The dot has the price inside it, they're obviously leaving that as a surprise. The random line usually has the

Reviews featured the normal monthly Edge magazine.

About ten years ago when I was applying for virtually any job that was advertised, I managed to land myself an interview at a local college.  Part of the personal specification was that you had to be 'proficient in Photoshop'.  For some reason I decided this wasn't necessary and applied anyway.  About five minutes into the interview the team of three assessors rose from their desks and lead me over to a PC to flex my shopping muscle.  What followed was the longest three minutes of my life as I wowed them with my knowledge of a program I have never touched in a field in which I had no expertise or talent.  I think I managed to hastily cut out an image of an astronaut, flip him vertically and then paste him next to the Eiffel Tower. 

 

I guess what I'm saying is that's a completely hideous cover.

Hah. That's a much better cover than the original. It always used to please me when I'd beat Edge to the punch on certain making ofs (Strider being one I believe).
Amazed it's taken them this long to start doing retro stuff.

What an awful cover. Looks like they just randomly resized and plonked some generic art assets onto the page and called it a day.

 

The bottom row is especially rubbish. Looks like a giant gun is about to shoot 3 tiny men in the face.

I wonder if they sell many copies of those things at retail, as opposed to mail order and digital editions where the cover doesn't need to attract readers. Not that it should be so bad as to actively discourage them from buying it.

It's not that hard to get into, it just takes a theoretical knowledge (ie. a degree) and a willingness to be paid really shit wages.

The theoretical knowledge - I don't have the means to obtain a qualification, sadly. #foreveralone

 

We never hire a designer without a degree in something at least related, we just had someone with an industrial design degree, but they worked up. People here start on £17k, in London. I guess that translates to £14k-ish.

 

Surely there's an evening course or something you can do? It doesn't really need to be a super-impressive qualification, just a way of saying "I know what kerning is and can prove it".

That cover was so eye-catching when the issue was released, back before pixel art was commonplace, and before retro-gaming was as commonplace, indeed, before Retro Gamer existed in its current form. Still one of the most memorable games magazine covers ever.

I'm not sure if anyone cares now, but the anti-competition issues with Future's purchase of ScifiNow have been resolved. The magazine is now published by Kelsey Media.

 

I picked up the latest issue today. It's shrunk down to A4, but is otherwise the same as ever.

 

Edit: Look at all of the mags in that Guardian article. I'd forgotten about TipStation and Play Gamer!

So they deemed Games TM and Edge to be different enough to not compete with each other. I notice GamesTM now has the Future logo on it but oddly still has the Imagine subscription website pages inside and deals. 

 

I can still see a merge soon. Both Edge and GamesTM haven't been refreshed for years now.
