Better the silly fantasy ending then?

Yeah because

Spoiler

as soon as the cop car rolled up I was like "here we go, that cop from earlier is gonna get out and shoot/arrest him and shes gonna get away with it".

The fact it did do that was a very pleasant surprise

This is a really inconsequential thing but in the trailers I'm sure there was some sort of deer skeleton monster thing but I never saw it in the film. Did I drift off and miss it?

There was but that scene was cut from the film. It looked like it was from the hypnosis scene and had more than a hint of Evil Dead 2.

Noticed this mentioned more than a few times in the Best of 2017 thread so decided to check it out last night with my girfriend. What a brilliant film - it really paid to not read anything about it going in. It had its problems - as with almost all films of this type, you tend to get to a breaking point in the tension where things go from quietly unsettling to more traditional horror and it never quite hits the same highs afer that. But it's a minor quibble because the film does so much good work and set-up that I was able to buy into every character decision right up until the end.

The only bit I really didn't like was:

Spoiler

When he was being told what was going to happen and the film flashes to earlier scenes of conversations he's had with the members of the family and party guests. It's one of my least favourite techniques in movies, so I was disappointed to see it used here as the film is better than that. Felt like studio interference.

But anyway, I loved it. The 'sunken' scenes captured the feel of being in a nightmare as well as anything I can recall. My girlfriend absolutely hated it, which is to say she loved it, too.

I just watched this too, great film, though kind of got a little too ridiculous by the end.

I mean, just scooping out someones brain and putting it into someone elses head is a bit too Hammer horror (not necessarily a bad thing but jarred a little with the social realism).

Also, a bit of a flaw that a camera flash shakes them out of it, no? Would you really have your loved one reincarnated and living with you in the knowledge that if they should see a camera flash they would go apeshit and probably murder you?

Minor nitpicks, though. Loved reading about all the little subtexts (I must admit I missed most of them!)

Minor nitpick response

he only gets to the point of taking the scalp off so you don't know what his technique was going to be and also, I think doing this kind of operation might be a little flawed so the camera flash niggle is a bit harsh.[/spoiler]

I didn't like his friend at all until I read the reason for him being there

I enjoyed it - it reminded me of Twilight Zone, Shylaman, 70s sci-fi horror and it was really cleverly put together, well edited and it was exactly the right running time too. My favourite modern/recent horror film prior to this was Devil and that's really short too. A film doesn't have to be 2hrs long.

that he's the fast talking/wise-cracking black comedy character trope so it's a comment on cinema itself - quite clever actually

What is the problem with Rod? What makes him a trope?

He is often comic relief and in some ways resembles the fast-talking black sidekick character, but he is demonstrated to be a skilled professional, albeit susceptible to flights of fancy and exaggeration.

Wickedkitten’s posts showed me so much more in this film than I’d seen when I watched it.

One question about the opening

Spoiler

I thought the guys they got were through Rose’s dating of them. Like Chris, this would have made them easier to hypnotise. But this guy was just grabbed off the street.

And did I miss something but what was the deal with the

Helmet?

There's one throwaway line about the fact that both kids go and get specimens. The son having much less savoury methods than the daughter.

I think the helmet was just having a little dig about white crusaders

I just saw this, and didn’t know anything about it beforehand. Cracking film!

Reading the thread, I’m surprised they’d even considered an alternative ending. I thought they’d set it up to end in the way we all expected it to, and just added a final neat switcheroo in to the mix.

How did we all expect it to end?

I expected a

‘Brazil’ ending

But got a

happy ending. Which disappointed me, as it felt at odds with the rest of the film.

I would even have preferred the original

Spoiler

Honest ending.

But we didn’t get that, according to the Director, because Trump.

Watched last night and loved it

Spoiler

Loved how he was actually picking cotton out of the chair, their jumpers made the US flag and a few subtle bits. Her objecting to the cop wanting to see his ID was just her trying not to have him leave a paper trail. Only thing I thought was a bit stupid was the operating scenes.

Will watch again and his new one.

It is a really great film. It’s everything the new one is not - takes one idea and wrings every last ounce from it. I didn’t like much of the OTT humour first time but it is better when you are ready for it.

Just saw this tonight. Enjoyable movie but not as good as I was expecting given some of the hype on here. I'd say it is a little too on the nose  with the race relations stuff. I do like how we don't have a stupid horror protagonist. Everything he does makes sense...except for maybe

Killing the father with the head of a stag...

although I suspect there is some poignancy to that I've missed.

Dont really get the stereotypical mate. I mean he provides amusing light relief but, like someone else said, he really is like he's in a different movie.

Watched this tonight and found it fascinating.

To bring up your last point (sorry to reply nearly two years after the fact),

Spoiler

isn't that the whole point? Black people are usually seen as the comic relief, the collateral, etc? So him acting a little bit wacky is how most black men are used within a film scenario. In fact the whole scene in the police station felt on point to me, with the sassy black women, the overal co,ic feel of those particular scenes. How the chirpy black friend comes to the rescue at the end. See also LL Cool J on Deep Blue Sea.
