Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition

here's the thing..

a good board game is timeless.  I've had Space Marine, Dungeonquest, Civilization etc for years now and while the cards and components aren't as flash - they're still great games.

What's MoM going to be like in 20 years time?  Will the app still exist?  How will we play it... In some ways, I'm kinda hoping they bring out a 'Keeper's pack' that allows people to play the game with cards and stuff just like you would without the app.

The first version is a different experience im lead to believe? A different game really - 1vsall rather than a co-op. I think retaining the feel and style of version two is more what they are looking for.

Enjoy reading the experiences here, still on the fence!

Received Beyond The Threshold today, looking forward to the interesting sounding murder mystery, but still had to sigh at the times given on the box. Thinking of getting rid of it after I've done these two scenarios, I have more time then most to play boardgames, but I've only played two of the base scenarios, and even the second of those was a little long. I'm going to organise a big game of one of those ridiculously long ones, but a mate who I regularly played this with has bought this now, and he already owned the first edition, making my copy a little redundant. I'll see how I feel closer to the Expo, but whilst I'm happy sinking my money into Time Stories for one-off plays, my lack of interest in minis hasn't made me feel like I've really got my money's worth yet.

Played the DLC scenario yesterday with 3 mates... about 3.5 hours, but we've a terrible habit of fannying about and talking about other shite when gaming. Great scenario though.. I won't spoil it, but it's a bit of a change of pace from some of the more combat heavy ones. Lots of puzzles to solve, which we really enjoyed.  Well worth the 4 quid. Also, if you have the expansions, it will use monsters from those too.

I did the DLC scenario, only took a couple of hours, but the app glitched right as we were about to win, and wouldn't let us click on the final action we needed to do to win.

argh - nightmare!  We had one glitch but it was just a message that didn't display when activating a statue... so we knew what it said anyway and took us to the puzzle.

We fanny about a lot, overthink strategies and talk about shite at the same time... we're notoriously slow gamers. :)

I've just gone and bought Beyond The Threshold.  Tempted to solo play that tonight... but also tempted to play AH LCG (which is *brilliant*).

I play board games more than I play videogames now.

Played the murder mystery yesterday, minor spoilers below

We absolutely cocked up the investigation and didn't really know what to ask. In the second half I went insane, then one of our number made a unilateral decision to accuse someone. Incorrectly. After that we all went insane, but actually managed to kill the vengeful ghost. And we all achieved our insanity conditions! We did remark that not only did we prevent Carvey's murder, we also murdered his ghost. Worst detectives ever.

The local game group as some very "skilled" and knowledgable players (help operate a game shop etc)

They're not convinced you can "win" Innsworth without doing a near perfect run - something impossible the first few times to build up enough knowledge.

MoM seems very "tight" on time in most of it's scenarios - so unless you're being very very efficient (hard to do without fore knowledge) you'll suffer.

Played Riding Tide last night. What a great scenario! Total change of pace from the others we've tried. Felt like we were really struggling throughout the investigation part to obtain enough info but got one of the cultists right and managed to fight off all the monsters at the end to give us time to stop the ritual.

Brilliant. Took us about three and a half hours in the end but didn't feel like it.

As I posted in the “what are you playing” thread, I (re)bought this a couple of days ago and as anyone who owns the game will know, it has a lot of pieces. Like…a LOT.

Not content to try and ram them in the few plastic bags provided or let them tumble free in the box, I bought a little storage box on Amazon which, in my haste, I forgot to actually measure but I needn’t have worried because it’s an absolutely perfect fit!

It can be found here and costs £7.99: Snowkingdom Transparent Plastic Grid Box Storage Organizer for Display Collection with Adjustable Dividers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0768H1QSJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_DM6EGZSKNDJRA4MYQ5C9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I’ve organised the box into compartments so that each card or token has its own slot - there was even enough room for the player minis!

The map tiles and character cards sit on top, as do the monster minis and their bases, and it all closes flush as if it was made just for this purpose.

Anyway I’m dead pleased with it, so if anyone else has the game and is stuck for some way to store it all safely, I can vouch for this!
