Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition

been quite a lot of chat on this game recently that it deserves it's own thread.

I've had it since last week and have played the first scenario a few times now.  It's absolutely brilliant.  The app transforms what would be quite a difficult to manage game with multiple enemy/event cards into something that takes 5 minutes to set up and offers vast scope for some great gaming out of the box and in the future with expansions.

Extremely easy to pick up (niggling wording around 'range' aside) - it's a perfect game for those new to board gaming as well as seasoned old hands like me.  It's also a great introduction for friends.  The app adds atmospheric music, interactive puzzles - but does it so well that it genuinely feels like a board game complement, rather than turning a board game into a video game.

It's expensive, but I can't recommend it enough.  I hope they bring out a scenario editor for it - would be great to create your own wee scenarios for sharing online.

Yeah I played and loved it.

I'm really tempted to give it a purchase (friend in my pub games group has it - but it'll only make infrequent appearences)

If they support it with expacs and upadtes, it'll go for a while

In the app - you tell it what you already own, including first edition stuff and expansions... and it makes them available within the app.

A huge draw for me is just how quick it is to set up.  Literally minutes - for a game of its type and depth, you'd normally spend an age just on set up.  I'm a massive fan of Arkham Horror - but it doesn't get the table time it deserves because it can take about 45 minutes just to get everything set up.

This is 5 minutes.  From 'I fancy playing it' to starting out with my first investigator phase - 5 minutes.

£71 though. £71

The only thing really putting me off is replayability - I think the 2nd edition comes with 4 scenarios, and I don't know how different each run through would be (our host had done a test run and said it was quite different for the same scenario)

1st editions, expansions etc all add to that though

Out of stock. I've seen it for £75, and want it, but it's just a little too rich for me. Even if it had infinite replayability, I couldn't spend that much money at the moment.

I am so getting this at some point (when I have space and money to spare).

I have the original, the forbidden alchemy expansion and a few of the small expansions. Despite enjoying it, we never really played it much though. It proved to be too laborious to set up and sometimes ended up feeling a bit broken. So I have all these lovely components that felt like they were just going to gather dust.

Everything I hear is that it is better in every way.

And I get to use all the stuff I already have!

I've only played one game - but we were all leaning over the tablet (decent size one...sort of near A4) to read text, watch layout, contribute to puzzles.

I think it could work on a phone (no idea if it's available) but bigger would be better

One thing to mention - a chap I was talking to last night bought it soley on the back on seeing us play it the week before.

He's played the same scenario with his family and got some fairly different encounters around the same frame work.

My copy arrived first thing this morning so I haven't played it yet, but I am disappointed with what I have for my money. The miniatures are quite poor and do not fit into the bases easily. The bases are also poor, mine had a lot of sharp plastic left around the holes which I didn't notice on the inside of the token slot, so a few tokens were damaged while inserting them. The tiles are much better, lovely detail and give the look of a mansion that has a few secrets to tell.

I will play it tonight using just the monster tokens, if I like the game and keep it I can cut the pegs off and use GW bases with them, but it shouldn't be this way. I would have preferred card stands and £40 off the RRP.

I had *exactly* the same first impressions... worthwhile bearing in mind that the app isn't really free.  Think of the app being part of what you're paying for, you'll get a very different impression by the end of your first game.

Top tip: makes a big difference to setup if you put the items, unique items, spells and conditions in alphabetical order

Played this for the first time today. First and second scenarios. My mate (his game) had only played the first scenario twice before and said all three times were very different. The two of us won the first scenario, and got well beat in the second. We had the iPad bluetoothing to his stereo. We took turns narrating and really roleplayed it up.

Bottom line: It was fucking brilliant. Tense. Creepy. Funny. Exciting. Really thrilling to win. Playing was such an immersive experience I didn't even mind losing the second scenario. Can't talk to longevity, but those 4 hours were by far the best boardgaming of my admittedly limited experience.

Though it did make me jones even harder for a similar Imperial Assault app with all the SW music and SFX. Imagine that...

In the meantime, buy this!

The Imperial Assault app is coming....

Sauce?

Last I heard, FFG don't have an LFL licence for creating any digital games. Having said that they did a Star Wars dice companion app, so presumably it's open to interpretation.

However if they made an SW app as good as the MoM one, I will buy the fuck out of IA and all its expansions.

Edit: And it's true! They announced they were working on it on Twitter during Gencon. Awesome!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

A friend and I played through the second scenario last week... wow.  What a step up from the first one in difficulty and scope.  Also, genuine puzzles to solve and things to do.  Without spoiling it for people, we thought we had the case done and dusted and headed off to a part of the map to make our escape.  We both ended up going insane and cornered by terrible unspeakable horror... can't wait to play it again.

Absolutely the best 'board gaming' experience I think I've ever had in the 25 years I've been doing it.
