Bulletstorm Remaster

Played some multiplayer and once again it's populated with muppets who don't go for team skillshots or the challenges, don't know how to handle the mini-bosses (did you play the campaign?), or just don't get the challenges at all. To be fair, some are tricky (like doing a specific environmental kill on a fast moving enemy involves sliding into them or shooting their legs, then leashing or kicking them in the right direction) but even so, there's a fucking page that describes all of them. :quote:

That all said, unlike other wave type games (eg: Horde mode on Gears), you aren't punished for failing a round at all. You keep all your upgrades and even keep any skill points that you won during the round which is nice. The only problem is that only the host gets to decide if you replay a round (rather than a vote), so if the host throws in the towel then everyone gets booted out. :(

On a different note, I finally managed to get all the single-player skill shots. I had incredibly difficulty with Lucky Shot first time around (kill someone with a cannonball that travels 100 metres or more without bouncing) for which Spainkiller ridiculed me, and justifiably so it turns out. I read a guide on a good place to go for it and had it five minutes later. Dammit.

I also note that the Anarchy rank achievement has been reduced from 65 to 30. To avoid overt grinding, or because no one will be playing in a month's time?

There are some slightly odd choices in the remaster based on that video - the turquoise water doesn't look as nice, the toned-down sun glare isn't as striking, and the hazy skies in the desert bit don't look as good as the original blue skies. It's not exactly Halo: Anniversary in terms of divergence from the original art style, though.

I've only played a little bit of the remaster, but in the options screen there's an option to turn on 'cinematic visuals' which apparently enables more realistic post-processing effects, but to my eyes just makes the game look a bit more drab and washed-out. I wonder if the comparison videos above were recorded with that option enabled - it would explain why things like the sun glare look a lot less vivid.

It's not exactly a deal-breaker, but in addition to crudely inserting Duke Nukem into the game (*hilarious Duke quip about crudely inserting something into a babe*) Gearbox appear to have committed at least one act of vandalism on the remaster - in one bit where you go through a glass-walled underwater tunnel, I saw something moving out in the water, which turned out to be one of those flying squid things from Duke Nukem 3D. It's the original sprite from the game, so it looks absolutely shite. Good work, Gearbox. It's an easter egg for the fans, but an easter egg full of rabbit droppings rather than Maltesers, and the fans are date rapists.

That aside, I'm really enjoying replaying this. It looks great, and the way it manages to simultaneously be a well-executed action game and a subversion of action games is really impressive. I made the mistake of playing the game on hard, which isn't really much harder, it's just less fun because you earn fewer skill points.

I agree - I bought this yesterday and £11.99 is the right price for it.  It's a great game, but it feels barely any sort of remaster because the 360 version was in HD anyway, and this is a game I picked up for Xbox 360 at £2.99 in a Game sale.

Asking £50 for this takes the piss, despite the game being so much fun.  But £11.99, snap it up.

(Isn't it a bit weird that a game that runs from disk on a 360 needs to copy 13Gb to your console, then download another 10?  I thought, "I'll have a quick try on Bulletstorm before I go out" like some sort of idiot.

Well, Its not enough to stop me buying their games, what isn't inspired or copied these days.  I thought the way people were going on that they were grinding up children and using them to feed their employees.  jeez.

True enough. Codehunters story may be awfully similar but the style was also extremely derivative of French comics such as Metal Hurlant.

I'd completely forgotten about the remaster - damn I enjoyed it when the game first came out. Is the co-op better optimised? It seemed like it used to drop players regularly back then.

It's still a great looking game, really nice sun-drenched atmospheres that weren't in too many shooters, made for a nice alternative.

It's pure wanton mayhem, I had forgotten how much fun the leash/kick combo was!
