No Man's Sky - PC Version Tech Chat

I was waiting to see what the spec requirements and general launch state was like as I only have a 270x which is near minimum requirements I think, though having read all this it looks like the quoted specs were conservative. I've been thinking of getting a PS4 anyway to play Bloodborne so I'm really starting to wonder if I should just forget PC gaming for a bit just to avoid all these stupid issues. I was tempted to upgrade my graphics card recently but to be honest I've realised the only thing it's going to fix is to let me try VR, as these kinds of issues seem to be too commonplace now even with high profile releases on modern hardware.

Does it seem like a massive jump over the PS4 version to be worth trying on PC?

i decided to give it another try  ...and with a few tweaks the framerate situation, improved, not 60 contstnt but improved....but ...what on earth were they thinkg with the UI and control scheme...why the fuck is there a cusror for a pad! it makes navigating the menus an absolute ballache! and then you have to HOLD the button...aweful....

beween the garbage performane,c appaling control! and quite frankly what ive found to be an unbeleiveably dull game ( im aware he said it wouldnt be for everyone, but i was expecting to eb abel to explore and stuff, instead im playing mining sim 47... everything need resoureces and you cant hold many and they dont last very long...just dull :( ) i can honestly say, ive never been more disappointed with a game ive waited this long for... :(

im hoping all the will be fedback and it will improve over the next few months and be worth looking at ...hoping....

Yes, I think I might go for one of those. I'd much prefer a PS4 pad, but I believe the Xbone pad just syncs over Bluetooth right? So should be easy to get up and running.

I just plug mine in with a normal mini USB cable. So light without the battery pack and stuff too.

PS4 pad might work, you can download DS4 and try it. Some games don't play well but if you've already got one and your laptop has Bluetooth built in it'll cost you nothing to try.

Only the newest versions of the pad sync over Bluetooth, otherwise you'll need to use a cable or a dedicated dongle.

Make sure you uncapp the framerate. I have that set up and that was the issue for me. To be honest I think the feedback is a bit blown out of proportion. Textures are a bit low and framerate glitches occasionally but it is not bad. The studdering I had at the start was clearly the framerate cap. And the game has to restart once you set it to max. It is not an immediately refund. Give it a shot.

i've done some tinkering and it's fine now. nice game!

The textures are probably low resolution so they're quicker to generate.

Yeah also it's procedural so they can't tell exactly where a texture might end up.  But maybe they can optimize it.

There's also a "generation" option in the graphics, which seems to make objects and terrain look a tad nicer and generate further away.

Perhaps when the PS4 Neo comes out, they'll update it to utilize the extra horsepower, and maybe they'll bring those optimizations over to the PC version.

Thanks for all the controller tips peeps.

I might leave it though, if the PC version isn't that much of a leap. From what I've seen the graphics aren't much better, and I already love the way it looks on PS4 anyway. FOV doesn't bother me, neither does frame rate, and although less pop in would be nice I think it just goes with the territory in this game.

I think there's a good reason for the Hold button thing, which is that it avoids you accidentally doing stuff you didn't mean to, without the need for a tedious "Dispose of this element - are you sure Y/N?" type prompt.

As as for the rest, it might not be for you, but I watched this guy getting to grips with the PC version and you can see him warming to it over the course of an hour or so.

I really like his approach to the game, in terms of learning how it all works. I would at least give it a chance until you get into space.

It's basically the same as Destiny, although I think it works a lot better there. The cursor always seems to end up where you want it, and where you have to tap or hold the button always feels natural and intuitive. Here it's not quite so refined unfortunately, but still works well enough.

It turns out my streaming stutter issue hasn't been solved after all. I, which is a bit rubbish but it still runs fine when playing locally. It's a bit weird really.

What I loved most with the brief time I had this, was how almost every alteration to the graphic settings would require the game to be restarted.  When you are already frustrated and frankly shocked at the initial mess that is presented to you, and subsequent attempts to fix that mess end up with a tortuous wait for the game to shutdown and restart,  by the time I managed to get half decent performance I was already far too annoyed to sit down and enjoy the game.  I will keep half an eye on its progress over time, I am sure the performance is fixable.  As much as I admire the achievement from such a small amount of people, I also wish this had been picked up by a much larger company with tenfold more resource to provide the game that its ambition and potential deserves.

The best thing is that if you do it when you go into the game, as you do, you lose your starting planet and go to a different one after the restart. I went from Alderaan to post-nuclear Middlesbrough.

That's encouraging, thanks.

I'm on an i5 750 and a 7950 and it crawls to a halt much too regularly. Changing graphics settings doesn't make any difference, so if it isn't something that they can patch easily I would assume it has to put the blame on the processor. Ie. Don't hold your breath, but you might be fine.
