Overwatch 2 - Now live, F2P - PC, Playstation, Xbox & Switch

I've made the strange decision to pick this up. 

I don't like first person shooters, I'm not good at first person shooters and when I try them I'm always terrible and have near instant buyers remorse.

Recent failed attempts to play an FPS include PvZ:GW & Star Wars:BF

 

I tried a few games of Overwatch on a free to play weekend  and quite enjoyed myself (despite being rubbish) and the recent Amazon price drop tempted me in.

So anyone got any pointers for an ultra casual terrible player?

I've only just started playing a month ago. Lucio is a great starting character. Just follow your team around and hit heal every 10 seconds. Use his Ult when a big team battle kicks off. Use his team speed boost at the start of each round. Just do those three things and your teammates will be happy enough. He scales up like crazy so in the hands of the Pro's he is also a mega fast, wall running, death dealing lunatic but if you just follow the basic "stay close to your team, keep healing" your helping alot.

Just remember one simple rule: everything that goes wrong is always the fault of your team mates and/or the game. And you need healing.

Andy! Nice to see you on Overwatch. Are you playing on PS4? We played FFXI together by the way in case you don't remember. I had an unfortunate ginger ponytail..ahem.

 

Anyway, the best advice is to jump into quick play and just try out the different heroes. You'll then get a feel for which are your favourites. I would try to learn at least one hero from each category - so tank, dps, defence, builder, support.

 

I'm not that good at FPS games either but because Overwatch is team based, it's not as important as in games like SWBF where it's just a free for all. Generally you play a role within your team in Overwatch and if people work together you generally win. The tricky bit is actually getting them to do this and PTFO!

Mei can be deadly up close because her primary fire can freeze people. Also try using her alternate fire (ice spike) as it's great for sniping long range targets.  She's also very useful for area denial as you can use her wall to cut off the enemy team and isolate key players like tanks and healers.

I remember thinking a load of characters were duff when i first started playing. Then i would get into a game where I was against someone who knew how to use them and suddenly realised how powerful they were and would be itching to try them out my self.

Yeah that's a good point actually. I probably thought the same way. I remember thinking Lucio was pretty useless at first due to his piss poor gun(!) - 200+ hrs on him later and I'm still trying to develop better ways to play him more effectively including wall riding and positioning. Gonna be interesting if and when they roll out his PTR changes as both his healing and gun will get a buff but his positioning will become even more crucial because of the restricted radius.

Gloomy Andy, how you doing mate. Anyways have no fear, you can be pretty crap at FPS games and still do fine at Overwatch if you choose the right heroes. Try Reinhardt, Winston, Mei, Mercy, Junkrat, D-Va, Lucio, Symettra, Torbjorn - all can be played without needing to be particularly good at aiming and rely more on good decision making, tactics and teamwork.

 

Sir Shrew - D-Va may not be that "meta" right now but she can still be very effective in the right hands and especially at lower ranks. The main thing is having a healer and sticking near them because she gets wrecked easily these days. Don't forget to use defence matrix to defend yourself and your team, really good for countering Bastion, protecting your healers. Use your jump jets to boop enemies (it causes 25 damage too), harass people on high ground and finally use them to escape if you're getting low on health, it takes a while to build up a new mech if you get blown up so better to stay in it as long as possible.

 

Also regarding Mei, she is actually lethal and much hated because of her abilities. At low levels of play you can ruin enemies because a lot of them won't know how to deal with her. Use your right click/secondary fire to hit long range targets, it causes a lot of damage. Use ice wall to block off enemies from chasing you or coming through chokes, and to protect yourself when you are about to die. You can also use it to trap someone from escaping whilst you charge them with your ice gun. You are amazing against big beefy tanks as you can freeze them easily without dying if you can get in close. For other characters if you don't get a freeze in, just use the ice block to heal/become innvincible at the last second, then continue the fight or place a wall at your feet once you pop out, if they're waiting to kill you. Mei is really hard to kill unless people focus on her because she can use Ice Block and Ice wall in cycles to stop people finishing her off. Once you freeze an enemy, use right click/secondary fire to headshot them for an instakill on most small targets and big damage on tanks. Also it slows enemies down so is great for dealing with Tracer, Genji etc.

Just had a game where I joined a team getting thrashed, no healers or tanks and the payload was breezing through! So I picked Orisa and dug in at the last checkpoint and we held them off for 3 minutes to snatch the victory. I'd blocked like 12,000pts or something.
 
Big fan of Orisa, she's easy to understand and get to grips with. It also felt like I'd won it for the team. [emoji3]

I really enjoy playing the tanks. Really don't worry about what the internet says about who is good and who not, play what you enjoy. I frequently play D Va as she can be very useful and her defence matrix can soak up more damage than say a Reinhardt shield in certain situations :-)

Listen to what sprite said. Play who you like to who fits your style. Get very familiar with a handful and good with two so you can always change depending on team composition. Ignore all the chatter about what character is good, overpowered, imbalanced and all that, it will only make you jump to the flavour of the month whenever there is a nerf/buff. It is best to play a character than to pick a character.

 

Right now it is supposedly all about Bastion because he is too strong on PS4. You'll see Bastion every where and the vast majority of Bastion players is terrible because they do not know the character, how much punishment it can withstand before dying, proper placement. All they know is that it is powerful. Well, not in the hands of a muppet.

I've been watching some guy named desRow on Twitch go from scrub to Grand Master in like a week, and he's exclusively used Turdborg with amazing success. Used some of his tricks and fucking hell, he's lethal.

What Torb tricks can you pass us Meh? Personally I find him really boring to play but kinda satisfying when you know your turret made a big difference.

 

Latest Overwatch news - the Omnic Kings Row event comes out next Tuesday and will feature some skins including Widowmaker and probably Mcree. Word is that it may be the biggest/best event to date. Also for anyone that missed it, Kings Row has had a slight graphical rehaul in good timing for the new Kings Row event, making the colour pallete warmer, optimising and adding new lighting, changes which I think have already gone to Live on PC.

 

Kaplan also pretty much confirmed Doomfist is coming at some point and will be tied into the Numbani storyline - they have a hero in the final art stages which means the gameplay/story will be finished - and presumably that is Doomfist. I reckon that will be the next big thing in the Overwatch schedule after this event. Finally there is a new comic coming soon casting more light onto the story of Overwatch itself. Worth pointing out that May is the 1 year anniversary of the game so maybe they'll time Doomfist or another big event for then.

I am picking this up second hand this week, how painful is it going to be as a noobie? I have zero experience of it and no real idea about the game, I played some Paladins on the xbone trial thing and liked the concept and understand Overwatch is a similar title and with it being raved about so much have been meaning to try for a while!

I've been playing a lot of Torbs since they added CTF. Using the turret mainly as a distraction, then getting in close with his alt fire to take them out. He's a bit underrated.

Shimmy it's a very friendly game for newbs. Gameplay is straightforward, shoot the bad guys, go for an objective which is clearly marked and obvious. It will take time to learn the heroes and abilities but it's not like League of Legends or something - once you've seen an ability once or twice you'll understand how it works. Just don't expect a massive amount of teamplay when you are starting out, it's more like a deathmatch at low ranks where people run around figuring everything out and blasting the crap out of each other! And the matchmaking despite its flaws is one of the best, if not the best FPS matchmaking systems out there, where it's rare to be lumped in with players way above your skill level.

Yeah and be sure to check out the Help button on heroes in gallery/character select which shows you the difficulty level and tells you about their abilities - one star difficulty heroes are good starting points, they usually have simple, easy to understand abilities that are often ripped from other games. Like Soldier is your COD guy, Mercy is your TF2 Medic, Reinhardt holds up a big shield and swings his big hammer, Junkrat spams grenades, Reaper runs around with his shotgun, Tracer blinks around and shoots stuff. Easy peasy.

 

Of course you could go straight into more difficult heroes but you are bound to die a lot and understanding how to use their abilities takes a lot more practice - and you'll understand them much better after seeing other players using them in your games.

Always be moving, don't get precious with your turret. Getting hunted down? Throw scrap, run around the corner, LVL1 turret, pop the fucker in the head. Guy doesn't seem to use molten core unless needed, like he'll pop it if the point is under serious threat, get to distance, rapid build a turret in a better position, and then start popping heads. It's common sense, really, but I wasn't really using scrap to boost my team and myself, and used to defend that turret with my life, not moving toward the opponent - which is sometimes stupid, as torb's gun can be a beast with decent aim.

 

Had some games with hoopyfordprefect last night using this play style, and didn't die once on Route 66 defence. They couldn't even get the fucking first point lol.

Yeah that doesn't surprise re: Torbjorn. I'm seeing a LOT more Torbs on Numbani, Hollywood now especially combined with Symmetra and the usual suspects - Rein, Bastion.

 

I have a friend that's a Diamond and he's just started playing more Torbjorn on comp. He's got a 91% win rate with him after about 25 games!

Thanks Meh. The one thing I'm never really sure about with Torb is whether I should be hanging back with my turret so I can fight alongside it/repair it, or be nearer the front lines. Like if I have a turret set back over the point on Volskya, should I be down at the choke getting in potshots? But if I die being agressive, there's a good chance someone can bust my turret and I take a long time to come back to build a new one. But my perceived "passivity" of Torb is one of the reasons I find him so boring, mothering a turret is no fun in my eyes and I get feck all done with my rivet gun unless someone's up close. Maybe I am using the wrong playstyle with him and should be much more aggro?

 

We need to get a list of PS4 rllmuk players. Noone updates the first post when people put their IDs up. Maybe Tobert can do it for us, or we should keep a list somewhere else? I am Jigsawn on PS4, feel free to add me and please write your forum name in the request so I know who you are!

Looks like I'll be handing in my Hanzo badge and moving on to Genji next week. All preparation for the arrival of Lucio 2.0 and his exiciting new 'No, I need healing' era.

Those dps heroes you mention are hard. Pharah takes a lot of practice, Genji even more so and he is a totally different style to every other hero, I don't get on with his playstyle at all and I've played the game for hundreds of hours and have given up on him, just not my cup of tea. Soldier's really good though if you're having problems, you can spray a lot meaning aim isn't as important, and your healing field is a total lifesaver. Plus you can sprint away to cover or when you are outnumbered, and take the high ground quickly to rain damage uncontested. Tracer is another good bet for DPS, it just takes a bit of practice to time your blinks and use your recall to save yourself from death at the right times, she is so fast that she can get to health packs easily so once you know the maps better you will survive much longer with her. Don't overstay your welcome and always leave a blink or recall in the bank to escape when you are in close, because without them you suddenly get very easy to kill.

 

PS How do you join this rllumk PS4 community? I know squat about the community feature of PS4, I don't even know where I would start looking - in the home menu presumably?
