The thing is MS are really pushing this now and most of their titles going forward are going to have Xbox<->PC play out the gate making for a much larger online playerbase. Despite their massive sales I'd bet a lot of the more casual PS players don't have a PS+ subscription. This feels like it could mark a big shift in the console landscape so why are they so resistant to it? The devs have done all the work and will be meeting the cost of servers etc so what is the problem?

A platform holder will naturally have more considerations to deal with than a game developer. Getting cross-platform play to work might not be a huge technical challenge on an individual basis, but it could have knock-on effects related to network load, console social features, the certification process, etc.

You can bet that Microsoft spent time internally evaluating the decision before announcing it, especially as it's a change of heart most wouldn't have expected.

Yeah MS seem really keen. I don't remember them being this keen last gen when they were way ahead on hardware sales though.

It's a key part of MS strategy now, but Sony has nothing to gain from going down that route. They would eat into their own hardware sales by allowing cross platform with Xbox, I can't see why they would even consider it. If they had a very different market proposition than MS then it might make sense, but since they are in direct competition trying to sell a lot of the same software, it doesn't help them at all.

Why would you disincentivise people from buying your console to play with their friends?

Of course it makes sense for Microsoft to do so, when they can suddenly say you can have access to Halo and Forza and still play with all your mates who have a PS4.

It's obvious why, in pure business terms, Sony wouldn't be interested in allowing console cross-platform play. Attempting to anthropomorphise the situation by describing a company as petulant and so forth sits squarely in the domain of mental fanboys.

Strange , as I'm sure we play PC players on PS4 Rocket League

They're the ones with the PSYNET badges on the scoreboard.

Microsoft want it because they're playing the 'we just want everyone to be friends 'company card, because they're behind this gen. If Sony are in the same position as MS in 5 years where they're 'losing', they'll be playing the cuddly company PR card too. Simple as that really, it's not the 1st time in gaming that politics trumps tech and it won't be the last.
