Tilly was tolerable to start with but she's been getting fatter and zanier with every episode. She's basically just comic relief at this point, no attempt to make her an actual character. In Season 3 she'll probably get her own laughter track.

Perfect.

Moan, moan, moan. Yet you all will be back for season 3. It’s almost tragic that people will force themselves to watch something they hate, week after week.

I absolutely adore Discovery, and I thought the finale was breathtakingly shit.

You missed a bit.

Did they just...

Spoiler

...Poochie the entire cast of Discovery never to speak of them again?

They could have but within two episodes of next season it'll be back to normal.  The writers lack the discipline.

Also, how can something so look good also be so bad?

Really? You're description of that was breathtaking?

Unless you're saying it was breathtakingly shit.

This was, I think, a much stronger finale than this uneven season really led me to expect. It had a genuine sense of scale from simply giving each member of a big ensemble cast something to do that was dramatic, personal to them, and which contributed to the overall goal. It's simple writing but it really worked.

Spoiler

A clean slate, then? I've always been one to say "screw the continuity" but this is the next best thing. I'm very intrigued to see where they decide to go.

I had to laugh at the writers saying that series three will be good as they don't have to follow canon anymore and can make their own. YOU NEVER FOLLOWED FUCKING CANON IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU IDIOTS!

What specific bits of canon are they not following?

As far as Klingon design goes, that’s not really a 'canon' thing is it though? (I mean ridged foreheads aren't strictly canon aside from some weak retconning). Spocks story doesn't go against canon either, we've just had new details revealed to us.

Sybok showed they can chuck in extra family members when it suits them, and they changed the appearance of not just the whole race, but individual Klingons with Kang, Kor and Koloth.

But seriously, I think the writers literally read this thread for ideas now.

Leaks from the latest script meetings:

"One, Poochie Tilly needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Poochie's Tilly's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Poochie Tilly"? Three--"

Just imagine for a moment they genuinely did realise Disco is fucking rubbish, and instead just did a couple of seasons of PikeTrek until he goes a bit melty.

It would be amazing, and you’d have the trauma of his fate hanging over you, knowing it was unavoidable.

But no, we’ll get Lt. Tilly and the Burnham Gurn.

I think the studio has probably at this point concluded that the existing Star Trek timeline isn't a place you can tell consequential stories, because the setting is already very rigidly defined, from technology to politics, and even relatively small deviations are not acceptable to large swathes of the fanbase. Not me, but enough that they might as well not bother. The original pitch for this as a small-stakes, lower decks show was a good way of working around that by simply not being consequential, and the Picard show is probably going to be doing something similar, but future Star Trek is surely just going to have to be... Star Trek in its own future.

I'm curious as to what that will look like if

Spoiler

a recognisable past Star Trek ship is part of that structure

of course. It occurs to me that both DS9 and Voyager were, in their own ways, efforts to get as far away geographically, politically, socially and technologically from TNG while retaining the framework that the audience understood. They literally each picked a quadrant of the galaxy where things hadn't happened yet and figured out ways to put TNG ships there.

I realise that the simple answer to this is always "tell a future Star Trek show long enough in the future that it's all different" but when you get that far away from ToS and TNG you might as well be setting up a whole new, original project and forget Star Trek altogether, right? You want to have phasers, transporters, shields and the warp drive.

I don't think anyone wants to watch a version of Star Trek where we know every week that the Enterprise and the main named crew members are definitely going to survive whatever peril it finds itself in.

(I'd be shocked if "TOS again but glossy" wasn't on the table, and this gives them an approach that's recognisable to audiences without clashing with the reboot movies.)

Nearly all shows I watch I know the main cast aren’t going to die. This is Trek, not GoT. How many characters in all of Trek where ever killed off? How many of the TNG main crew? Do you think they’ll ever kill off Tilly (fucking please), or Seru or Gurnham? So they don’t kill Pike or Spock? So what, no other dramatic potential at all?

I’m telling you they’re going to do their version of Andromeda and will probably make a big deal about it being Gene Roddenberry’s original idea in the marketing run up to season 3. Discovery will plop  out in some future where the Federation is long gone after some cataclysm (possibly a mysterious one that forms the mystery of the season). They can be as grimdark as they like and because everything is all post-space apocalypse Discovery can still be the most hyper-advanced ship on the block and they dodge that plot bullet.

Sure, I mean the plot of Calypso's got to pop up somewhere right? They already tied 2 of the 4 Short Treks in to the main story this season.

it was indeed. but there was very little peril. it was 90% nameless drone vs nameless crew member we never heard of. with 200+ "fighers" from two exploration vessels  we then had star wars droids that could have fixed critical issues with the ship. theres been no doubt that the visual effects of discovery have been nothing short of amazing. but peel back that thin veneer of space eye porn and you're left with a right load of old shite.
