dont be a dick

I don't really understand why my post was bad -- everyone else has expressed their fears, concerns and negative premonitions about what will happen to GamesTM and Retro Gamer -- I just did it with an image. But if I got it wrong I got it wrong, so - deleted.

because it was that "this is fine" picture, edited to make fun of strider putting on blinkers and losing his job. it was rude and unfunny.

you deleted it after 2 negs, i took a beating from the EU thread but didnt delete them

If I'm told that a joke backfired, I feel a huff of anger - which is really shame - but then I concede that you're probably right and take it down. I didn't take it down to avoid negs.

I didn't intend the image to have any meanness to it. I have a lot of respect for strider and I've loved the magazine for years. I apologise.

Thanks angel, it's appreciated. And when I said Retro Gamer was fine, I didn't necessarily mean me.  Until everything has been approved I don't know what future's plans are for me or the mag. What I do know is that it's not cool seeing your job security and the security of your kids being made fun of just so someone can get a cheap laugh.

of course I have to tell myself my job is safe, it's going to be a pretty miserable time otherwise while it all gets sorted out.

all I can do is post the facts and the facts?

You will be fine mate, you're the recognisable face of that success. Even in the worst possible scenario (which I dont forsee at all) you've got the cache of lifetime RG editor to your name. You may even be asked to help others attain that level, either way, I think you're safe man.

It was a misfire, that's comedy..you have to play with the line and sometimes you cross. God knows I've done it plenty.

Has anyone ever deleted a post smoky because they got 'negged'?!

Hope all stays stable for Retro Gamer and all if the staff @strider.

I only buy two games magazines these days, and this is the one that I enjoy the most, by a country mile. I have no idea how the team create so much great content each month, from the totally obscure to the better known machines and games, but am very happy that they do..

No worries mate :)

You'd think Retro Gamer would be more safe than GamesTM, it has much less overlap with anything Future does itself currently, while GamesTM competes nominally with both Games Master and Edge for the multiplatform reader. It's slightly shocking to see how much shrinkage there has been in the UK market since I stopped reading game mags, Future now pretty much has a complete monopoly on the remaining survivors.

Retro gamer will be fine. All the other games mags will immediately go under review. Some will be axed straight away. Some will struggle on for a year. People will be offered voluntary redundancy. Anyone left after that will be dispersed between the mags they keep and other Future mags. Within two years, almost all of the mags will be dead, and most of the staff will have moved on.

Thats is what Future did when they bought Computec (where I worked) and then again when they bought mags from Emap and Dennis. It's just what they do.

I expect GamesTM and SciFiNow to get the chop fairly quickly, though hopefully Retro Gamer will survive.

Future published PC Zone for 6 years. They're more than willing to have two magazines on the same topic if both make a profit. GamesTM and Scifi Now both have distinct audiences that wouldn't migrate to a Future equivalent if they were closed/merged, so it makes sense to continue publlication in the short to medium term. I imagine a revamp is on the cards for GTM to help stabilise sales though.

That said, what do I know? I thought we'd still be in the EU.

Strider, I hope everything works out for RG, I enjoy reading it.

I agree with what angel says. Looking at a (I guess sort of related) situation with Rushy, a sad event resulted in a new opportunity and I am sure whatever happens with RG the same will apply to you. Whether it's the/a new mag or a digital opportunity (YouTube, etc) there is a big demand for the quality nostalgia and insight that you and your team apply to older games, machines and industry milestones.

SciFiNow is a mostly-terrible magazine. I say mostly, because the stuff in the back of it is generally brilliant. Or was. Fuck paying for mostly-bilge.

This is probably my fault. I subscribed to RG ages ago and it went bust. I subscribed to ONM and EGM and they both went bust. I've recently subscribed to RG again.

Sorry.

Bit gutted with this buyout since Imagine do lots of great subscription offers like 3 for £1; something which Future rarely bother with. There mags are also very light on advertising again something which is the opposite with Future. Check out the ads in Edge v GamesTM and you get a whole lot more content in the latter for 50p less these days.

I heard Future bought Imagine so they could use the word Games without paying a fee. :sherlock:

And retire the 'Edge' title because they're fed up having to deal with Langdell...

The best aspect of this is that Retro Gamer now gets access to all of Future's classic mags, including the chance for that much-requested Making of Super Play feature to finally happen. Get to it!

I hope somehow we can get emag versions of all the old magazines now. Probably not a huge market but easy money uploading a bunch of PDFs.
