It's so good and there are so many different levels to it. The most important takeaway though is

If you meet someone and pretty much everyone they are related and associated with is a racist, they are probably a racist too

It's definitely not just a horror movie, it's more social commentary than anything

I think I made the mistake of watching the trailer and feel like I know what it is now which stops me wanting to watch it. Please tell me if I'm wrong but I get Eden Lake vibes from it but about racism. So it will 2 hours of bad white people shouting  'Black people are horrible!', followed by scenes of them hurting/torturing a black person. Then the black protagonist escapes.

Is it more than that?

Also, how gory is it? Lots of 'torture porn'?

Not in the slightest, and there isn't actually any gore at all.

Great film. Smart script, stunningly understated performance from Kaluuya (until he needed to blow, then it went up a gear). Wonderful 70's conspiracy atmosphere. Like The Howling and Stepford Wives. Little sprinkling of social commentary and you have yourself probably the best horror movie in a few years

It's almost exactly the opposite to what you think. Definitely check it out.

Yeah it's more of a thriller, and for me it passed the six laugh test but that only applied to me and a few others in the screening. Really enjoyed it and well worth seeing, as others have said it's not what you expect.

Hah, @Capwn it's nothing like you describe. It's a lot more subversive than that.

I watched it this morning. I had heard really good word of mouth from early screenings of this, so have managed to avoid all reviews and chat. And as per usual I did not watch the trailer as I knew I was going to watch it regardless. So glad I did as it's a film that pays off going in fresh.

What an incredibly assured debut feature. Tense is not the word. I squirmed so hard into my sofa I felt like I was in a sunken place. The first hour is so tense and creepy with this sense of pervasive dread that I found it incredibly difficult to watch. Far more so than any out-and-out "horror" I've seen in recent years. I was expecting full on Wicker Man at one point.

I did predict what was going to happen fairly early on, but also a bunch of incorrect conclusions. I don't think it can be helped though. With the atmosphere it builds you are constantly second guessing the plot, wondering where it can all be leading.

It's probably set race relations back a hundred years though.

Yeah I feel daft with my initial post after learning more about it, I was just going by the trailer. I've still not seen this, it's my no1 film that I want to see but it wasn't showing at my cinema. So I'm waiting for it to come out to rent digitally.

I imagine the trailer was cut deliberately to make people think that.

What was the deal with the weird bingo game?

There's a couple of deeper mythos moments that i didn't quite get. Going to rewatch it at some point. I watched the scene when he firsts meets the parents again, and there's some pretty major hints.

Yeah it was clear the game of "bingo" was a cover for the bidding.

Everything kinda made sense by the end of the film. The only thing i wondered about was the girl, whether she was under any influence but i'm pretty sure that was just who she was. Also, i can totally see a prequel working for this. It would be good to see how they figured all this stuff out.

The film did remind me of Skeleton Key... a little.

My favorite film of the year so far. As others mentioned there is a wickerman vibe as well as nods to some other cult classics. Also I was pleased that this film had no excess padding and a nice lean runtime. Too many films now seem to clock in over two hours and it's more than often to their detriment.
