Staggering fuck-up. Bizarre to send your actors to international conferences and then pull a stunt like this.

 

I'm fascinated to see how quickly Paramount+ fails. Apple can barely sustain a streaming service and they have more money than God.

There definitely needs some consolidation in the sector. What do we have so far, or planned:

 

Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Peacock, Paramount, HBO Max, Disney, Sky 

 

I just don't think the smaller services will be able to survive on their own.

The danger here is not just that Paramount pisses off existing Trekkies - which they undoubtedly will, but the hardcore fans will always have their DVDs anyway.

 

But this will also help to remove Star Trek from the public eye. If you put all the shows on a streaming service where (and I don't think I'm exaggerating here) it's pretty much the only thing worth watching, only existing fans will subscribe. You can carry on milking those fans for a while but you'll never attract any new viewers, there won't be another generation of Star Trek fans. It doesn't matter how many spin-offs you produce, the show will wither.

 

Meanwhile I suspect I'll just find something else to watch. Ten years ago, maybe even five years ago I'd have fired up a torrent program and downloaded Discovery as it came out, now I just can't be bothered. I already subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ and between those three I have more things I want to watch than I could possibly ever get through. There's literally zero chance of me signing up to another service. Especially for a show where the bit I enjoy the most is the communal weekly hate-watch on rllmuk.

 

I'll be gutted if we lose Lower Decks, though.

Absolutely right. For me, though, to the high seas! Do I even remember how to do it, it’s been ages!

 

This is a bit of a power grab - Paramount hope that the people who’ve watched Discovery on Netflix will subscribe because they love the show… but that’s not how it works. No one will jump ship to a new platform for one series that isn’t even particularly good (and without Picard or Lower Decks until at least season 3). Disney Plus had everything Disney had done before, plus the promise of new Marvel shows coming off the back of the most successful movie of all time, and much-hyped new Star Wars stuff. A somewhat different prospect to the thrills of more Burnham crying every episode.

 

Whichever suit was behind this decision is going to have a rude awakening.

Looking at the lineup, Paramount have NCIS, Rugrats, Beavis and Butthead, Clarissa Explains it All and Daria so if you’re in your late 30s, this 90s nostalgia service is for you!

 

As others have pointed out they also have Lower Decks which could be a huge problem.

Although weirdly, NCIS is now a Disney Plus title as Fox held the UK distribution rights.

Err, perhaps it's time to see if I can get past episode 1 of season 1, before that goes from Amazon too (or maybe I shouldn't get attached to it).

 

Agree totally with @McCoy that there are far too many streaming services; it's like the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war of 2007 all over again, except this time there are seven or eight optical disc formats duking it out rather than two. Or something.
