Yeah you're right, he was great in Black Mirror, though I thought that was a lesser episode so I guess thats why I overlooked him. Watching him in Sicario sort of reinforced me writing him off. Then watching this (6 times now) I realised I made a massive mistake. He is SO fucking good.

Saw this last night having only seen the trailer. Really enjoyed it, and like everybody else, when the police car pulled up at the end I feared the worst...but I think that was the point

 

The 'reveal' is quite similar to another film I've seen - The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson... only seen it once when I was a teen, but I remember enjoying it.

This shit is deeper than the abyss with her, from the fact that she was named Rose (beautiful, but unless you look you don't see the thorns) to the fact that like everyone else at the slave auction, she was wearing black and red because she was in with it as well, all the way down to the fact that the bitch was eating her cereal separate from the milk whilst looking for her next victim. There is nothing in this movie that is superfluous all the way from Andre falling down and landing in the same position as Trayvon Martin at the beginning, through to Grandpa taking over the bodies of black men because he got beaten by Jesse Owens at the olympics, down to Chris saving himself by stuffing his ears with the one thing that slaves spent most of their lives picking, cotton.

 

Sorry to drag up a months old post, Wickedkitten, but would you mind explaining the significance of Rose eating her cereal separately from the milk? I don't understand why you pointed it out as meaningful, as it seems innocuous to me.

 

Actually, thinking about it for a moment, was it more that she was doing something so humdrum while searching for her next victim, thereby making the act of searching also humdrum and banal in her mind?

It might not be the case, but the way I see it is when people actually kept themselves out of the sun and that shit to maintain their "porcelain" or "milk white" complexions and she was actually eating her cereal separately from the milk because she didn't want to taint even that with the colour from the froot loops.

I finally got round to watching this last night. I'm so glad I went in knowing next to nothing about it than it was supposed to be good. It properly got under my skin and gave me some odd dreams, like all the best horror. I had a lot more to think about after reading what @Wickedkitten posted as well, some great observations there!

I didn't realise how well this did at box office. It seems it beat everything from Kong and Pirates of the Caribean to Transformers. Vox link.

Domestically (ie in the US) yes. Not worldwide, not by a long way. But in terms of pure profit then yep, it twatted 'em. 

 

For comparison, in worldwide box office terms, Transformers made 3x its budget back. Get Out made 28x its budget back

It's both an inspiration and a frustration for film makers like me. Get Out had the same budget as the last film I made but my film will top out at $1m at the box office. Now, Get Out is utterly fucking fantastic and i'm stoked it's done so well. However, there are equally fucking fantastic films of similar budgets that simply have no hope of achieving that level of success because Universal spent $15m promoting the film as part of their output deal with Blumhouse. Nobody ever spends 10x the budget promoting a film like that. 

The success of The Purge, The Conjuring, Get Out, Drag me to Hell etc just goes to show how popular genre films are if people just know they're out there. There needs to be more output deals like the one Blumhouse has with Universal.

Isn't that part of the economics of horror films? I've always thought that horror and comedy were the two genres of film where the budget really doesn't have much to do with the success of the film. Action movies, thrillers, melodramas and animations really don't have much of a chance of huge box office success without huge production budgets. But those two genres seem to have little correlation with their production costs. It's more about word of mouth, advertising and luck. Studios fund loads of low to medium budget movies and hope some of them start the hype train rolling early and then spend big money on advertising. Or is the advertising budget agreed in advance?

Well with the Blumhouse deal, they make about 15 films a year. Out of those, Universal and Blumhouse will agree between them which three are going to be the ones to get the big marketing push. Get Out could have very easily gone the straight to video route if it wasn't for Jason Blum fighting tooth & nail to make it one of the three.

Split and The Purge: Election Year were the two others in the last year to get the marketing spend. 

 

Out of the 12 that don't make the cut, 9 go out through their Netflix deal. Films like 'Hush'.

 

Three get binned and we never see them. Such as Joe Carnahan's 'Stretch'.

I thought it was good but predictable and frustrating..

 

After the first 30 minutes it was obvious

his girlfriend was in on it by the fact she didn't notice any of the freak deaky behaviour or appear in any of the scenes with it

 

And the whole thing where his friend 

goes to the cops is just nonsense, seriously the missing guy can be Googleed yet the cops can't do the same and see he isn't lying? 

 

Oh and when he' s  

in the chair with the straps, he chews on them then gives up but doesn't think to try and undo or pull them with his teeth?

Just saw this. Really enjoyed it, though the alternative ending on the DVD was a lot better than what was used.

 

Also all the way through the third act I was waiting for a bigger twist that never came. Much more of a predictable horror ending in some ways:

I was convinced the whole murderous escape sequence was a fabrication under hypnosis. To allow his mind to fully relax after he ‘escaped’. They even hint at this in one of the videos when he’s strapped down, saying that this stage is preparing the mind or some such. It also makes more sense of the convenience of his mate arriving to drive him away.

 

By the way, there are some very funny alternative takes of the final scene they used on the DVD, worth a watch.

Cops arrive, real cops, and he’s arrested. Cut to 6 months later, and his mate comes to visit him in chokey, where he’s doing life for killing the rich white family. He tells his mate to forget about trying to help clear his name. He accepts there’s no chance for a black man in this situation. And walks back into the system.

Yup. Which is kinda why I was happy they didn't go with this ending because it was too obvious and cliched.
