So the campaign we're running from the starter set, Lost Mine of Phandelver, is played out over four parts. For simplicity's sake I'm going to suggest we do that over four nights (so a month in total). It will give each session a definitive end, avoid having to finish in the middle of something exciting and keep suspense going. Obviously I don't know how long each session will be yet, so this may not actually work out so cleanly, but we shall see.

On another note, if you have bought the starter set, please try and refrain from reading the adventure prior to Sunday unless you want the entire thing spoilt. Whilst encounters etc can play out any way, reading the adventure will basically spoil everything for you as it is meant for the DM, not players, and explains every story beat, what's coming up, what enemies are where and so on. If you have already or intend to read the adventure before we play, your in game character won't have any prior knowledge of anything and will learn along the way because that will be more fun.

Finished creating my character, Cora Greenbottle the Lightfoot Halfling Charlatan Rogue.

I rolled and placed my points as follows:

Dexterity: 6,6,6,2 = 18 + 2 for a total of 20

Charisma: 6,4,6,1 = 16 +1 for a total of 17

Wisdom: 5,6,5,3 = 16

Intelligence: 5,3,2,4 = 12

Constitution: 4,2,4,4 = 12

Strength: 5,5,2,2 = 12

Don't think the server is alive for me to upload my character sheet though, will do that later :)

FUCK :(

I'm SO sorry guys - have something family related I need to go deal with immediately and there's basically no chance I'll be back in time.. so I'm gonna have to bow out (for this first game/session at least..)
Really pissed off about it.. been looking forward to it all week.. (The other game I was gonna play fell through as well - so I'm 0 for 2!)

Sorry to here it MDY. We'll meet your character at an inn somewhere next week :).

For those of you who were creating your own characters, I assume you had access to the Players handbook? I think I'll just run a pre-made Wizard. He's a high-elf, but that works too!

I'm AndyWhy on discord, if you guys could add me.

I'm looking forward to this! :)

It says it needs your 4 digit code to add you! :)

I'm Tutsie#8411

And yes, I got the Players Handbook delivered last week, really looking forward to tonight.  Trying to currently figure out how to get the little one to bed and keep him there!  I'm beginning to wish I had gone with ranger though! Maybe if we start another adventure or whatever I'll get to play one!  I'm rather nervous about being our only rogue and not not being able to stealth or something if you need me to scout.

Spoiler

Our band of intrepid adventurers found themselves on the road heading south-east of Neverwinter to the rough and tumble settlement of Phandalin. A mutual aquaintance, Gundren Rockseeker, had hired them to escort a cart of provisions to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post within Phandalin, in exchange for 10 gold pieces each. Gundren had then rode on ahead with a human warrior named Sildar Hallwinter.

Having been on the road for a few days, the driver of the cart - a simple, easy going but nervous man, asked his companions who they were and how they'd come to be his escorts on the road. A human cleric, who introduced himself as Spetzer, explained that he had been hired to provide protection, although he'd much rather be elsewhere. A large, stoic half-orc merely grunted whilst the large Dragonborn Barbarian, high-elf wizard and halfling thief remained quiet.

Eventually Cora, who was scouting ahead, noticed two dead horses blocking the track. Upon closer investigation, she discovered they'd been killed by arrows about a day before and that they were the horses that Gundren and Sildar had ridden ahead on. The packs had been looted. As Spetzer and Drognosh came to investigate, Drognosh dragging the poor cart driver along with him by the scruff of his neck, four goblins attacked from the thickets on the side of the road, two on each side.

Two of the goblins charged at Spetzer, but failed to notice the halfling thief Cora, who swiftly stepped out from behind Spetzer and stabbed the goblin through the throat, killing it instantly. Spetzer smashed the other in the chest with his mace, badly wounding but not killing it. Doralow, the high elf wizard, fired a ray of frost at one of the ranged goblins but missed, the spell dissipating before it hit its target. Dragnosh, the dragonborn barbarian, took the opportunity to charge at one of the goblins, cleaving it in two straight down the middle with one swing of his mighty greataxe. Foehammer tried the same but was attacked as he arrived, suffering from superficial damage.

Cora finished off the goblin by Spetzer, opening him up with a quick flourish of her rapier. Doralow fired another ray of frost, missing again. Foehammer decapitated the final goblin, ending the battle. Whilst some of the group stumbled about trying to search for clues, Drognosh decided to force the cart driver to his knees and made him watch whilst the dragonborn barbarian slowly and precisely mutilated one of the goblin corpses, taking care to place a pile of entrails and bloody rags in the driver's lap, whilst interrogating as to his knowledge of the attack. The driver, who wet himself in fear, assured the group he had nothing to do with it. It was clear the driver was telling the truth and, as Drognosh relaxed his grip, the driver took the opportunity to run off as fast as he could back towards town.

Eventually Cora spotted a hidden trail leading north-west. Further investigation showed that two roughly human-sized prisoners had been dragged, either dead or unconscious, along the path by a dozen goblins. The group decided to hide the cart and provisions in a bush before heading up the trail, realising that it was most definitely Gundren, their employer, and Sildar, his warrior companion.

Scouting ahead, Cora was able to spot and avoid both a snare and pitfall trap, helping the rest of the party do the same. After about five miles the group found themselves on the left bank of a stream emerging from a cavemouth. On the opposite side of the stream was a dense patch of briar thickets. Spetzer took the opportunity to sit down and uncork some wine, passing it around to the group. Doralow began investigating the cave mouth whilst Drognosh splashed about in the water, cleaning blood and gore from his feet. As he did so he alerted two goblins who were on guard in the thicket, causing them to open fire. Drognosh took an arrow to the shoulder. Cora, who had been sat next to Spetzer, stood and fired her shortbow at the goblins, missing wildly. Darolow decided to switch from ice to fire, shooting and instantly cremating one of the two goblins. Foehammer and Drognosh charged the remaining goblin but, due to the difficult terrain, missed their attacks. The goblin, seeing his mate explode and two barbarians charge at him, ran into the clearing behind him. Cora took the opportunity to head to the mouth of the clearing and sunk an arrow right through the goblin's skull, killing it.

Searching the makeshift goblin camp revealed little save for a few tatters, rusty weapons and jars of goblin piss. Spetzer, fancying himself a joker, tricked Drognosh into drinking the piss. Drognosh, failing to spot the ruse, downed it in one before describing it as 'tangy' and 'brackish'.

...to be continued.

A write up of tonight's session...

Thanks everyone for joining and apologies for the rough and ready pace as we figured things out - we'll get better!

See you all next Sunday...!

If the barbarians could just refrain from splicing the goblins in two (and rogue throat stabbing them viciously despite being 3ft high) we might just have a chance of getting some information

:D

Totally didn't even consider this as a possibility until it was mentioned. Unsure how we could do it!

you can try anything and that is the beauty of D&D , it may not work but you can try anything at all.

When I did my IRL one shot on Saturday I "disarmed" a spear trap by activating it with a bag of sand on pressure plate and smashed the spears. Apparently there was a more subtle way :D

EDIT - I believe if you want to subdue an enemy you can tell the DM that you aren't intending your MELEE attack to be lethal (ranged I dont believe work) it is upto to DM if he wants that to be said before or after you know it is blow to reduce HP to zero. In that instance if the enemy is knocked down to 0 or less hit points then it is rendered unconscious.

Thanks again to everyone who joined last night. I hope you enjoyed it? Being DM was fun but stressful! I essentially had the adventure book, starter rule set, players handbook and dungeon master guide all open at once and was frantically flicking between them to try and work stuff out, so apologies if I got any of it wrong or seemed too slow. I particularly need to re-read the sections on magic (or Divinity, in Spetzer's case - I can hear him sighing from here) and how that all works. There is so much to keep track of!

@Rikku, as clipper says, I think the beauty of this game is you can try pretty much anything you can think of and I'm sure once we all settle in it'll start coming more naturally and you'll start coming up with some Scanlan style plans!

I am going to see up roll20 for next week's game - I've found a copy of the game map and can even hide bits using fog of war, so I think that will really help you guys.

Any other ideas or suggestions greatly received!
