Hi just seen this can I throw my hat in the ring please? I played AD&D 2nd edition some 25 years ago (DM and player) but not since. I am just getting back into D&D and got the Players handbook recently. I am also doing so me local meets for a real intro etc (this saturday being one of them) but would love an online option as time is obviously precious so not sure real meet group will fit me longterm.

I can make the Sunday 8pm session but I will need to source a mic/headset as I dont have one. I can/have rolled a character a cleric human charotic good which I could use or I could get one from the starter set?

If there is room I'd love to give it a go!

As for preferred evening I'd like to say which ones I cant do :) which are Mon thurs (and prefer not Fri Sat)...

I played around with creating my own rogue, which ended up quite similar stat wise to the pre built one so I think for the first game, I'm going to go ahead and use the pre built one.  My choices were a different background, which would give me slightly different proficiencies and potentially dual wielding or at the very least the rapier as a starting weapon, and also I would choose a different starting pack. So, I'm not overly fussed about testing the waters with the pre built one. :)

So question 1, because I'm not sure that I fully understand a couple of things.  I roll a d20 to see if I hit an enemy, my roll hits so I then roll my damage dice, so for Shortsword it's something like 1d6 + 3 pierce.  So I roll a 3, and I add 3 to give me a total of 6 damage. But, on the character sheet there is something like a +5 in between my weapon name, and my die roll damage.  (Says attack bonus) What is that +5? Is it something I add to the total damage?  I know that it is my dexterity bonus + my proficiency bonus added together, but I'm not quite sure what I do with this number if anything or if it is just for info.  I may have missed the explanation.

And more specifically to Sharky: The starter rule book doesn't really go in to depth in terms of carrying weight etc, I mean it gives you the weight of weapons and stuff, and I think it simply states that you can carry around 15 x your strength in lbs, is this something you would want us to keep track of during the first game?  I think if you are over burdened then your speed is halved and I can't quite remember correctly if you have disadvantage on stealth checks.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Ok to attack (from PHB)

Roll a D20 and add the ability modifier (strength for melee and dexterity for ranged) and then proficiency so if you are proficient in Martial/Melee weapons or specifically the short sword (which rogue has) that is a plus 2 as well. So if you roll a 10 and have strength 18 you get 10 + 4(strength) +2 = 16

if you hit then you get damage which for shortsword is 1d6 plus your ability modifier (strength) which in my example was +4 so 1d6+4. So your +3 might be due to strength, piercing itself is just the type of damage.. useful to know if the foe is either resistant to or vulnerable to that damage it might modify it.

The +5 you mention may well be your combined modifier to hit so +3 for strength (if your strength is 16 or 17) and +2 for being proficient. The +3 you mention as damage modifier would tally with having strength of 16-17 as I mention.

As for weight all I have read is that you'd struggle to hit the weight limit 15 times strength is ALOT unless you have rubbish strength stat.

EDIT - my rolled Cleric is fairly run of the mill with rolls but I got v lucky with an 18 which I bunged in wisdom.

Apologies and correction, rookie mistake by there . Because you are rogue and it is a Finesse weapon then it is a Dexterity modifier so

To attack D20  + 3 (dex mod for 16-17 dex) and +2 (proficiency)

Damage 1d6 + 3 (dex mod for 16-17 dex).

EDIT - the rolls and mechanics feel/sound clunky to begin with but after a while they fall to background and RP comes to the fore.

Ahh, so it's just basically a summary of my + to hit roll. So if I got a new weapon, that say didn't use my Dex modifier but instead used Str (which isn't going to happen, but for the sake of talking) then I would take my -1 and I'm probably not going to be proficient in anything that uses Str really so I wouldn't have a proficiency modifier to add to it, I'd take that -1 and put it the "Attack bonus" box so at a glance I can see what I + / - from my hit roll.

It does make sense, it's just I can see all this information on my character sheet, and for the most part work out what it all means and where my modifiers have influence, etc, but that one I just couldn't figure out when to actually use it!

Thanks, Clipper :)

I havent played online before, do I need a microphone, I don't have one, but have time to get one if necessary.

Hello, you're both welcome to join. Having people with some experience, even if it's from older editions, will be really useful. None of the rest of us have ever played before!

You will need a microphone, yes, as everything will be done via voice chat. I suppose you could use text in discord if you're unable to get a microphone in time, but in an ideal world we'll all be on mic. As we go on I'd like to introduce video, too, but we'll see what happens.

I think for our first game that should be enough players now.

I recommend you set up discord prior to 8pm Sunday as I'd like to get going promptly. Just a heads up: Please have a character back story prepared as it's one of the first things I'll be asking you to explain to the group.

Speak to you all then, adventurers!

I thought Feats only applied beyond a certain level. At level 1 you wouldn't necessarily have one according to the rules. When you reach a level where you get an increased ability point you get the option of getting a feat instead (usually  using RP).

As for coordinating characters can I put my name down as a Chaotic Good Cleric I have rolled one not sure how it will fit with the party though. I know Rikku has a Rogue what is everyone else?

Also I rolled legit using the 4d6 discard lowest I didn't use point buy, is that ok or shall I rejig. My dice rolls were legit.. most middling but I lucked out with an 18 giving me a 19 wisdom.

I could pick one from starter set if everyone prefers which is on it's way and I ordered a headset from amazon as well and will sort out discord.

In actuality rogues are proficient in simple weapons so if the weapon did not use Finesse you would indeed have to use your -1 strength mod but you would still be proficient and get a +2 leaving you with an attack modifier of +1. However your dam,age modifier would be -1

Please use this thread to work out your characters etc to make sure we don't end up rolling with six clerics or five rogues and a chicken farmer or something! Whilst you don't have to out your character back story in the thread, please put your character name, class and base stats as it will help me to prepare ahead of time.

Thanks!

Okay. I shall order a mic (any recommendations)?

I was thinking of playing a Magic-User but see that is taken.

Role-call:

@Rikku - Halfling Thief

@Nicky -?

@Andy_Why - Human Wizard

@MDY - Halfling Monk

@Clipper - ?

The Hierophant - ?

[ @Doctor Shark - DM;Dwarven Fighter/Paladin]

We could probably do with a cleric, a fighter type plus one other (possibly another fighter type).

I'm happy with either a cleric or a fighter (was thinking maybe Half-Orc Barbarian :lol: ) but happy to defer to Nicky and Clipper.

If you want to do a half orc barbarian then go for it. That will be really interesting to play, I'm sure.

So we have:

@Rikku - Halfling Thief

@Nicky -?

@Andy_Why - Human Wizard

@MDY - Halfling Monk

@Clipper - Cleric

The Hierophant - Fighter type (probably Half-Orc; probably Barbarian)

[ @Doctor Shark - DM;Dwarven Fighter/Paladin]

I'll work up a character and post it here.

Thanks, any links?

Sorry

http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets

the left hand link for character sheets is a zip containing lots of different ones.. but the ones in the PHB at the back appear in this document

DnD_5E_CharacterSheet - Form Fillable.pdf

I have filled that in for my character as a form filled pdf and it works great.

EDIT - all the alternatives contain same info some of it grouped differently. for instance one lists all the skills in one box and another has them in sub boxes of each ability. But I used standard ones as I say

i can be there from 9ish maybe a tad earlier... I have discord but no mic yet

Or so i thought, i plugged in my old rockband microphone on the off chance and turns out it works as a logitech USB mic god knows how it will sound.

Who or what do I add on discord? My user is Clipper on there.

So the party will look like this:

Rikku - Halfling Thief

Nicky - Fighter

Andy_Why - Human Wizard

MDY - Halfling Monk

Clipper - Cleric

The Hierophant - Half-Orc Barbarian

(Not sure what races Nicky and Clipper are going for.)

That looks surprisingly balanced!

I will try and do my character tonight (need to find my dice, which I think are in the loft)!
