off and yeah a native 4K would look great on it but I have a fantastic 1080p led that I bought for £1200 in 2011 and every time I turn it on I amazed with the picture quality and fail to see what 4K offers above it. The text is super crisp. It might be 5 years old but it's still better than any TV people I know own.

There's no way Sony will take those Scorpio specs lying down. They'll be doing everything they can to try and better it now.

Whatever happens, the battle between Sony and MS is brilliant for us gamers.

The 480 launches next month and that's a 5.5 TFLOP card (which would hit 6 on an overclock) and that card costs 199 dollars. Put a 50 quid motherboard and a 150 quid CPU chip, a 150 pound card and 8 gig memory as well as a 1 terabyte hard drive and that's roughly 400 quid maybe a little bit more.

Who are they, and what did they play?

You don't have to go far to get impressions from the big PS VR event at GDC.

I've tried Battlezone, which looked good.

It's probably not powerful enough for stuff like Fallout 4 VR, but in case you haven't noticed pretty much everything released on Rift and Vive so far has been pretty lacklustre. I think the best VR games aren't going to be the sprawling AAA things we're used to playing on our TVs.

I think MS may have stolen all the thunder with Scorpio. My interest in PSVR was tepid at best, now it's sub-zero.  I'll likely stick with my launch PS4, not bother with PSVR, PS4 Neo, nor the Xbox One, and then jump straight onto Project Scorpio.   Elite Dangerous in perfect VR in my living room, without a stupidly priced PC?  Yes please.

Its a good move by them and it's got me interested ]to see how it turns out but like I said before I'm not interested in 4K. The main thing is the cost of the Oculas though. Add that to the price of this new box and it;s going to get very steep.

The upcoming continuing fall in the pound's price is going to upset people.

$199 * 1.2 / 1.35 (Nvidia rates before the pound really dropped) - £175.

£175 + £50 (cheap motherboard) + £150 (cpu) + £50 (memory) + £50 (hard drive) + £40 (cheap nasty case) + £40 (cheap nasty power supply) + £40 (windows) = £600.

If you think 50% is "maybe a little more" then you're about right.
