No Man's Sky - PC Version Tech Chat

My experiences have been mixed but more positive. Still a very worrying port though.

I started off. Changed all my gfx settings and restarted. It was running 60 but had that weird hitching issue people have reported. I changed shadows to low, generation to high and restarted. The hitching has mostly gone away and it's running pretty well. I have drops but not where it matters.

Does look a bit of a disaster mostly though.

Okay, I must have played and finished the Wii version by mistake or something hen. My mistake. Explains why it was fuzzy as fuck and every character was leaving so many ghost trails that it looked like everyone was constantly performing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo super moves. Never mind the additional technical messes that plagued the UWP version.

You just massively undermined yourself by comparing it to wii level rendering.

PC has nearly always been about brute forcing better performance as it's always (historically) been done as an afterthought to the console build. Ironically this all looks set to change with play anywhere; QB came late in the day on PC wasn't even announced till close to release and was clearly MS testing the waters along with the later Forza:Apex for what is now to come with the likes of Gears4 and FH3. I suspect going forwards games like this that debut on a Sony machine then come to PC won't be nearly as impressive for the PC gamers as the XB/PC equivalents.

I was just going to post that, although tabbing breaks it.  Is borderless window an option? That might help.

HUD-less screenshots are an option though! Gotta figure out if keybinds for hud toggle are possible next..

OpenGL? Well that's AMD owners properly fucked then.

Looks like something needs to be done about frame pacing. My OSD says my frames are high, but my eyes tell me something is proper fucked.

Yep the framepacing is all over the shop.

Right I figured out it caps framerate by default so fixed that. Then turned on gsync. Now runs fine at 1440p. Still had weird hiccups in frames but they appear to be rare. Also textures are shit but at least is running alright and looks good. I can now just play. Phew

Well aside from the random hitches, it's running like a dream for me at max settings now.   Can't say I've noticed framepacing, but I'm only running vsync 60fps @ 1200p!

Does it also turn off the waypoints etc @dood?

I'd like to be able to turn the cockpit off as well, ideally.

The entire hud is off so yes.  You can't turn cockpit off.  What they really need is hud fade like on DkS3!

Nice.

I haven't played a PC game since about 1993, so I'm probably going to struggle with drivers and whatnot as it is, without any actual issues with this build of the game. So I might wait until the dust settles before I buy it on PC.

But the notion of playing it on the train to work does appeal rather...

Went back in and after a few mins the game settled and there was little to no stuttering.

But even with SSAAx4 the game looks pretty rough and low res. Maybe the assets are shit.

There are no assets .

On my GTX760, I had a few stutters at first but then they became infrequent enough to not care. I still knocked the graphics down to 1600x900 anyway, on the basis that I'm playing on a 720p television, so the drop isn't noticable. Left everything else at the settings they defaulted to, which I'm guessing may involve hardware detection as most settings were on medium as far as I could tell.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit restless and my heart isn't in it right now. Which isn't really a tech problem, but it does mean I only played for a half hour and have no idea what performance is like flying around yet.

So.. 1080p@30fps was a bit shit and stuttery. Turned up to 1440p@60Hz,16x AF and restarted and it was fine. Presume frame pacing.

will try with higher graphics options tomorrow.

but with a 6700k and 1080 I'd be quite concerned if I couldn't run it: it'd ask serious questions of what they'd been running it on in Guildford.

Initial impressions were of crushing disappointment.   I have a GTX1080 and even at 1080P it was a stuttering, glitchy mess.  Turned Max FPS to Max and it settled down a bit but to be honest I I think the game looks pretty poor and really rough and unpolished.  The UI is abysmal.  For a game that cost £10, maybe I could accept it but for £40 of my hard earned this to me is unacceptable.  Thank goodness for Steams 2 hour refund policy.  Months of great anticipation destroyed completely in a matter of minutes.

This worked (at least so far!).
