Conference Expectations:

 

After last years full blown geek out, which saw Sony announce a slew of wish list titles, I hold little hope that this year's Playstation conference will be able to beat it. That doesn’t mean of course, that Sony don’t have a lot to show, but how do you follow up The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake? Any bets on Half Life 3 showing up?

 

Let’s have a look at what we know Sony have coming. We’re almost certainly going to get a fresh look at the aforementioned The Last Guardian, which will hopefully come with a release date attached. Guerilla Games made quite a splash with Horizon and so I would expect to see a more thorough showcase of that, along with Media Molecule’s perplexing Dreams project.

Filling out their known titles, we should be afforded a proper look at Quantic Dream’s latest narrative driven adventure, Detroit and I’ve no doubt that Activision reps will be on hand to show off the next Destiny expansion. Bookend it all with an expanded look at the incredibly cool looking Gravity Rush 2, and they’re already in pretty solid territory.

 

When we look at the rumours flying around for what Sony may show, we’re truly in kitchen sink and then some territory. For starters there’s God Of War 4, a game we all but know is in development, but of which very little is actually known. With Uncharted 4 now launched, it makes sense that God Of War 4 will be drafted in as the PS4’s poster child for graphical prowess.

 

Sony Bend are said to be working on a zombie themed shooter, going by the name of Dead Don’t Ride and it’s high time we see what Infamous dev, Sucker Punch have been working on these past three years. Knack 2 is all but confirmed to be in development at this point (although that’s more than likely going to be a TGS reveal) and there’s serious chatter about a Sony exclusive Spiderman game.

Talk is also ratcheting up around the likelihood of Resident Evil 7 being announced at the event, whilst over at Take Two a sequel to Red Dead Redemption is also being talked about. A reveal on the Sony stage would be a suitably large stage for such a widely anticipated title.

 

Of course Sony aren’t just supporting PS4 at this event, there’s also their upcoming (sorry Vita) Playstation VR platform, due to launch in October. With over fifty games promised for release throughout the launch period, Sony will likely roll out a killer sizzle reel but leave the show floor demos to do the talking. The titles they have announced so far range from the action driven, such as Ace Combat 7, Rigs, Rez Infinite, Star Wars Battlefront, Eve: Valkyrie, The London Heist, Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood and Battlezone to the more experimental titles like Eagle Flight, Golem, Psychonauts: In The Rhombus Of Ruin, Dead Secret and Robinson: The Journey to sports titles like the crazy sounding 100ft Robot Golf and the more traditional Gran Turismo Sport.

Finally, there is the much rumoured and all but confirmed, PS4K / Neo. Offering greatly improved specs, it remains to be seen if Sony talk about the console at their conference, but given that a big part of it’s appeal is centered around how the additional performance will benefit Playstation VR, launching it alongside the device in October could well be on the cards.

 

In terms of any left of field surprises, then hope springs eternal that a new Crash Bandicoot will finally see the light of day, admittedly by this point hope is kept alive through sheer force of will on the part of the Sony die hards, but as Sony have shown last year, they do value fanservice. Personally I’d love to see a Resistance HD collection or a Resistance 4 and I continue to keep my fingers crossed for a Syphon Filter reboot, but alas, I doubt I’ll be getting either.

 

Should be a packed show though and if it comes even close to last year, we’re in for a treat. :)

Place your bets then - how many Vita games will be shown? I'm guessing the chibi FF might return and maybe there will be an indie montage :P

 

Keen to see PSVR but also hoping for updates on Gravity Rush and Nier. And new stuff obvs. And maybe a rehash of the recent P5 news, I dunno.

TGS seems like the better bet for that and maybe whatever Euro show they do this year.

 

Now that Dead Rising 4 seems to be an X1 exclusive I can see Resident Evil 7 maybe a PS4/PC release. 

 

I just really want to see Sucker Punch making a Spider-Man game.

I'll happily eat my words if its great, and not just the same thing recycled again (hopelessly out of step with what everyone else is doing in the racing genre) and Yamauchi isn't just spunking the budget on track days and driving expensive cars, to actually deliver even an online mode that isn't on drugs.

Even if you love Gran Turismo and the new one turns out to be the best thing ever in every way, those goddamn Gran Turismo presentations are always so fucking boring. People always bitch about the sales numbers graphs Sony used to show during their press conferences, but they forget that Yamauchi and his 20-lap demo of a single, empty track always makes you wish they would go back to discussing sales numbers.

I have a feeling this years Sony show might seem a bit boring after last years double whammy of FFVII and Shenmue 3, both of which came completely out of nowhere. Which in itself is pretty amazing.

I'm pretty sure they'll do something similar again in terms of helping an old classic get a chance at seeing if there's interest in a modern remake.  Gets some good PR, gamer goodwill  and the possibility of a decent game at the end of it too.  I can imagine it's an approach that doesn't costs too much as well compared to a brand new game IP.

Watching the latest footage of it reminded me how everything is better with Japanese voiceovers - shades of PES. If they could get the Japanese commentary over all online replays it'd be amazing.

It really wouldn't surprise me if Sony has been prodding Valve every year to let them do a surprise announcement. Whether that be L4D3 console exclusivity (which wouldn't be a tough deal to land), a new IP or HL3.

I think all I would like this year is some amazing announcement for VR on the same level REZ (Time Crisis is something Id want), and a 2016 release date for either Gravity Rush 2 or The Last Guardian.

 

In terms of something leftfield a Parappa, Dark Cloud or Omega Boost sequel would be great, but probably more suited to TGS or PSX.

 

EDIT: And new IP. Always new IP - even it's borrowing heavily from some other games, nothing beats new games in new universes.
