Most Common Issues and Workarounds

Hopefully it would be useful to summarise the most common issues we are currently aware of, and what we are doing to resolve them.

Resolved Issues

Error searching for MSVCR100.dll or launching from steam does nothing
Solution - This was due to lack of VC++ Redist 2010. This has been resolved in an update.

"Either Steam isn't running or you don't have a suitable license" message
Solution - the VC 2013 Redist is required and installed by Steam. It appears yours may be corrupt. Please download here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784)

Stuck with E or X on screen
Press and hold E on the keyboard or X on Pad (not a bug)

Temporary Workarounds

Framerate stutters during play
We are tracking a problem with the graphics card shader cache, causing shaders to be built during gameplay. We have a workaround we are testing, which will use our own caching mechanism.
In the meantime, playing the game you will notice these stutters become far less frequent over time.

If you alt-tab out of the game while it's in fullscreen mode, you aren’t able to bring it back up (if it crashes, see “Fixes in Progress”).
We’re testing a fix for this, but if you have the game in borderless mode, alt-tabbing works like normal.
Alternatively going to NMS in task manager and doing 'bring to front' works
Finally you can press the Play button on the Steam interface. It brings the window back.

On some CPU/GPU configurations, setting Max FPS to 60 gives sub-60 FPS.
Bumping to 90 FPS or above resolves this issue. A fix is in progress.

Sound crackling
Others have reported going to windows sound options and lowering the audio quality to DVD quality will resolve this. We are investigating this.

Large Frame Drops, Texture Flickering
We are working on a fix, in the meantime try disabling Steam Overlay. Go into the properties of the game in your steam client. Under the General tab uncheck the Enable Steam Overlay option.
Please also mail support@hellogames.co.uk and provide as much info as possible on this. We are working with Steam to reproduce the issue.

If you are having problems launching due to graphics settings
Your monitor settings have been incorrectly detected. Please go to your Steamapps/common/No Man's Sky/Binaries/SETTINGS/TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS from there you can either set "Fullscreen" to "false" or more appropriately, just put your proper resolution in and it should launch.
In here you can also experiment with graphical settings pre-launch, if you believe your settings are preventing you from launching

Crash to desktop after Initialise white screen
This is often caused by running on Intel GPUs, which are not currently supported.
If you have an NVidia or AMD driver, please ensure you have latest drivers and your card supports OpenGL 4.5
Until NVidia and AMD update drivers NMS might accidentally select the embedded/weak/low-power GPU. If you have more than one GPU make sure set NMS.exe to High Performance in their respective GPU management programs.
In particular, getting a Title Screen with just a black background and the words "No Man's Sky" followed by a crash is normally an indication of not meeting GPU and OpenGL 4.5 requirements. Make sure drivers are up to date, and that your machine is above min spec.

Mouse Jittering
We are tracking a problem where with certain CPU/GPU configs the mouse movement jitters (can look like frame out). We are testing a fix for this.

Occasional Large Frame Drop
We are seeing players suffer large frameout when their GFX card runs out of memory, and begins to evict to the CPU RAM.
This can happen if you have a lower amount of GPU memory, or if you are running at a high resolution.
Try lowering your texture quality or resolution to avoid this.

Issues in Progress

Crash on the Hello Games logo
Currently older AMD Phenom CPUs do not support SSE 4.1, which causes the title to crash. We’re testing a fix for this.

If you are having further issues, please report them to:
support@hellogames.co.uk

Experimental

We hope that you are enjoying No Man’s Sky, but if you have mailed support@hellogames.co.uk with an issue, then please know that we are working to respond and make your experience as smooth as possible.

For a list of most common issues and workarounds please go here:
Common Workarounds

Many of the most critical issues now have workarounds. PLEASE try these first.

We have hot fixes for many issues in a build which is currently with our test team. This will exit testing and be made live for all players early next week.
If you are having issues and want to check this out immediately, we have made it available in a new Steam branch, called "Experimental".

We've already resolved many issues for people who reported them by moving them over to this branch.

Here’s what’s different

Improved AMD Phenom Support
Thousands of lines of assembly have been rewritten overnight to support AMD CPUs. Unfortunately whilst the game code no longer relies on anything above SSE 2, Havok Physics still requires “Supplemental SSE 3”, which was not supported until “Bobcat” and above. We’re discussing with Havok.

Alt-Tab has improved
Some systems/configs were crashing or not pausing correctly on Alt Tab. This should now be resolved.

Shader Caching
Framerate was initially stuttering due to shaders not being correctly cached by the GPU on some systems. We have replaced the GPU caching system. You may notice some stutter during the Galactic Map intro to the game (the very first time you run), but it should be smoother from then on (this will be fixed in future). This is particularly true on ATI cards

Mouse Jitter
Smoothing on mouse movement has been improved to prevent hitching or stuttering, and is now adjustable through the Options menu in “Mouse Smoothing”.

Max FPS Cap
On some CPU/GPU configurations, setting Max FPS to 60 or 30 was not giving 60 or 30 FPS (causing stuttering). This has been improved.

Improved Performance
On CPUs with 4 threads or fewer, performance has been improved.

Intel GPUs
The game will now let you know if you are trying to run with an unsupported GPU. This will hopefully flag for some users that their high end GPU has not been selected.

Gsync
Gsync has been disabled by default, which was causing an issue for some users

Here is how you access it

To access the Experimental branch right-click on the game from the library page and select "Properties". Among the available tabs will be the "BETAS" tab.

Code: 3xperimental
Your new branch should be listed in the dropdown menu under "Select the beta you would like to opt into:"

If you encounter issues with this please mail support@hellogames.co.uk and include [EXPERIMENTAL] in the subject.

IF THIS BRANCH FIXES YOUR ISSUE, PLEASE LET US KNOW :)

Thank you,
Hello Games

Yeah was not a critique. almost all games will have that for certain settings. But it just did not tell me particularly about the framerate cap setting. I only noticed because my monitor has a build in frame counter and I noticed it was still locked at 30 and below. That setting is slightly broken in that it makes the fps fluctuate below 30 rather than actually lock it. So maybe it is broken about the restart warning as well and it does not come up every time you change it. Or maybe I just missed the warning. I am getting solid performance now. And enjoying the shit out of it.

I know. It's an annoyance, but man that's obviously so far down the list of priorities...

Of course - definitely lower in terms of priorities.  Still an issue that I'm interested in knowing if addressed or acknowledged.

The Steam experimental branch patch has sorted out all stuttering on my starter planet; with everything set to high (apart from medium shadows) I'm getting a smooth 60fps now on my i7-920 and 970.  Haven't explored or flown the ship yet though; but it was unplayable before hand.

What resolution are you running at?

Right, I've uncapped the framerate and wandering around by my ship (in a pretty open environment) at 1920x1080 I get 75-90 FPS.

I don't seem to have the 3440x1440 option but I can select 3325x1871 and I'm getting 38-45 FPS.

Cool - That's about 1.4million pixels more.

Guess a rough gauge would be that frame-rate or better.  Interesting that you get that resolution.

Thanks for the info - that's playable from my point of view.

Do remember that I haven't explored beyond this little area, so haven't flown yet or really done much.

Honest question. After you guys spend what sounds like hours fiddling in menus and optimising your PC to tweak every last iota of performance out of a game like this, can you actually box all that bollocks away in your mind and thoroughly enjoy the game itself, or is their a residual bitterness/ennui there that flavours your experience? Or is the fiddling and tweaking part of the meta-game?

It sounds like a fucking nightmare to me, and not just for the technically troubled games like this, but in general. I keep thinking of going PC, especially after the Neo/Scorpio announcements, but then I read a thread like this.

Edit: Reading this back I can see it could be seen as concern trolling. Really not meant that way. I wanna go PC. Built my own many moons ago. Anyway, not the thread for it. Apols.

I know you mean well but that is such a tiring question and debate because it has been done so many times so excuse my short answer.

Yes you can enjoy games on a PC (enjoy them even more because of how fucking good they look and getting x2 the framerate performance in most cases) and for 99% percent of experiences - you spend about 30 seconds in the options menu (where I just dial everything up normally) and software like geforce experience can even automatically choose settings for you and apply them with one click. I have personally never spent "hours" tweaking any game. I struggle to think of a game where I've even spent 10 mins tweaking. If a game is like properly fucked in the rare instance like Batman - I just wait for a patch and move on with my life.

If you noticed, I made this thread within 10 mins of installing and playing NMS. 10 mins was all it took to let me know this was an abnormal experience. See how many other PC "is this fucked?" threads I've made. You'll find that you struggle.

Edit: And btw let me add this, by the time a game is almost done installing on my xbox one, on the PC version I would have already installed it on my pc and done my "tweaking" and already been playing it

I also think the reaction to NMS was somewhat hyperbolic..  But I think that was probably because I'd played about 15 hours of the ps4 version, and the PC version ran a lot better than that!

Also the extent of my 'hours' setting it up consisted of going to the menu, changing a few settings and restarting the game.  It was pretty much fine after that!

It's not the best looking game in terms of image quality, there's some weird low-res up scaling thing going on, but it only seems to affect objects that are affected by lighting, it's really weird.  I wonder if there's some post process lighting techniques going on that are calculated using a lower res screen sample, or something.

So the basic gist is that the PC version is getting sorted?

Definitely want this, especially after watching Youtube video's for the last couple of days. Have a PS4 but never use it, so it'll be the PC version I get. Might just wait a month or so and see if the price drops a little bit

I don't spend that long either. But I fucking love that part of it as much as playing it! A lot of games on steam I install mess about with the settings see how good and smooth it runs. Get my tech erection and go back to playing witcher. I actually struggle to understand why anyone serious about gaming would not have a PC in this day and age. ;)

It it took me one minute to change all graphics settings to theIr highest and that fixed the initial performance issue I experienced as it seems that the capping of the FPS to 30 was the only problem. It's a strange option to include even without it being broken as I can't think of a single reason to play a game at 30fps unless absolutely necessary.

Not that much of a nightmare really.

Yep. The framerate capping appears to have been screwed. If you aren't a nutter with an AMD CPU and/or GPU it's otherwise been pretty much fine.

No offence was meant to the thread starter or anyone else. It's just when I read posts where the gist is 'Months of anticipation destroyed in minutes' (hyperbole or not) I get the fear about going PC. Anyway moving on.
